• Federer, Tsonga collide in French Open quarterfinals

    6/3/13 6:03 AM | Ricky Dimon
Federer, Tsonga collide in French Open quarterfinals A semifinal spot will be at stake when Roger Federer goes up against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga on Tuesday at Roland Garros. The winner will face either David Ferrer or Tommy Robredo.

Roger Federer and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will be squaring off for the 13th time in their careers when they clash in the quarterfinals of the French Open on Tuesday.

Federer leads the head-to-head series 9-3 after getting past Tsonga 7-6(4), 4-6, 7-6(4), 3-6, 6-3 at the same stage of this year's Australian Open. Their only previous clay-court encounter came at the 2011 Rome Masters, where Federer cruised 6-4, 6-2. Tsonga's two most recent victories over the Swiss came during the summer of 2011; 3-6, 6-7(3), 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 at Wimbledon and 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-1 at the Montreal Masters.

The Roland Garros faithful have surely been anticipating this Federer-Tsonga showdown ever since the draw was revealed, and Tsonga put the fans through no kind of suspense on his side of the quarter. This fortnight's No. 6 seed has not dropped a single set in scalps of Aljaz Bedene, Jarkko Nieminen, Jeremy Chardy, and Viktor Troicki. A semifinalist in Monte-Carlo, Tsonga is a stellar 25-8 for the season.

Federer also raced through his first three rounds, ousting Pablo Carreno-Busta, Somdev Devvarman, and Julien Benneteau. That all changed on Sunday, when the world No. 3 overcame Gilles Simon 6-1, 4-6, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3. Federer is 22-6 for his 2013 campaign, which does not yet include a tournament title.

The key for Tsonga will be to serve well so that he can dictate play with his power game and pick on his opponent's backhand. There is no question the eighth-ranked Frenchman is capable of doing it--as he has done it in the past--but it remains to be seen if he can overcome the mental hurdle of the French Open quarterfinals. Tsonga has never been past this stage even though he held four match points during his bid for a semifinal last year against Novak Djokovic.

Federer's test against Simon will give him confidence in what is almost sure to be another tough one. Look for the 17-time Grand Slam champion to survive in five sets.

its a 50-50 ...tsonga just has to avoid those inconsitencies that often creep into his game...he can take fed down in 5 sets or even 4 sets..same goes for fed, he can win in 4 or 5...if it goes to 5, i pick tsonga..

vamosrafa , 6/3/13 11:50 PM

I don't know if this is being overhyped after Simon's great effort against Fed. Surviving that kind of test will give Fed good feelings and confidence as he faces Tsonga. The key with Tsonga is to serve well and be consistent. He can be up and down and all over the place. When he gets hot, then he can be very dangerous.

I have to believe that Tsonga will remember the lost opportunity last year against Nole. If he keeps it together mentally and plays his best game, then he has a shot. I would be surprised if this match doesn't go four or five sets.

Nativenewyorker , 6/4/13 12:01 AM

This will hinge very much on the Tsonga serve. He's clocked the fastest serve at this tournament so far and has won an average of 80% points on his first serve. Unlike a lot of the other French players who become overwhelmed by the weight of expectations, Tsonga feeds off the crowd support and Roger is not a happy bunny when this happens.

ed251137 , 6/4/13 12:01 AM

Will the French crowd support Tsonga or Fed or will it be split? We know that the French love Fed. I do agree that Tsonga is a player who does feed off the energy of the crowd. He also loves to play to them.

Nativenewyorker , 6/4/13 12:11 AM

I am not sure if the crowd will be firmly behind Tsonga. I still remember a few years back when Federer was playing Monfils in the French open quarterfinals(Monfils is another player who feeds off the crowd support) the crowd seemed to be split, and often unsure of whom to support. As for this match whoever has the better serving day will probably win. Should be a good one.

tj600 , 6/4/13 2:41 AM

This match is up to Tsonga. If he keep this level, he will win it in 4.

Emiliano55 , 6/4/13 2:42 AM

"I am not sure if the crowd will be firmly behind Tsonga."

You are right TJ600. Maestro is supported against even home players in Paris, London and Oz land. As either Tignor/weirthem recently mentioned, Federer's popularity is only rivaled by Borg's popularity in the early 80s. Universally acclaimed legends of the game.

This should be as exhilarating as the stan-gasquet or haas-isner or federer-simon match. If Jo ever wants to win a FO, this is his chance. He has a federer who has declined, 2 spanish chokers and a final where the crowd will firmly be after him.

Jo has been playing his best tennis and he gets a 55-45 edge. It would have been 50-50 if Maestro closed out the simon in 3 sets, but at his age and after around 1100 matches on the tour, it is not easy to recover from a 5 setter/physically demanding match.

May the better player win and whoever wins, just save all of us the trouble of watching another boring spanish player getting hammered by giving them a free pass to the final.

