• Federer faces Zverev, Haas battles Monfils

Federer faces Zverev, Haas battles Monfils Roger Federer and Tommy Haas will continue their Halle campaigns on Friday. They are set for respective encounters with Mischa Zverev and Gael Monfils.

    (1) Roger Federer vs. (WC) Mischa Zverev

Federer and Zverev will be going head-to-head for the second time in their careers when they clash in the quarterfinals of the Gerry Weber Open on Friday. Their only prior meeting came more than three years ago on the clay courts of Rome, where Federer prevailed 7-6(3), 6-2. Zverev is making another rare appearance in the last eight of an ATP event after dismissing David Goffin and lucky loser Mirza Basic. The 156th-ranked German has doubled his previous 2013 ATP-level win total already this week.

Federer, a five-time champion in Halle, earned a first-round bye as the top seed before dismissing another German wild card--Cedrik Marcel-Stebe--on Wednesday. The third-ranked Swiss is 23-7 for the season and he is still in search of his first winner's trophy. Federer is not in dominant form at the moment, but he should have more than enough on grass to advance in straight sets.

    (3) Tommy Haas vs. Gael Monfils

Haas and Monfils will be squaring off for the fourth time in their careers and for the second time this season when they collide on Friday. Monfils leads the head-to-head series 2-1 after a 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 Auckland quarterfinal win back in January. Haas' lone victory over Monfils came via first-set retirement at the 2008 Cincinnati Masters. They have never faced each other on grass.

Both players have overcome injuries--Monfils more recently than Haas--and are playing great tennis at the moment. The 67th-ranked Frenchman heated up on clay and so far in Halle he has taken out both Milos Raonic and Jan Hernych in straight sets. Haas reached the French Open quarterfinals before getting a first-round bye in Halle as the No. 3 seed. The 35-year-old German, a two-time champion of this tournament, opened with a 7-6(5), 6-4 scalp of Ernests Gulbis on Thursday. Haas will likely want this one more than his opponent and he also has an edge on grass, so look for him to prevail in straight sets.

Double bagel. Fed was in a hurry today.

chr18 , 6/14/13 12:52 PM

was Fed in Godmode or did Zverev melt down? (or a bit of both?). As good as Fed is on grass it's not easy to see a double bagel in the ATP tour

Yeah but this is who he played...

Conspirator , 6/14/13 2:32 PM

Berdych just lost to Cilic

Shireling , 6/14/13 3:30 PM

Haven't reached for the panic button yet for Berdych but he needs to step up. I hate it when members of the Top 10 do not perform to their seeding..

WHAT WAS THAT! i dont remember a match on grass when one player didnt even win a single game
anybody who remembers any other

isfand , 6/14/13 4:09 PM

@isfand, does it matter? Really? Please let's not start with the "Fed is playing scintillating tennis" song now, okay? Let's make an assessment of his form when he wins his quarterfinal Wimby match, please?

rafaisthebest , 6/14/13 4:24 PM

I just watched the replay of Federer's double bagel.Zverev plays serve&volley, but has average serve and average volleys, bad movement&speed around the court, bad groundstrokes. He is practically 80's player, perhaps more physically fit,no wonder Fed destroyed him.

Ice , 6/14/13 4:26 PM

@rafaisthebest when have i said he is playing SCINTILLATING tennis SONG ? and i will surely wait till wimbledon 2nd week to make a assessment
was just curious if anyone remembers any other such match on grass ?

isfand , 6/14/13 4:44 PM

@isfand, did not say that is what you said, merely saying let's temper our expectations.

rafaisthebest , 6/14/13 4:55 PM

^^^^ agreed (a wise choice) and this is tennis even in life one should try not to jump to conclusions too quickly ....... patience is a great virtue

isfand , 6/14/13 5:03 PM

Especially when we try to gauge Fed's form after he has thrashed unknowns.

holdserve , 6/14/13 5:42 PM

I must say the Tennis Channel has really gotten better. They have been flipping back and forth live between Halle and Queens showing the more interesting parts of matches much like during a GS. Allez grass!

chr18 , 6/14/13 6:46 PM

Nice to hear you so animated and engaged chr18, you sounded quite despondent during the clay court season.............

rafaisthebest , 6/14/13 7:12 PM

chr20 kicked a dog he thought might be gay which cheered him up.
