• Gulbis, Monfils collide in second round

    5/28/13 10:17 PM | Kelli DeMario
Gulbis, Monfils collide in second round Latvia's Ernests Gulbis looks to continue his bid at the French Open with a victory over former world No. 7 Gael Monfils. The players are joined in second-round play by 14th seed Milos Raonic, who takes on veteran Michael Llodra.

    Ernests Gulbis vs. Gael Monfils

World No. 40 Ernests Gulbis recorded his 20th ATP-level win of the season with a first-round dismissal of Spain's Rogerio Dutra Silva. The 24-year-old Latvian came through his opener in straight sets, 6-1, 7-6(4), 6-3. Gulbis looks to record consecutive victories at the French Open for the first time since 2008.

Former world No. 7 Gael Monfils survived an extended opening-round battle with 5th seed Tomas Berdych on Monday. The 26-year-old Frenchman lost a two-sets-to-love edge against the Czech before breaking at 5-5 in the fifth. Monfils is seeking his 17th main-draw victory of the season.

    (14) Milos Raonic vs. Michael Llodra

World No. 16 Milos Raonic holds a 5-0 series advantage over world No. 55 Michael Llodra. The two are set to play their first clay-court match since 2011.

Raonic made a successful start to his campaign with four-set win over Belgium's Xaiver Malisse. The 22-year-old struck 16 aces through 116 minutes of play. Raonic is bidding for his 20th main-draw victory of the season.

Llodra advanced to the second round by virtue of his four-sets dismissal of Belgium's Steve Darcis. The 33-year-old Frenchman will attempt to win his 10th main-draw match of the season.

I hope monfils is not too pooped out. He will have to be fetching a lot today.

Fedkovic23 , 5/29/13 12:33 AM

Well thats obviously wrong. Its monfils who will have to be fetching a lot today. Fedkovic your lack of tennis knowledge is hilarious.

Scrotracker , 5/29/13 12:37 AM

"Well thats obviously wrong. Its monfils who will have to be fetching a lot today."

That is kind of what Fedkovic said.....

tj600 , 5/29/13 2:02 AM

Conspirator aka Scrotracker aka (insert some idiotic name here) has gotten confused with so many different names the brain has gotten crossed up and can't process information normally. It's just plain stupid to be so childish. Obviously Fedkovic was correct.

chr18 , 5/29/13 3:17 AM

The other name to insert is Djokogod. this woman is a nutcase. I agree she is confused, which Ive been saying for quite some time. she uses the same words e.g., racist comments, and using up valuable space, plus gives links to some dirty websites, as conspirator and willmw uses. She'snot childish, she's a filthy pervert. Notice, not one of her gang calls her out, but they find her comments and use of myscreen name (a part of the male anatomy) to be humorous. I think she is very needy.

scoretracker , 5/29/13 6:52 AM

Apparently Gulbis has said, in interview, that "Andy/Rad?fed/Nole are "boring" players. OMG u've just gotta love the sheer outrageousness of the guy :)
This is VERY second hand folks, so don't shoot the messenger if it comes about he didn't...;) That's the trouble with the net, rumours just flyyyyyyy

deuce , 5/29/13 8:19 AM

LOL @ Constipator/SCROTUM/DjokOGod/Jean

Made an el buffoon out of yourself, much like Rafa with his banana choking and cramping like a pansy in front of everyone.

These 2 Zare/constipator have shown us what the IQ levels of rafatards are - below zero!

Fedkovic23 , 5/29/13 9:19 AM

I've read the interview in L'Equipe deuce 5/29/13 8:19 AM.
If it were anohter person I'd be more reluctant to believe it but in Gulbis's case I think he might just have said it, lol.
I wish he'd get in the top 10 soon

Shireling , 5/29/13 1:35 PM

I'm a little conflicted about Gulbis. I like his game, I think he has the game to walk the talk. And on Court, he is professional and correct, well now at least. It's the off court nonsense I have a problem with, he just does not need to open his mouth imho!

I wish he would just shut up and get his business done on court because, unlike some loud mouths, I think he has something to show..............

rafaisthebest , 5/29/13 1:42 PM

a stage hand criticizing the prima donnas...

phoenix , 5/29/13 1:44 PM

@Shireling, cheers. In a way I like this arrogance it's so completely against this modern, airbrushed, PR pleasing, "OOh everyone is simply brilliant, darling." But as RITB says, all very well, but time to put your money where your mouth is.
@phoenix, well put and will remain so till he gets to top 4, I'd say. Long way to go.
Meanwhile, Go Gael :)

deuce , 5/29/13 2:12 PM

I'm backing Gulbis in this match. While La Monf has a more pleasant personality, I cannot stand his on court jester personality. Until he shows he is taking his craft seriously I cannot bring myself to back him on court............

