The bottom section of the draw should yield an all-Spanish quarter-final. Rafael Nadal is heavily favored in his match over countryman Juan Carlos Ferrero, and David Ferrer is the favorite in this round of sixteen encounter with Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia.
Tipsarevic, currently ranked 37 in the world, enjoys playing on clay but he seems to produce his best results on the slower hard courts. He recently reached the quarterfinals in Miami, where he lost to eventual champion Nikolay Davydenko. He struggled against the veteran from Ecuador, Nicolas Lapentti in his second round match on Wednesday, and also won a three setter in the opening round against Paul-Henri Mathieu.
Ferrer is in far better form than Lapentti. He had early round loses in Indian Wells and Miami, but he won Valencia last week, and looks to be in fine form on the clay. He easily dispatched of Marat Safin in the second round and will look to do the same in this match.
Ferrer and Tipsarevic have met just once in their careers. The match took place at Indian Wells in 2007. Ferrer won easily with a 6-1, 6-3 scoreline. Ferrer in straight sets.