JamesDjokovicFan , 6/4/13 3:04 AM

Real QF, all other QFs are jokes, hand picked.

sabs , 6/4/13 3:43 AM

I think Tsonga is in for a real chance but what concerns me about him is the musht stuff between his ears!!! The likes of Fed and Rafa are always cool under pressure so they are always able to come up with their best game unlike the likes of Tsonga who play the worst under pressure!!!!

I feel this game might go to five as some rightly said that Tsonga feed on crowd energy, but will he play the important points well when Federer puts him under pressure?!!! If Federer fall on his face again Tsonga might have a lot more than a chance and win!!!!..hehehe!!!!

Allez Tsonga!!!!

Monalysa , 6/4/13 4:27 AM

So RAFANs are supporting Tsonga.. hmmm

sabs , 6/4/13 5:24 AM

If this match goes to the 5th it would be Fed...

Tsonga for the win in 4!

phoenix , 6/4/13 5:55 AM

The trouble with the French players is that they do not know how to control their emotions. Being emotional is energy sapping so you gotta know when to let emotions take over. Look at Gasquet yesterday. Tignor remarked early on in the match that Gasquet was too pumped too early, he needed to learn to pace himself. It came to pass, he had nothing left in the tank come the business end of the match. Tsonga is the same. He will be high at the beginning and then flame out when it matters.

rafaisthebest , 6/4/13 6:53 AM

sabs, 6/4/13 5:24 AM,

Why do you lump all Rafa fans together? Does it sound from my post earlier that I am supporting Tsonga? Phoenix made his prediction based on what he thinks will happen. That's why we try to do. We know that Tsonga has the capability to push Fed and beat him. But can he do it here?

I am not even sure who the crowd will be supporting. I think there will be divided loyalties. I would like to see a good match. At the end, may the best man win.

Nativenewyorker , 6/4/13 7:15 AM

Go Rog! I don't wanna see that dance. Although it's a cool dance.

xrf , 6/4/13 7:42 AM

Hoping for a corker! No damp squibs please. If Jo can hold his head together, too close to call.
Mind you, big if.

deuce , 6/4/13 8:36 AM

the maestro's play in the 4th and 5th set against Simon was top notch...I dont think Tsonga has too much of a chance. BUT Fed can be up and down these days, so you never know

atul1985 , 6/4/13 8:54 AM

federer for the win in 4/5

isfand , 6/4/13 10:22 AM

the maestro's play in the 4th and 5th set against Simon was top notch...I dont think Tsonga has too much of a chance. BUT Fed can be up and down these days, so you never know
, 6/4/13 8:54 AM

top notch? He was at best above avearge in 4th and 5th , atleast the 5th which I saw. Simon overhit and made errors and gifted the match.

sanju , 6/4/13 10:47 AM

Fed in 4 or 5 because Tsonga will not have patience to take it easy in crucial moments and he will make silly errors

sanju , 6/4/13 10:50 AM

I thought it was top notch, he simply didnt allow Simon to dictate anymore forcing him to take more risks leading to overhit shots...4th set especially was superb

atul1985 , 6/4/13 10:54 AM

I am a Rafan who will be supporting Tsonga in today's match even though I know he will lose.

rafaisthebest , 6/4/13 11:25 AM

Did not c 4th but in 5th he ws just above average, only blocking the ball and keeping it in play and kinda luring Simon to make errors

sanju , 6/4/13 11:31 AM

There's always a big IF hanging over J-W's head. For me it's a toss up whether he will overplay, which is more than likely with the home crowd urging him on, or he will err on the side of caution.

Cant call this one. Which makes it even more interesting. High stakes for both of them.

ed251137 , 6/4/13 11:31 AM

I thought all the quarterfinals would be on Chatrier, I was wrong. Ferru/Robredo is on Lenglen today. I expect the Novak/Haas match to be on Lenglen tomorrow since he has not played on Lenglen yet, but you never know..........

rafaisthebest , 6/4/13 11:46 AM

Personally, I feel the outcome of this match will depend on Fed. If he shows the fighting spirit he showed in the Simon match, Tsonga does not have a prayer. If Fed comes out flat Tsonga may have a chance but I would still expect hubris to get the better of Jo, and snatch defeat from the jaws of any potential victory.............

rafaisthebest , 6/4/13 12:31 PM

I'm still going for a place bet.

ed251137 , 6/4/13 12:35 PM

Tsonga in 4
(altough I'd prefer Fed to win)

Shireling , 6/4/13 12:53 PM

Tsonga for the win.

Vamos JW !!!

Raindrops , 6/4/13 1:28 PM

rafaisthebest, 6/4/13 11:25 AM

If Tsonga plays his best, he will win. Unfortunately, he only plays his best <1% of the time.