At least Gulbis is starting to show that he is taking his on court business seriously...

rafaisthebest , 5/29/13 2:25 PM

hear hear deuce
I don't think Gulbis is ever going to get to top 4, let's start with top 10 first.

Shireling , 5/29/13 2:27 PM

Gulbis at his best can beat Fed if he can get past Monfils and Ferru.

Good for a few guys like him and Jerzy to speak their minds. A bit of trash talk is good to see (as long as there is something creative to say).

Conspirator , 5/29/13 2:31 PM

I don't know @Conspirator, I just feel this year Ferru has a chance. I feel Ferru can trouble Fed's troublesome back. I feel Fed can deal with Gulbis's bombs. Fed does not appear to have much trouble neutralising big serves..

rafaisthebest , 5/29/13 2:47 PM

rafaisthebest, 5/29/13 2:25 PM

I think Gael has at last toned down his more excessive antics. I was surprised by the improvement in the last few matches of his that I've seen. However, I doubt he will get the better of the new improved version of Gulbis. But I would like it if he did - for more reason than one!

ed251137 , 5/29/13 3:07 PM

Agree with ed. When Gael beat Big Bird there was a complete lack of "clowning." Of course, he responds to the crowd, but that's quite different.
Courier said Gael had the "most perfect athletic build" of all the players btw.

deuce , 5/29/13 3:11 PM

@deuce, having said that, i'm still an admirer of Gulbis untapped talent and potential notwithstanding. So, Go Ernest :-)

phoenix , 5/29/13 3:18 PM

"Courier said Gael had the "most perfect athletic build" of all the players btw."

What, with those stick legs? Gael has no calves! I noticed he starts clutching his legs towards the tail end of long matches, could be those......ahem, not so developed jambes..

rafaisthebest , 5/29/13 3:21 PM

That's why I said "if".

Gulbis has beaten Fed in Rome including a breadstick so he has a decent shot at his best.

Conspirator , 5/29/13 3:28 PM

Now, don't tell me this is the same Ernests who turned up for Rafa at Rome. He seems.....deflated. In tell you, players, especially the ones with a little ambition, see Rafa across the net and it's like a dose of speed for them!

rafaisthebest , 5/29/13 3:28 PM

I also feel that Ferrer is beaten even before he hits the first ball vs Fed.

Conspirator , 5/29/13 3:30 PM

Yes, our Ferru is a little "tender" between the ears. Notice how he crumbles in final sets against Rafa.....

rafaisthebest , 5/29/13 3:33 PM

I agree with Conspirator. Gulbis has a better chance of beating federer than ferrer IMO. In fact, if you asked federer who he would rather face I am sure he would say Ferrer.

tj600 , 5/29/13 3:33 PM

...but this time, i feel that Ferru will win against Fed...

phoenix , 5/29/13 3:35 PM

... several of us have the same feeling phoenix but one match at a time.. I thought Carreno-Bustas was going to trouble Fed a bit more and look, Fed was rock solid.

Shireling , 5/29/13 3:41 PM

yes Shireling, one match at a time...besides, a Rafa-Ferru finals would not be as exciting, no? :-)

phoenix , 5/29/13 3:46 PM

Now, I am not "feeling" La Monf's game plan here. He needs to back up that good serve with some aggressive forehands. He is just bunting the ball in right now with those forehands, giving Ernie time to wind up his "take-off" forehands.....

rafaisthebest , 5/29/13 3:46 PM

Dont forget now, if Gulbis loses it wont be the better player who won.

Damn. Rain has stopped play.

ed251137 , 5/29/13 3:55 PM

Ooh tennis gods not favouring Gael- awful time to stop :(
RITB, yes agree, awful shot selection at times. Think he's coachless....however a coach never made much difference ;)
Oooer tie break....

deuce , 5/29/13 3:58 PM

Man down!

rafaisthebest , 5/29/13 4:01 PM

good breaker so far.

cherylmurray , 5/29/13 4:03 PM

Six slice a Ernie's DHBH, really, La Monf?

rafaisthebest , 5/29/13 4:04 PM

La Monf needs a coach, deucy, he really does. Those slice backhands were criminal.....

rafaisthebest , 5/29/13 4:08 PM

First blood to Gulbis. Think he's gonna win, looks more determined.
Anyone else here think Monfils is hauntingly beautiful? Sighs....

deuce , 5/29/13 4:09 PM

Great from Gulbis! Some enormous backhands there.

