  • Murray, Tsonga battle in London semifinal

    6/14/13 9:57 PM | Kelli DeMario
Murray, Tsonga battle in London semifinal World No. 2 Andy Murray looks to reach the final match at Queen's Club with a victory over World No. 7 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. The players are joined in semifinal play by defending champion Marin Cilic, who faces Lleyton Hewitt.

    (1) Andy Murray vs. (4) Jo-Wilfried Tsonga

Top seed Andy Murray holds a 7-2 lifetime advantage over fourth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. The Scot leads 3-1 on grass, which includes at semifinal victory at the 2012 Wimbledon Championships.

Murray is through to the semifinal after defeating Germany's Benjamin Becker in straight sets. The 26-year-old converted four of 8 break points en route to a 6-4, 7-6(3) victory. Murray is seeking his fourth ATP World Tour final of the season.

Tsonga advanced to the last four with a straight-sets ousting of American Denis Kudla. The Frenchman needed just 54 minutes to seal the victory late Friday, 6-3, 6-2. Tsonga is bidding for his second ATP World Tour final of the season.

    (5) Marin Cilic vs. Lleyton Hewitt

Fifth seed Marin Cilic trails former World No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt 0-1 in the series, having lost their only previous meeting at the 2012 Olympic Games. Friday marks their second match on grass.

Cilic continued his title defense with a quarterfinal victory over 2nd seed Tomas Berdych, 7-5, 7-6(4). The 24-year-old will attempt to make his first final since February, when he sealed a title-winning run in Zagreb.

Hewitt is through to the semifinal after holding on to dismiss third seed Juan Martin Del Potro, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2. The 32-year-old veteran converted four of 5 break points through 100 minutes of play.

"I just wanted to try to get as many matches as possible, really," Hewitt explained. "Throughout today, I played great. My ball striking was fantastic. Even though I was 0-4 down in the second set, I didn't really do too much wrong. He played incredible tennis."

The Australian looks to reach his fifth championship final in London.

murray .......... my pick

isfand , 6/15/13 3:44 AM

vamosrafa,

Really! Why Tsonga over Murray? I got to see Murray's match with Becker and he seemed to be playing some decent tennis. I have not seen Tsonga yet.

The tennis channel only starts their coverage at the quarterfinals. They have been covering Halle since the beginning.

I can't really made a well informed pick, given that I have seen only a little of Murry and nothing of Tsonga. I do think it should be a great match.

At least now I can get to the matches to the end.

Sorry, I meant to say - at least now I can get to SEE the matches.

Nativenewyorker , 6/15/13 6:47 AM

Uhmm. A tired Tsonga against a less than match sharp Murray. I suspect neither will be on top form so the match might not live up to expectatons but this is grass and Andy in front of his home crowd.
#NID

I'm going for Hewitt in the other SF. He is in his element on grass.

hewitt broken in 2nd set ........ guess its over for rusty

isfand , 6/15/13 7:25 PM

tsonga takes first set ......... hewitt breaks back still think it will be a murray-cilic final

isfand , 6/15/13 7:46 PM

Think Jo will win. He looks much quicker and more purposeful to me. Andy looks sluggish and his serving isn't gr8. Horrible cold conditions not helping.
Oh well, Andy couldn't lose to a nicer bloke.....:)

Now one of the commies tells us these are the 2 best grass courters there are. Do these people actually believe the BS they spout or do they just take us for fools! Only yesterday they were waxing lyrical about Roger the Messiah after his bagelling of a nonentity.

Ba humbug......

rafaisthebest , 6/15/13 8:03 PM

Is Tsonga mad? He could've broken a leg hurdling like that.

rafaisthebest , 6/15/13 8:51 PM

got both wrong..lol..

NNY, did not have any thoughts going into these picks...they were difinitely not well informed picks :) just had a feeling tsonga and hewitt would prevail :)

vamosrafa , 6/15/13 8:55 PM

Good win by Muzza, well deserved............

rafaisthebest , 6/15/13 8:57 PM

So it looks like Muzza and Fed will head into Wimby with grass court titles, well done! Good prep for Wimby....

rafaisthebest , 6/15/13 9:02 PM

Really surprised at that. Thought Andy was down and out.
Made of sterner stuff these days.
Let's Go Andy! Let's Go!

deuce , 6/15/13 9:11 PM

got both right :)

isfand , 6/15/13 9:48 PM

vamosrafa,

Thanks for the response. That's why I didn't make any picks, although I did get to see Tsonga's match against the American Kudla. It was no contest, so it wasn't possible to really judge Tsonga's form.

I am not surprised that Murray stepped up and got the win. He's more consistent and has the serve and the shots to challenge Tsonga. Sounds like it was a good one. As usual, I will catch it on the replay later today.

Where is luckystar? I know that she really likes Cilic. He is one of her favorites, after Rafa of course! He really seems to do well at this event. Nice to see him getting to another final as the defending champion.

I also want to see the Fed/Haas match. That one also went to three sets. What is going on with Youzhny getting to the final at Halle? I never saw that one coming. It should be easy pickings for Fed in the final.

Nativenewyorker , 6/15/13 9:51 PM

murray leads cilic 8-1 (the one us 4rth round remember)
federer leads youzhny 14 -0
i think the trends will prevail
looks like federer and murray for titles