The French will cheer for Tsonga until it appears that Tsonga will win at which point they will cheer for Fed (same as the Simon match).

Fed in three.

Conspirator , 6/4/13 1:50 PM

Actually, I would have thought the majority of Nadal fans would be going for Federer over Tsonga, as then it makes it more likely for their guy to embarrass Federer on Sunday. Tsonga probably has a better chance than Fed of giving Nadal a challenge in the finals, anyway.

Bharata , 6/4/13 2:57 PM

@ Bharata, you would think so but we Rafa fans like tennis more than anything else, and we are not afraid of any of Rafa's potential opponents, esp on clay!! We love Rafa bcos we know he is a legend, he's a rock star of tennis, win or lose. It would be stupid to me to support Federer simply bcos we think Rafa may take him to the slaughter IF they meet in the finals!! Most Rafans are not of that mindset!!!

For me, I like Tsonga bcos he's got game but he really needs to start stepping up when it REALLY matters!! I was very disappointed in his game with Novak last year where he threw it all away!!! Until he can show his metal in such situations I am not tempted to give him the edge over Roger, esp in a SLAM where it is very diffcult to take Roger down!!

Just hoping for a great game, some good tennis!! May the best man win...........allez!!!

Monalysa , 6/4/13 3:06 PM

Bharata, I'm sure it works both ways, no?

What fed fan ever cheered for Rafa?

Conspirator , 6/4/13 3:43 PM

I'm one of those rare things that, being a Rafan, I also like Fed...

Shireling , 6/4/13 4:25 PM

@Shireling, you need to change your name then to combine your favs, let me help you: RoRa, RaRo or maybe.............Naderer20-10! I mean, everyone's doing fancy combos like that.............

rafaisthebest , 6/4/13 4:32 PM

indeed, Shireling, don't get left behind the groovy cool trends

chlorostoma , 6/4/13 4:38 PM

Game on!!! Things look on Tsong for now!!!!!!

Monalysa , 6/4/13 4:39 PM

Shirling: You do realise, I trust, that admission will be enough to get you sent to coventry ;-)

ed251137 , 6/4/13 4:40 PM

Tsonga already broken!!!!.................ummm!!!

Monalysa , 6/4/13 4:41 PM

This is going to be quick, in Fed's favour..............

rafaisthebest , 6/4/13 4:43 PM

J-W has left most of his brain in the locker room. What's new?

ed251137 , 6/4/13 4:45 PM

How can a pro forget to change his racket at the change of ends with new balls coming in?

rafaisthebest , 6/4/13 4:48 PM

Ooops Fed gets broken back!!!................interesting!!

Monalysa , 6/4/13 4:55 PM

Rafa fans trashin Ali for not helping them with their fantasies to see Federer out so they can have one of the 2nd grade junk-ballers like ferrer/robredo get a easy pass to the final.

You have to be an uncouth moron to criticise a wonderful player like Tsonga. He has an explosive game and is a huge-hit with crowds all over the world. If the ATP had not slowed down the playing conditions from the 90s, Tsonga might well have had a Grandslam, if not more. Unfortunately, rafatards with their blinders on cannot see it. Cannot expect more from clown who worship a one-surface pony with 0 personality.

Fedkovic23 , 6/4/13 4:56 PM

Edward as usual misleads. No one gets sent to coventry for saying they love Fed. They are distrusted when they make anti Rafa posts like claiming Muzz humiliated Rafa or that Rafa's OCDs are nightmarish for his opponent (by pretending to talk about Bartoli but making it clear they are talking about Rafa by following up with another post expressing fake fear of being attacked) or inventing the word rosolled.

holdserve , 6/4/13 4:58 PM

But Federer is very nervous and uptight. He almost never sweats but is wiping his face with his wrist band between every point.

ed251137 , 6/4/13 4:58 PM

I just said I like Fed.. didn't say he was one of my favs ;-)

Shireling , 6/4/13 5:01 PM

Holdserve: Hold off with the attacks, at least until this match is over. You too Fedkovic.

ed251137 , 6/4/13 5:02 PM

There's a reason they call Fed the maestro................

rafaisthebest , 6/4/13 5:04 PM

Hope Fed loses. He doesn't deserve to win propping himself up with rigged draws and schedules.

holdserve , 6/4/13 5:05 PM

Fed is getting pumped up. Tsonga is too pumped up.

Monalysa , 6/4/13 5:08 PM

Rafa's set "droppings" don't look so bad now, do they?

rafaisthebest , 6/4/13 5:09 PM

They shouldn't have given Fed a bye in the first 2 rounds.

nadline , 6/4/13 5:10 PM

But I still think Roger will make it!

rafaelo , 6/4/13 5:10 PM

too soon to say yet but, if Tsonga ends up winning this, he could prove a hardier test for Rafa than Fed himself.... I wonder if Mr. Knowitall Yannick is re-writing his predictions now

Shireling , 6/4/13 5:11 PM

I still have Fed winning but he will have to fight, setting him up nicely for Ferru........