tj600 , 5/29/13 4:11 PM

Hi cheryl, nice to have your company :) But WTH time is it in your neck of the woods???

deuce , 5/29/13 4:11 PM

Agree, deucy, about your projected winner.......

rafaisthebest , 5/29/13 4:12 PM

But not about how beautiful Gael is?????????? Mon dieu, woman, have u no eyes in your head....;)

deuce , 5/29/13 4:15 PM

I just love the way Gulbi plays...Monf only keeps the ball in and runs like hell, but Gulbi is teaching him a lesson...I can't help it but adore Gulbis...he is such a refreshing unorthodox creature in tennis...:)

natashao , 5/29/13 4:16 PM

Gulbis and Monfils are free spirits. Some players cannot be tamed and disciplined - that is what makes them special.

To free spirits and players with personalities, may they continue to thrive in tennis and life!

JamesDjokovicFan , 5/29/13 4:17 PM

huge tennis from Gulbis in the tiebreaker (aside from two loose forehands)

RickyDimon , 5/29/13 4:20 PM

Mon dieu again.....agreeing with JDF, or are you reasonable Nole fan? Just can't keep up these days.....another sigh...

deuce , 5/29/13 4:20 PM

Just trying to keep the discussion on topic, deucy, on topic..............

Quite right @natashao, about La Monf just bunting the ball in, not gonna cut it against Ernie. He is powerfully built (except those puny calves) so don't understand why he is not unleashing hell on Ernie.........

rafaisthebest , 5/29/13 4:21 PM

Something is up with Gael. This is not his normal demeanor on court.

ed251137 , 5/29/13 4:24 PM

I would love to see Gulbis play mixed doubles with Marion Bartoli.............

rafaisthebest , 5/29/13 4:24 PM

@RITB..Lol. OK back to tennis...Gael has a heck of a forehand, seldom seen, why?
He has huge upper body, so much power there, as u say. Oops just stopping myself going off topic....

deuce , 5/29/13 4:25 PM

RT @SteveTignor: "Tennis Channel, now is the time to show Gulbis-Monfils, not a Federer quote from three days ago. #rg13"

rafaisthebest , 5/29/13 4:27 PM

@ed He's very subdued and so is the crowd. Probably knackered after beating Berd and having so much time off with injury.

deuce , 5/29/13 4:28 PM

Ernie contstructs his points well. Gael lacks all subtlety and his winning most of his points from Ernie's errors.

ed251137 , 5/29/13 4:44 PM

Break point in sight for the set. Now the crowd have woken up.

ed251137 , 5/29/13 4:46 PM

it looks like it's gonna be a LONG day...

natashao , 5/29/13 4:48 PM

Didn't see that coming, La Monf grabs a set........

rafaisthebest , 5/29/13 4:48 PM

There u go Gulbis goes all Gulbis and it's one set each!
Agree ed.

deuce , 5/29/13 4:48 PM

the best player just lost the 2nd set

Shireling , 5/29/13 4:50 PM

Looks like Benneteau wants another meeting with Fed, he is currently 2 sets up in his match...........

rafaisthebest , 5/29/13 4:50 PM

^^^^ROFL. Shades of WTF - was it 2009?

ed251137 , 5/29/13 4:58 PM

Hope the meeting takes place, will be interesting to see who the crowd roots for!

rafaisthebest , 5/29/13 5:00 PM

My bad. It was Paris Masters in 2009

ed251137 , 5/29/13 5:02 PM

Best point I've see La Monf construct, ending with a DTL backhand..........

rafaisthebest , 5/29/13 5:04 PM

Monfils picking up his game. Ernie still somewhat flat.

ed251137 , 5/29/13 5:07 PM

Commies: "when Ernie makes a mistake, he backs it up with a few more"!

rafaisthebest , 5/29/13 5:11 PM

Keep this up Gael. You're doing a grand job.

To digress a moment. Why is it so many of the French players have grown beards?
Simon is the latest to sport one.

ed251137 , 5/29/13 5:17 PM

@5:11 PM

That's funny, Who said it - most of them are pretty devoid of humour.

ed251137 , 5/29/13 5:20 PM

RT @SteveTignor: "Eurosport commentator on Gulbis: "He's found the self-destruct button and keeps pushing it." Monfils up 5-2 in third. #rg13"

rafaisthebest , 5/29/13 5:21 PM

Now La Monf gets hold of the self-destruct button.........

rafaisthebest , 5/29/13 5:26 PM

How could Gael throw that MP away like that. It will serve as a wake up call for Gulbis.

