    5/27/13 12:05 AM | Kelli DeMario
Berdych meets Monfils in first round Fifth seed Tomas Berdych is set to take on France's Gael Monfils in first-round play on Monday. The Czech is joined by fellow seed Nicolas Almagro, who faces Austria's Andreas Haider-Maurer.

    (5) Tomas Berdych vs. Gael Monfils

World No. 6 Tomas Berdych holds a 3-0 series lead against former world No. 7 Gael Monfils. The two last met at the 2012 Masters 1000 Madrid, where the Czech won a round of 16 match in straight sets.

Berdych is back on court following a final four finish at the Masters 1000 Rome (lost to Nadal). The 27-year-old will be looking to record his 30th victory of the season.

Monfils enters into the French Open with momentum after reaching the final in Nice (lost to Montanes). The 26-year-old is a former semifinalist at the French Open, having made the last four in 2008.

    (11) Nicolas Almagro vs. Andreas Haider-Maurer

World No. 13 Nicolas Almagro looks to regroup after suffering a first-round loss to France's Julien Benneteau in Rome. The 11th seed will be making his 10th appearance at the French Open, where he reached the last eight in 2008, 2010 and 2012.

World No. 105 Andreas Haider-Maurer is set to make his 2013 main-draw debut on Monday. The 26-year-old Austrian is seeking his first French Open win since 2011.

Berdy in trouble. Down a set and a break to LeMonf.

Come on Gael :)

Monfils playing consistent tennis; defending and serving well. Now 2-0 up.
Berdych missing too many easy shots. But with Monfils you never know; he may become very passive for a long period during the match and this can prove to be costly against top players.

Berdy up a double break. LeMonf the underdog again.

Winner plays the toughest unseeded out (in his own humble opinion).

Oops. Make that a single break.

Berdych will bow out to monfils --the crowd favourite --- making the ferrer quarter easier

Monfils breaks back

5 all. Game on. Come on!

deuce , 5/27/13 6:46 PM

Is that the same Berdych who beat Novak last week?!!!

Monalysa , 5/27/13 6:48 PM

isfand , 5/27/13 6:57 PM

Can't wait for Berdych to shush the crowd when this is all over?

Berdych let the crowd get to him!!!! Where did he get off the train last year?

Monalysa , 5/27/13 8:46 PM

Allez Monfils! :) Hooray :)
Terrific roller coaster.

deuce , 5/27/13 8:50 PM

Oh well, Muzza has just gained himself a grass practice partner.....

rafaisthebest , 5/27/13 8:51 PM

Lol RITB was just thinking this is the downside of Bird's loss- gets more practise on grass...:(

deuce , 5/27/13 8:55 PM

Berdy won't be in Fed's half on the green stuff, that's for sure, nor Rafa for that matter.

I have been following the scoreline on this match! I guess it lived up to its billing. I can only hope to see it replayed later on the tennis channel. So is Monfils back? I can only imagine what the crowd was like! I guess it did get to Berdy.

So we have our first upset of the tournament.

Nativenewyorker , 5/27/13 9:05 PM

@NNY
It was a terrific match but Berd's game was off I thought, he was shanking a lot of forehands and Monfils managed to hang in there physically. Surprising really, as he's had so much time off. It was on a knife edge in the fifth but the crowd certainly lifted Gael in the last two games.
Cheers Conspirator.....in Andy's half then...:(

deuce , 5/27/13 9:22 PM

deuce,

Thanks for the info. This was targeted as one to watch. I didn't think Monfils would be able to hang in physically after being off for so long.

That French crowd! Yikes!

Nativenewyorker , 5/27/13 9:44 PM

monfils did it as predicted

isfand , 5/27/13 11:12 PM

predicted by whom?

I'm finally able to watch some of LaMonf/Berdych match on ESPN2 which is being shown at the moment. I'm somewhat surprised and at the same time not, coz Tomas has been playing a lot of tennis over the past months, and LaMonf as been resting. This was a big scalp for LaMonf which I hope that La Monf will use to ride the tidal wave to possibly reach the QFs and/or SFs. If he can put his clowning around match as the much needed incentive/confidence to go deeper at RG.

I also watched some of Nadal/Brands and all I can say is that some fans of the defending champ's fans should hold back on being so cocksure that he'll win the whole thing. We'll see ...................

fans have fans too?