I've oftened pondered about the same thing nadline, 6/4/13 5:17 PM

Shireling , 6/4/13 5:18 PM

Seriously what is with all the hate. People need to just look at the facts. Fed is GOAT, most weeks at number 1 and most GS. Even Nadal says this is what is most important. Nadal is a huge champion though. Yes the courts have slowed down, but he has still won at the US open and been consistently good on the faster hard courts. He might not win as much, but people need to open their eyes.

As for Djokovic, he had an amazing 2011. But he hasn't acheived nearly as much as nadal or federer. Just count the wins and GS. Stop criticizing the grinding style or slowing of courts. Sports change, if people fail to adapt that is their own fault. No matter what the changes are, you still have to be good to dominate.

DeadManWalking , 6/4/13 5:19 PM

@ Nadline

I agree, this may go to five and Fed may be hoping that Tsonga loses some of his "pump"! But for now, this is a slauggter on both sides of the divide..........Ferrer?..........whoof.......he's on fire!!!

Monalysa , 6/4/13 5:19 PM

sabs, good for you to come on here and cheer for your man, instead leaving Rafans to talk amongst themselves.

nadline , 6/4/13 5:21 PM

sabs , 6/4/13 5:28 PM

Is this overwhelming love by the French for Fed a figment of someone's imagination? When they were introduced on court, they got the same level of cheer and Rob Bonnett on Eurosport declared Fed to have had the loudest cheer, thank goodness Rusedski put him in his place.

nadline , 6/4/13 5:29 PM

If he does then it is the icing on the cakings, no?

Fed to break here and win in four.

Conspirator , 6/4/13 5:37 PM

They should not have claimed that Fed is the GOAT, too many people like goat curry.

nadline , 6/4/13 5:37 PM

Ferru doesn't need much cheering.. 5-1 in the 2nd set but surely Tommy is coming back :)

Shireling , 6/4/13 5:38 PM

rafaisthebest , 6/4/13 5:43 PM

Are people not watching how well ferrer is playing. Depth of the shots and hugging the lines. He's playing as consistent as 2008 nadal, without the power. But maybe for RG 2013, consistency is all you need - especially looking at the number of UE the top 3 are hitting.

DeadManWalking , 6/4/13 5:43 PM

Maybe Conspirator should just take a leap and go for Tsonga in 4.

nadline , 6/4/13 5:43 PM

Shirling, in answer to your question Fed's serve was 66% lst set, 77% 2nd set.
His problem is win% was only 59% and 65%.

ed251137 , 6/4/13 5:46 PM

I have a feeling Fed would like to be somewhere else now

Shireling , 6/4/13 5:46 PM

Question is, who will join him, Fed or Tsonga?

Damn it, Fed, wake up! Break Tsonga......

Shireling , 6/4/13 6:03 PM

Monalysa... it's a tall order beating Belgian beer

Shireling , 6/4/13 6:05 PM

Ferru has not dropped a set so far...............

rafaisthebest , 6/4/13 6:06 PM

Tsonga serve is slacking off a bit.

ed251137 , 6/4/13 6:06 PM

Good old cheater Fed... showing the false mark again :)
OK. One more Stefan Edberg Prize deserved for Mirka's pet.

zare , 6/4/13 6:06 PM

@ Shireliing

Dont think much of my comment, know absolutely nothing about beer!!!! But ill take your word for it!!!

Monalysa , 6/4/13 6:07 PM

You guys both near Belgium, no?

I just realized Ricky's pick in five looks to be correct.

Damn you to hell Dimon!!!!!

Conspirator , 6/4/13 6:07 PM

That's the 2nd straightforward smash Fed has messed up on.

ed251137 , 6/4/13 6:09 PM

@ Conspirator,

Im from St. Lucia, a very beautiful island in the Caribbean!!!!

Monalysa , 6/4/13 6:09 PM

Yeah BABY...BODY ShOT!!!!

zare , 6/4/13 6:10 PM

JW in front again

sabs , 6/4/13 6:10 PM

Tsonga Tslams Fed in the Tshoulder.

Conspirator , 6/4/13 6:10 PM

And the hits keep coming, literally............

rafaisthebest , 6/4/13 6:11 PM

Getting that break was a fluke for Tsonga. Now will Tsonga stay cool or hand it back.

ed251137 , 6/4/13 6:12 PM

Oh dear..........!

Monalysa , 6/4/13 6:12 PM

That's ok Mona. Beer tastes better in the hot weather, no?

