  • Monaco, Nieminen battle in Dusseldorf final

    5/25/13 1:39 AM | Kelli DeMario
Monaco, Nieminen battle in Dusseldorf final Third seed Juan Monaco looks to win his first title of the season at the Power Horse Cup, as he takes on fellow seed Jarkko Nieminen. The players are scheduled to contest their fourth career meeting Saturday afternoon.

World No. 19 Juan Monaco trails world No. 42 Jarkko Nieminen 2-1 in the series. The Argentine won their only clay-court meeting in 2010, when the two met at the Masters 1000 Monte Carlo.

Monaco advanced to the final match of the tournament with a straight-set ousting of countryman Guido Pella. The 29-year-old secured a semifinal victory in an hour and 57 minutes, 6-4, 7-6(8). "(Saturday's final) will be a different match," Monaco explained. "Jarkko hits with a lot of spin, he plays from the baseline and doesn't make easy mistakes. You need good rhythm to beat him."

Monaco is seeking his eighth ATP World Tour title.

Nieminen is through to the championship final after holding on to defeat Igor Sijsling in three sets, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3. "It was quite a roller-coaster; up and down from both players," Nieminen said. "It was a crucial moment at 0-2, 15-40 (in the third set). I think that was half a match point. But, luckily I managed to play some of my best tennis of the day in that moment and won five games in a row.

Nieminen will attempt to win his third Tour title on Saturday.

"It will be a tough match again," Nieminen assessed. "I think tomorrow will be slow and heavy. The weather isn't getting much warmer. So I expect to play long rallies, especially against (Monaco). He doesn't give you anything for free and he's one of the best players on clay, so I really have to play a complete and solid match."
