Gulbis, Verdasco battle in third round Latvia's Ernests Gulbis is back on court to face Spain's Fernando Verdasco in third-round action at the All-England Club. The players are joined by 20th seed Mikhail Youzhny, who takes on Serbia's Viktor Troicki.

    Ernests Gulbis vs. Fernando Verdasco

World No. 39 Ernests Gulbis looks to level a 1-2 series deficit against World No. 54 Fernando Verdasco on Friday. The two are set to meet for the first time on grass.

Gulbis is through to the round of 32 after sixth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga retired with a knee injury. The 24-year-old had rallied to build a two-sets-to-one lead when the Frenchman called it a day.

"It's never a good way to finish a match like this,” Gulbis said. “I saw in the third set he started to struggle. But the first two sets were a very good level. If he had gone up two sets, I think he would have gone on to win. But I kept fighting and that's sport.

"It's exciting. It's my first time in the third round at Wimbledon. I beat Verdasco already this season. It's good. I'm going step by step."

Verdasco advanced to the third round with a straight-sets ousting of 31st seed Julien Benneteau. The 29-year-old is seeking his first Wimbledon round of 16 since 2009.

    (20) Mikhail Youzhny vs. Viktor Troicki

Twentieth seed Mikhail Youzhny trails World No. 44 Viktor Troicki 2-3 in the head-to-head series. Friday marks their first match on grass.

Youzhny made the round of 32 after surviving an extended match with Canada's Vasek Pospisil. The former World No. 8 came through the contest in five sets, 6-2, 6-7(3), 7-6(7), 3-6, 6-4. Youzhny is bidding for his 20th main-draw victory of the season.

Troicki is through to the third round by virtue of his 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 dismissal of Russia's Andrey Kuznetsov. The 27-year-old Belgrade native looks to make his second consecutive round of 16 at Wimbledon.