Conspirator , 6/4/13 6:13 PM

Where is @seventeen??

rafaisthebest , 6/4/13 6:13 PM

Conspirator, time to plunge for Tsonga in 3.

nadline , 6/4/13 6:14 PM

One more JO... one more.... ALLEZ!

zare , 6/4/13 6:14 PM

Oh oh. I'm starting to believe.

Conspirator , 6/4/13 6:14 PM

the beginning of the end for Fed?

phoenix , 6/4/13 6:14 PM

Two sets and a break down, the French commie has just described Federer as having his back against the wall. Understatement or what?

But the crowd has still not erupted.

ed251137 , 6/4/13 6:15 PM

I'm still holding our for Fed in 5............

rafaisthebest , 6/4/13 6:15 PM

Match point

sabs , 6/4/13 6:16 PM

Ferru in the finals.....

rafaisthebest , 6/4/13 6:17 PM

nadline , 6/4/13 6:18 PM

YES! Allez JO! I hope he beats Ferrer and makes it into the final :D

tj600 , 6/4/13 6:18 PM

Allez Tsonga!!!!!

Monalysa , 6/4/13 6:18 PM

Must be the last RG for Federer.

Congrats JW, go all the way.

sabs , 6/4/13 6:18 PM

Preferential scheduling and rigged draws can only get you so far.

nadline , 6/4/13 6:20 PM

That was kind of painful to watch. Looks like the Fed has lost a lot of confidence. Commies to Fed fans, his age seems to be catching up with him.

ts38 , 6/4/13 6:20 PM

Sad for Sabs.

ed251137 , 6/4/13 6:20 PM

Commiserations @sabs..........he's still the GOAT.

rafaisthebest , 6/4/13 6:20 PM

If I was a betting man, i'd put money on both tsonga and ferrer. Their odds are insanely good.

DeadManWalking , 6/4/13 6:23 PM

Im glad Tsonga was able to keep it together!!! Good for him, but today he may have had just too much fire power for poor old Rog!!!!

Monalysa , 6/4/13 6:23 PM

Thanks for all the memories, especially 2009.
Allez, move on to Grass.

#It was humiliating

sabs , 6/4/13 6:23 PM

So where to from here for the establishment? Give him qualifiers all the way to a final? C'mon,.....................

rafaisthebest , 6/4/13 6:24 PM

Oh, don't @sabs, it hurts but he's a Champion, he'll find a way. Don't give up. As long as his hat's in the ring, he has a chance.........

rafaisthebest , 6/4/13 6:28 PM

So many negative comments, mostly from Zare predictably, dont understand why some people hate Fed so much. Roger will be fine, he got outplayed today but he should have a strong showing at Wimby. Allez Fed, Allez JW.

willmw101 , 6/4/13 6:30 PM

Hater is talking about hate posts...LOL...

zare , 6/4/13 6:32 PM

What on earth happened? I woke up and turned on the tennis channel to see that Tsonga won in straight sets!

I don't believe it. I thought for sure this would go four or five. Unbelievable. I have to see the replay of this later on.

Nativenewyorker , 6/4/13 6:32 PM

LOL good one zare LOL hehe LOL OMG LOL ROFL ROFLMAO LOL forever.

willmw101 , 6/4/13 6:40 PM

Federer will be lucky to reach Quarterfinals and if he does, Tsonga will definitely kick his poor ass.

Rafa all the way to Championship.

The idiots will say anything to salve their hurt:

RT @SI_BTBaseline: "Remember when Tsonga dismantled Nadal in the 2008 AO SF? Beat him 62 63 62 in less than 2 hours. His composure today felt a lot like that. "

What has Rafa got to do with this? Why can't these people deal with their hurt and stop the rationalisations? Fed was outplayed today, they need to just deal with it and move on.............

rafaisthebest , 6/4/13 6:42 PM

Bah. Tsonga was brilliant. Roger was horrible.
Congratulations Tsonga, go all the way!
To grass, Rog!

xrf , 6/4/13 6:42 PM

@NNY - Tsonga outplayed fed. But fed also shanked a lot of balls and missed a lot.

DeadManWalking , 6/4/13 6:44 PM

where is fuccing seventeen, that idiot fedkovic, rogervic and the other combo of federinas and jokovic? They just vanished with no trace haha.

what about their lunatic queen scoretracker, why so quiet, busy eating crows? LOL

Raindrops , 6/4/13 6:45 PM

Tsonga played incredible tennis. The best bit was that this match ended quickly, plus he gets 2 days of rest. So there will be no emotional fatigue against Ferrer. Ferrer will be hard to beat, but I think Tsonga has the game to beat him. We will see....

tj600 , 6/4/13 6:45 PM

Is that your Mandarine Chinese ??? There is hope for you, just try to act like you are normal.

zare , 6/4/13 6:47 PM

Thanks for info about how it went down. I did not think it was going down like this, but maybe the battle with Simon was a precursor to what was going to happen.

