• Federer faces Paire in Rome semi

    5/18/13 3:43 PM | Kelli DeMario
Federer faces Paire in Rome semi World No. 3 Roger Federer is back on court to face France's Benoit Paire for a place in the championship final. The winner moves on to meet either World No. 5 Rafael Nadal or World No. 6 Tomas Berdych for the title on Sunday.

World No. 3 Roger Federer is through to the final four in Rome after defeating Poland's Jerzy Janowicz late Friday. The Swiss veteran tallied 11 aces and a pair of service breaks en route to a 6-4, 7-6(2) victory.

“I knew it wasn't going to be another 6-1, 6-2 victory like the first two (matches). Those who thought that was going to be the case don't know anything about tennis,” Federer said.

“It was a tough match. Janowicz showed some great tennis. I think he's very talented and has clearly proved that in the past. Coming here, in front of a full stadium, he had nothing to lose. The way he came out and played I thought was impressive. He had break points early in the first set. He swung and hit everything to get the break in the second set. He should have got the set. Clearly, I can be very happy to win in straight sets tonight.”

Federer holds a 2-0 series edge against World No. 36 Benoit Paire, having won five of 5 sets contested against the Frenchman. Saturday signals their first match on clay.

Paire advanced to his first Masters 1000 semifinal with a 6-1, 6-0 drubbing of Spain's Marcel Granollers.

"I felt good on the court," Paire explained. "After I started with a couple of faults, I felt good on court and it was a perfect match. I am making the progress we want with my coach. When you see the match with Del Potro – it was the best match. And against Granollers, the same."

Before the familiar posters arrive here I give my take. Roger must win against BP. Not for anything but to avoid people accusing him of tanking the match to avoid Nadal. I read some poster in another site speculating Novak trying hard to avoid Rafa to rejuvinate and remain fresh for the Career Slam. What an idea?

Would love to see a Roger-Rafa final after a long time on Clay no matter which of the guys win.

BP may spoil the show if a sub par Roger turns up and self destructs with poor 1st strike and enormous shanks.

Fed has got his undershirt on...........

rafaisthebest , 5/18/13 8:13 PM

Stop mucking about Fed and just target his forehand...............Just remember, his forehand is as bad as your backhand under fire from a certain Mallorcan, if not worse.

rafaisthebest , 5/18/13 8:16 PM

things are getting interesting

rafaelo , 5/18/13 8:19 PM

And here they are!, vamos!

newfangkc , 5/18/13 8:20 PM

Is there anyone on tour with a worse forehand than Paire?

rafaisthebest , 5/18/13 8:30 PM

Bah. Three break points Fed!

xrf , 5/18/13 8:37 PM

Three brek points in three service games and zero aces against four is interesting!

newfangkc , 5/18/13 8:38 PM

Paire breaks. Is Fed trying to concoct a tank here????

rafaisthebest , 5/18/13 8:39 PM

As I predicted in my post above the tanking theorists are here!

newfangkc , 5/18/13 8:41 PM

No shanking allowed.................By Order!

nadline , 5/18/13 8:44 PM

Break back!

xrf , 5/18/13 8:44 PM

Put on your Knee Caps by request!

newfangkc , 5/18/13 8:47 PM

This is where Staff hand Benoit the memo reminding him who he's playing.........

rafaisthebest , 5/18/13 8:52 PM

Six service games without an ACE!

newfangkc , 5/18/13 8:52 PM

Paul Anacone looks like he's in tears.

nadline , 5/18/13 8:58 PM

What a crap tiebreak. Fed tried to lose it but Paire is that bad.

Conspirator , 5/18/13 9:04 PM

6 more games..........

Allez Fed!

rafaisthebest , 5/18/13 9:04 PM

That was close.
Paire already has 23 winners.

xrf , 5/18/13 9:04 PM

Much ado about nothing- the shanking king wins set #1 without an ace and tears from Anaconda!

newfangkc , 5/18/13 9:06 PM

If Fed plays like this tomorrow he will lose embarrassingly................

rafaisthebest , 5/18/13 9:07 PM

RITB..easy easy..lets see tomorrow

..Im not sure who is fav tomm by pundits..Im sure Rafa is though technically he shouldnt be as hes coming off a 7 month break..but the 5 titles will surely put him as a fav

sanju , 5/18/13 9:11 PM

He can still lose today. Look at his 1st sevice. Awaful.

newfangkc , 5/18/13 9:12 PM

So RITB undershirt means back issue u hinting at?

sanju , 5/18/13 9:13 PM

@sanju, undershirt means he's feeling cold...............age.

rafaisthebest , 5/18/13 9:15 PM

Who know to what hights he might climbe?
seventeen, 5/18/13 9:10 PM

Exactly. Who knows?

nadline , 5/18/13 9:16 PM

Nah it is all over for BP from now on, tired of monitoring slow moving score card on internet. Is this slow because it is being played on CLAY?

newfangkc , 5/18/13 9:17 PM

Who knows indeed, he might climb to 25............

rafaisthebest , 5/18/13 9:17 PM

Bad serving day.

xrf , 5/18/13 9:18 PM

Dead man walking.................

rafaisthebest , 5/18/13 9:19 PM

Dead man walking.................

rafaisthebest , 5/18/13 9:20 PM

Dad man walking on water-RITB!

newfangkc , 5/18/13 9:21 PM

rafaisthebest , 5/18/13 9:22 PM

First ace!

xrf , 5/18/13 9:27 PM

The drama seems to have no end. Escaping by the skin of his teeth. How long can the dud do that?

newfangkc , 5/18/13 9:28 PM

Paire can be proud, he acquitted himself well.............

rafaisthebest , 5/18/13 9:29 PM

This is almost over, Fed resigned to his fate..............

rafaisthebest , 5/18/13 9:31 PM

Bizare, can't remember a match when Fed served three DF and one ace!

newfangkc , 5/18/13 9:33 PM

Lets have some drama. Let FED lose his service game and have some fun.

newfangkc , 5/18/13 9:37 PM

So it's to be a Fed-Rafa final then. Been a while.

cherylmurray , 5/18/13 9:41 PM

Proposal disposed. Posters go home and reassemble Sunday evening recharged with venom refilled. Good Night!

newfangkc , 5/18/13 9:41 PM

Fed tried but Paire just wouldn't take it.

xrf , 5/18/13 9:45 PM
