  • Federer, Haas square off in Halle semifinals

    6/15/13 5:22 AM | Ricky Dimon
Federer, Haas square off in Halle semifinals A multiple-time champion will find himself back in the Halle title match, and it will be either Roger Federer or Tommy Haas. The two veterans are set to collide during semifinal action on Saturday.

Roger Federer and Tommy Haas will be meeting for the 14th time in their careers and for the first time since the final of this same event last year when they clash in the Gerry Weber Open semis on Saturday.

Federer is dominating the head-to-head series 10-3, but Haas triumphed 7-6(5), 6-4 last summer to take home the Halle title. The third-ranked Swiss has won three of their four previous grass-court encounters, including a 7-6(3), 7-5, 6-3 victory in the 2009 Wimbledon semifinals. They also faced each other at this same stage of the 2006 Halle tournament, with Federer prevailing 6-4, 6-7(4), 6-3.

At 35 years old, Haas is still playing some of the best tennis of his illustrious career. He is 27-10 for the season and is one spot away from breaking back into the Top 10. Haas, a recent French Open quarterfinalist, ousted Ernests Gulbis in straight sets on Wednesday before overcoming Gael Monfils 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-3.

Federer, bidding for his sixth Gerry Weber Open winner's trophy, also earned an opening-round bye as the No. 1 seed. The third-ranked Swiss eased past Cedrik-Marcel Stebe 6-3, 6-3 before humiliating Mischa Zverev 6-0, 6-0 on Friday. Still in search of his first 2013 ATP title, Federer is 24-7 for the season.

Something will have to give when these two friends and doubles partners (they lost on Monday in the first round) collide. Haas' current form would rival almost anyone on tour other than Rafael Nadal right now, he will have home-court advantage on Saturday, and he is a two-time Halle champion. Although Federer has not been on fire of late, his is a five-time winner of this event. Furthermore, the 31-year-old is arguably the best grass-court player in the history of tennis.

A slight upset would not come as a big surprise, but Federer in three sets is the pick.

Fed missing so much I think he needs a compass.

Haas in 2 tough sets is my pick. Federer really showing his age now. This was his best chance to win anything this year but looking like an empty season for the 2nd Goat(after Rafa the real goat)

Fed will take the 3rd but agree, this does not inspire confidence.

Don't forget the power of the draw. Fortunately Muzz is no. 2 otherwise we would have had the nightmare scenario of Rafa, Nole and Muzz all in one half.
The top half would have been a nightmare even more than RG.
The 3 would have bashed each other up and Fed would have taken the trophy. Luckily now all 3 cannot be on the same side so dear Fed has to face one who has not been bashed up by the other two.
But still with draws, scheduling etc, you never know what Wimbly will do to help Fed.

The only area Federer should be happy with is the serve. He hit 14 aces in the match I think. It's an improvement on the FO. He just needs to cut down his UE a fraction from the baseline.

Considering he had such a - what was the word Ricky used - are yes BRUTAL draw he has done well to get to the final. Now it will be just a walk in the park to collect the trophy.

Dont forget that wimbledone change seeds...And Roger won the last year...so he Might be seeded 2 ...And Rafa could be seeded 4 Behind murray.....wait and see what happens there

Fedzz22 , 6/15/13 3:20 PM

Well the back must be better if he was able to serve 14 aces.

ed251137 , 6/15/13 3:21 PM

Fedzz22, we don't joke about such things here on TT, draws and seedings are a sensitive area! Seriously though, I would not be surprised if Fed was seeded #2, but I would be very, very surprised if Rafa was seeded #4.

Yes, those aces, where were they during RG? Now I'm as cynical as you, was he playing possum per chance?

See no evil. Hear no evil. Speak no evil.