Yes, I notice that none of the Fed trolls are here. What happened? They should support their guy even in defeat.

Nativenewyorker , 6/4/13 6:48 PM

zare I wouldn't expect you to understand sarcasm considering that your linguistic abilities seem akin to those of a beaver.

willmw101 , 6/4/13 6:53 PM

Wow! Go Jo! Go! Magnifique :)

deuce , 6/4/13 6:55 PM

Match stats:

Winners:25 to 26
UEs: 34 to 22

Visually, it didn't look like it, but this was a match won on small margins. Jo did everything that little better. So, I don't think it's fair to say Fed was horrible, small margins made the difference.

Come to think of it, Tsonga employed the Rosol, Brand, Gulbis strategy of hitting big, painting the lines and it paid off today. A high risk strategy. This is what the lower ranked guys have realised is their only chance against the big guys. So, those who say this strategy only works against Rafa better think again............

Roger laughed when Rosol employed the strategy to oust Rafa at Wimby, I bet he's not laughing today...............

rafaisthebest , 6/4/13 6:56 PM

Told you so guys. Tsonga was playing terrific and Federer, well, he will be retiring at the end of the year I guess.

Emiliano55 , 6/4/13 6:57 PM

Conspirator , 6/4/13 7:00 PM

This is sweet:

RT @Ringham7: "Former Swiss No 1 Marc Rosset thinks Federer played too fast. "He should have slowed it down. Given him more spin. Strange." "

So basically they are saying Fed should have used Rafa's "offending" tactics. Expect Fed to seek a cancellation of the new time violation enforcement rule............

rafaisthebest , 6/4/13 7:01 PM

I thought that Tsonga would have to come out and play his best. He needed to serve well and be consistent. Fed with 34 UE's is more than normal but not horrible.

So it would appear that Tsonga did what Simon could not. I am sure Fed is not laughing now. To get knocked out in straight sets in the quarterfinals of a slam is not a pleasant experience for him.

Nativenewyorker , 6/4/13 7:01 PM

RT @PseudoFed: "Reached the finals of the Quarters! HI$TORY #humble"

rafaisthebest , 6/4/13 7:05 PM

rafaelo , 6/4/13 7:09 PM

Of course the trolls will come out and tell us Fed's loss was part of a grand strategy on his part to save himself for Wimby. He lost because he chose to.

rafaisthebest , 6/4/13 7:09 PM

I think the trolls will pin their hopes on ABR! Anyone but Rafa! They will latch onto Nole and hope that he can defeat Rafa in the semis. When you have nothing to root for, then you root against.

Nativenewyorker , 6/4/13 7:14 PM

1000+ matches on ATP, never retired in a single match. Only 2 walkovers. He is the epitome of fitness.

In perhaps the best non-laver year on tour, the guy played closed to 100 matches. He went 92-5 and made 16 out of 17 tournament finals. Those 16 finals included the 5 premier tournaments on the ATP calendar and 6 masters. Super-man Federer!

since there is no rafa thread thanks to ricky and cherry: erence.html

rafaelo , 6/4/13 7:43 PM

So that Rosol strategy does work on Fed heh? So whose turn to laugh this time? Come to think of it, Fed is not only losing to the trio of top guys - Rafa/Nole/Murray - but also to the big hitters consisting of Delpo/Berdych/Sod/Tsonga in the slams. He's also susceptible to the big hitters.

Congrats to Tsonga, he played an almost flawless match to beat Fed in straight sets and on clay! It'll be interesting to see how the little man Ferrer handles this Tsonga. I'll bet Ferrer will fare better than Fed against Tsonga. Fed simply has no answer to Tsonga's big serves; Ferrer is a better returner of serves (than Fed), so he'll think of a way to handle Tsonga. Ferrer has no problem returning Raonic's serves on clay, at Barcelona one year. He also dispatched Anderson, another big server, in style at the previous round, impressive! Though Tsonga has all the fire power to hit anyone off the court, Ferrer is an incredible retriever and great mover(perhaps second only to Rafa) on clay, he'll most likely return many things Tsonga throws at him, frustrating the hell out of Tsonga.

I think it'll be an interesting match, certainly more interesting than this Fed/Tsonga match.

luckystar , 6/4/13 7:49 PM

Saw 1st set and then had to go to a dinner party. Was shocked Fed lost 1st after being break up. Thought Fed will come back and win in 4 n 5, surprised he lost in 3

He did himself a favour actually, if the Fed we saw on Sunday and today were to face Rafa or Novak in finals, he would get thrashed badly. He saved his energies for Wimby where he can do well.