ed251137 , 5/29/13 5:26 PM

Another bad. I meant Set Point not Match point. Obviously. But if he had managed to win the 3rd set then he would have been well on the way to winning the match the way Gulbis is playing.

ed251137 , 5/29/13 5:31 PM

This is tennis, folks.

cherylmurray , 5/29/13 5:37 PM

Missing that set point let Ernie out of jail and will cost him the match.

ed251137 , 5/29/13 5:39 PM

That was such a foolish decision by Monfils. I don't know for certain that it will cost him the match, but if it does, he has nobody to blame but himself.

cherylmurray , 5/29/13 5:41 PM

RickyDimon , 5/29/13 5:42 PM

OK. Game On now.

ed251137 , 5/29/13 5:53 PM

La Monf now leads 2 sets to 1........

rafaisthebest , 5/29/13 5:53 PM

what a match...Gulbi in self-destruction mode again...great game by Monf though...amusing to watch...

natashao , 5/29/13 5:55 PM

La Monf, take a bow, son.

rafaisthebest , 5/29/13 5:57 PM

Benny's having second thoughts about a meeting with Fed, Fed does not like missing appointments and is steamrolling over Somdev.............

rafaisthebest , 5/29/13 6:00 PM

OMG Gulbis shows us exactly why he is NOT in top 10- so horribly erratic :(
@ed, such a shame, adorable Simon no longer looks 12 years old...

deuce , 5/29/13 6:08 PM

The better player is losing............

rafaisthebest , 5/29/13 6:15 PM

Erractic is an understatement. So is Gulbis, They are taking it in turns.

ed251137 , 5/29/13 6:19 PM

Hard to believe this is the same guy who gave us all kittens when he played Rafa.

ed251137 , 5/29/13 6:22 PM

Any bets how many MPs Gael can blow in the next game?

ed251137 , 5/29/13 6:24 PM

Chapeau Gael. I take back my last comment

ed251137 , 5/29/13 6:27 PM

GSM, La Monf

rafaisthebest , 5/29/13 6:28 PM

I wonder what Gulbis will have to say after this match :-D

ed251137 , 5/29/13 6:31 PM

Steve Tignor ?@SteveTignor 2h
Johnny Mac touting Gulbis/Monfils: As far as head cases go, "this is the cream of the crop right here." #rg13

Why he'll never be top player.

Conspirator , 5/29/13 6:31 PM

Happy to be wrong:)
Thanks Ernst :)
Go Gael. Yay!

deuce , 5/29/13 6:44 PM

the kid in his head not yet ready to grow up...most likely he never will be...

But great win for Monf! Big effort, deserved the win..

natashao , 5/29/13 6:54 PM

Great match. Too bad, Iron Man 2 Gulbis wasn't interested in playing a best of 5. Cannot blame him. Clay is for lesser mortals. The tennis worldcup - Wimbledon begins next month.

Fedkovic23 , 5/29/13 7:04 PM

Fedkovic, If clay is for lesser mortals then why is it the slam that Federer found hardest to win and has repeatedly said that his sole title at RG in 2009 was the best moment of his career? Seems odd, no?

Scrotracker , 5/29/13 7:16 PM

RT @SI_BTBaseline: "Gulbis says he needs to work on fitness. Legs got heavy in the 4th set. Doesn't care if match was entertaining. Just wanted the win. #RG13'

rafaisthebest , 5/29/13 7:35 PM

I just saw the score of this match. From reading the comments it sounds like this was up and down and all over the place. Two head cases! I will definitely be watching if there is a replay later on the tennis channel. I thought Monfils would be too tired after his match with Berdy. Sometimes when you take out a top player, there's nothing left for the next match.

I think Gulbis can find a way to lose just about any time. I wonder if he's going to come up with his usual - I played better and should have won - nonsense in his post match press conference.

Nativenewyorker , 5/29/13 8:20 PM

@7:04 PM..................That match cannot be described as 'great'.

NNY: Knowing the final score - which to be honest was not predictable - I doubt there is much to be gained from watching the replay unless you are a Monfils fan, Even the crowd failed to be involved until towards the end of the third set.

ed251137 , 5/29/13 8:46 PM

So I shouldn't hold my breath waiting for the replay? Okay! I am not a Monfils fan. He can be incredibly entertaining but can also be quite frustrating to watch. The way he used to throw himself all over the court, risking his body and those knees was just reckless. Sometimes I think he just wants to have fun and not be serious.

However, it is nice to see him back. I thought that Gulbis would win this one, but you can never count on him to play consistently well. He has this marvelous way of sself-destructing over and over.