Atleast good thing the cowards and trolls will be burying their face in the toilet hole for 1 day at a bare minimm and not show their ugly heads :-)

sanju , 6/4/13 7:50 PM

I dont think Tsonga or Ferrer may be able to beat Novak or Rafa whoever reaches the final. They may stretch, push them but defeat..I doubt

Looks good on the fuccing bots though (S/T, 20, crap10-20, ts20, FedFedFedovics, etc.!!!). To you I say, that was fuccing AWESOME!!!!!!

Tsonga was in that rare <1% mode today. Not many would beat him on a day like today (except for a certain left-handed spaniard). He was unreal. I don't think he can keep it up.

Ferru in the final as per ritb.

At least ricky was wrong (for different reasons).

Either Tsonga or Ferrer will be the first men's finalist outside the Big Four in the last 11 Grand Slams (since Berdych at 2010 Wimbledon).

That's cause Rafa and Nole are in the same half.

Roger Rasheed is a huge Rafa admirer actually , hope u guys know that. I have read many tweets of him speaking highly of Rafa.

I think Ferrer has been quietly going through the draw with ease. I am looking forward to see him play Tsonga. Can Tsonga keep it up after taking out Fed? He didn't use up a lot of energy and won easily. I think Ferrer will give him a match for sure.

Fascinating to know that Tsonga and Rasheed looked at tape of how Rafa beats Fed!

The support for Tsonga was noticeably muted until the last frame of the match. Whether out of sympathy for Fed's plight or because the match lacked drama was hard to judge. J-W played some awesome winners but also some dumb UEs. Roger was flat from the word go and patently nervous: then when his serve failed to click he became panicky and went into shank mode.

rafaisthebest , 6/4/13 8:46 PM

Regarding Tsonga's comments about his chances in the semis, the fact is that he must go into that match believing that he can win. Otherwise it's over before he even goes on court. The one quality that has been lacking in Tsonga was mental strength and consistency. In the semis we will see if Tsonga now has those qualities.

Beating Fed is going to give Tsonga a great deal of confidence. The fact that he didn't have to kill himself in a five setter is also important. Ferrer doesn't quit, never gives the match away. He knows that this may be his last good shot at making a slam final. So there will be great motivation for both players.

Nativenewyorker , 6/4/13 8:46 PM

Not greatly surprised to see Tsonga taking the match. If anything I thought Fed would sell his hide a little bit dearer than that. Fed's mind and body are just not as much up to the task of fighting that hard when things are getting tough as they used to be. Can't blame him, he's been playing everything for so many years that it's just the normal thing.
Commiserations to his true fans - I have a feeling he will come back strong in Wimby and the hard court season.
As for Tsonga.. kudos for him! Good to see that somebody else other than the Big (boring) Four.. even it it's painful for the fans. I think he has a good chance of winning this title, he's got to be the crowd's favorite now.

Shireling , 6/4/13 8:47 PM

@nadline, yes fortunately :) but the tactic is the same! the point is to execute well ;) the thing that nole is doing accurately ;)

rafaelo , 6/4/13 8:48 PM

Brad Gilbert had tweeted..RG will repent not bumping Rafas seeding up to 2 as they will have a squib final. He seems to be right.

sanju , 6/4/13 8:51 PM

Brad Gilbert isn't saying anything that we didn't know already. Even if Fed beat Tsonga, the final would have been anticlimactic..

There would have been way too much controversy if they bumped Rafa up to #2 seed. Now if they didn't place them both in the same half of the draw, then we could have had a great final.

Nativenewyorker , 6/4/13 8:55 PM

a djokovic -Tsonga rematch would have been incredible ! After failing to concert 4 match points last year, Tsonga may well have taken revenge given how he played...But novak is a very different player than roger is....just saying, I really wanted to see this match happening...

vamosrafa , 6/4/13 9:17 PM

NNY, exactly! Fed Rafa final would've been even more of a dud than a possible Tsonga Rafa or even Tsonga Djokovic.

childishgambino , 6/4/13 9:21 PM

do not forget about ferru! he has a better chance of reaching final i think

rafaelo , 6/4/13 9:26 PM

Did anyone clock Jean Gachassin's face during the match? Usually he's beaming from ear to ear when a Frenchie is doing well but to day he looked more and more glum as the match wore on. He was probably thinking about having to face the wrath of sponsors and TV companies after assuring them Federer would be in the final.

#President French Tennis Federation

ed251137 , 6/4/13 9:56 PM

A loss is a loss. Great match by Tsonga. As NNY mentioned, his mental strength has done him in on many occasions... but if he were to win any GS, it'd be nice if it were his home slam. Glad to see one of Ferrer/Tsonga will at least make the final.

Onto Wimby, Roger.

aegis , 6/4/13 11:42 PM

I remember some who said that Fed was already in the final. No one ever has a ticket to the final in a slam. Even with an easy draw early on, at some point Fed will meet a top ten player. So this idea that a supposedly rigged draw will help him, is simply not the case at this point in time.

That's why I love how Rafa approaches playing in slams. Even if he is the favorite, Rafa never thinks that he has a ticket to the final. He knows that it has to be earned. His humility is real. He takes his opponents seriously. He knows that if he doesn't play well then he won't win. He said that after his match with Fognini.

Rafa takes it one match at a time. He never assumes or takes anything for granted.

Nativenewyorker , 6/4/13 11:53 PM

The rigged draw did help him.

Conspirator , 6/5/13 1:28 AM

rafaisthebest, 6/4/13 6:56 PM

Not true.
He laughed at how Rosol celebrated after the match and ofcourse not at RAFA's loss.
Please read Fed's presser carefully.
His pressers are being twisted to suit certain arguments/associations.

sabs , 6/5/13 4:39 AM

Wonderful that he of the rigged draws and preferential scheduling lost and that too in straight sets.
Count on Wimbledon to rig the draw even more heavily. They did that last year and will do so again. High time Fed retired!

holdserve , 6/5/13 5:25 AM

I'll never want to see a Djoko/Tsonga final here, sorry, not at the expense of Rafa! Nole/Tsonga can wait till the AO.

I'm confident that Rafa will make it to the final regardless of who he faces in the SF. Until Rafa really loses here, I'm going with Rafa all the way. I feel we may be seeing a Rafa/Ferrer final here, episode four this year so far, with Rafa again winning it after a good fight (similar to their recent Rome encounter).

luckystar , 6/5/13 6:08 AM

@sabs, the fact that we are talking about it and drawing different conclusions from it means he should not have said it in the first place, but how many times have we said this about Federer?

I said before one of the reasons I saw Fed losing at the semis was his lower back problem. I believe that is one of the reasons he missed those easy volleys and smashes. And when has Fed ever gone through a whole match without posting a single ace? His back was hurting. And the Simon roughing up did not help.....

rafaisthebest , 6/5/13 6:53 AM

Agree with you @luckystar!

rafaisthebest , 6/5/13 6:55 AM

Fed said he had no physical issues in his presser, unless I'm missing something.

nadline , 6/5/13 8:01 AM

nadline , 6/5/13 8:01 AM

He doesn't want to give away his weaknesses with Wimby just around the corner. He is defending Champ after all. And remember how the FedFanClub (the media) has set him up as the contrast to Rafa's "injury excuses" post defeat, he has a lot to live up to, no? Don't think Fed could bear the opprobrium they would heap on him if he were to admit to, gulp, being injured post this defeat!

However, If it had been Rafa who had beaten him, the injury would have been mentioned by the FedFanClub quickly, to diminish the win by Rafa.

No, the FedFanClub will broach the back injury subject after he gets bundled out of Wimby early..........

rafaisthebest , 6/5/13 8:15 AM

I personally dont think Fed will defend Wimby. Thats my take.

Thare are enough people who can take him down - Rafa, Djoo, Murray, Tsonga, Berdy and he will have to cross atleast 2 of them to win.

sanju , 6/5/13 8:35 AM

My reading of Fed's performance and the conclusions are the same as RITB's. He was struggling and it wasn't all down to the on-fire Tsonga. Nor was his grim faced expression throughout and after the match due only to disappointment. Mirka's concerned expression each time the camera was on her also told a story.

ed251137 , 6/5/13 9:40 AM

I watched the whole match and I can say that Fed played as terrible as he played vs Rafa in Rome. It's like he doesn't have the power, will to success and determination anymore. Countless of times he hit the ball into the stands, his BH was very poor but esp. his movement was below par. He should retire I suppose mainly because he damages his undisputed reputation. Vamos Rafa, let's go all the way...

arwen , 6/5/13 10:30 AM

Fed looked like he wanted to be somewhere else...he was below par and did not look himself...although we have to give credit to Tsonga for believing in himself and playing good tennis, I still don't think Fed made it any difficult to Tsonga to play his game...
when I first saw the RG draw my only comment was that it was SO UNFORTUNATE to have a final before the final...Nole vs. Rafa match will be breathtaking and it should have been the two of them in the finals. So sad that one of them will not make it to the final where they both belong...they are far better and superior to any other player on tour right now...

Vamos Rafa!

natashao , 6/5/13 10:59 AM

Didn't get to see the match, sounds like that's a good thing! Is Feds hunger still there? Sounds like he just didn't want to know when the going got tough. Fair play to JW though, I hope he goes on to make the final now. Ferrer can't threaten Rafa or Nole and if Tsonga is on sounds like he can do some damage! Off to Halle now for Fed, I just hope his fortunes change on grass. Rio 2016 looks a long way off now. I really don't want to see a fall from grace from Roger. is 1100 tour matches finally catching up with him? Looks like it, I still believe in him though, always will.
