• Federer takes on Janowicz in Rome quarterfinals

    5/17/13 6:37 AM | Ricky Dimon
Federer takes on Janowicz in Rome quarterfinals Roger Federer has made smooth progress through the Rome draw en route to the quarterfinals. Up next for Federer on Friday is Jerzy Janowicz.

Roger Federer and Jerzy Janowicz will be going head-to-head for the first time in their careers when they meet in the quarterfinals of the Internazionali BNL d'Italia on Friday night.

Both players are still on course for their best result of the season this week. Federer, who is in search of his first 2013 title, reached semifinals at the Australian and in Dubai then took two months off after a quarterfinal loss to Rafael Nadal in Indian Wells. The third-ranked Swiss lost his second match in Madrid to Kei Nishikori, but he has been extremely impressive in Rome blowouts of Potito Starace and Gilles Simon.

Janowicz went into this week with a disappointing 10-9 record for his 2013 campaign, which included only two tournaments (the Australian Open and Marseille) in which he won back-to-back matches. The 24th-ranked Pole, though, is making an inspired run in Rome that evokes memories of his surprise runner-up finish last fall at the Paris Masters. Janowicz opened with a victory over Santiago Giraldo before taking out Top 10 Frenchmen Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Richard Gasquet.

Although his game is better suited for a fast hard court, Janowicz is showing an impressive ability to hit through clay while also showcasing his deft touch. The Federer of this season's first few months would be ripe for an upset, but the Federer of Rome may have too much game for his opponent. Look for the No. 2 seed to get through two entertaining sets.

Fed will waltz past Jerzy after a vintage Jerzy meltdown, and then face "Pizza" Paire in the semis. Who says being a tennis pro is taxing?

rafaisthebest , 5/17/13 8:51 AM

Will Fed get his own back for Janowicz calling him 'pompous'.?

nadline , 5/17/13 1:25 PM

I'm sure Fed will have a few scary moments before the inevitable happens and Jersy loses the plot. Jerzy needs some help with anger management if he is to make real progress.

Nadline: Haven't heard that one! When was it?

ed251137 , 5/17/13 2:19 PM

Ed, there is the link. He did not use the word 'pompous' but implied as much.

nadline , 5/17/13 2:58 PM

Like Berdych, Jerzy doesn't sugar coat things about Federina. Unlike other players, these two tell it like it is: Fed is selfish, vain, self absorbed, materialistic, you name it! More players with a spine are speaking up.

jean , 5/17/13 4:02 PM

Well, as for me, I much rather they speak up with their Rafa always does!!!!

Monalysa , 5/17/13 4:06 PM

I wonder how one speaks about unfair payment using a racket!!!!

jean , 5/17/13 4:29 PM

In fact Rafa also called out Fed for non support - with his mouth and not racket (and later apologized for it) so Rafa doesn't ALWAYS speak with his racket!!!

jean , 5/17/13 4:31 PM

Nadal "Sampras v Ivanisevic match, or one between those kind of players, is not enjoyable, It's not really tennis, it is a few swings of the racquet. For me, in the past it was just serve, serve, serve."

selfish arrogant mug.

rogervic , 5/17/13 6:14 PM

"Players don't miss Nadal." Davydenko.

Question: Is Nadal?s injury the result of a long, tennis season every year? Is it a case of too much of tennis?

Answer: No, no, no. Everybody gets injured. Everybody has time off after injury. It depends what kind of injury you have. It?s not a players? problem. It is a problem from the physio(s). You should have private physios check (on) you and do the best to help you hold the level you play at on the Tour. No matter how many tournaments you play, how many matches you play.

Question: Do you think the men?s Tour is going to miss Nadal?

Answer: Me? No! I don?t think so much about that (Nadal?s). For sure he will come back for the clay court season. And then he will try to win everything he can. Nadal is Nadal. The fans may miss him but not the players (smiles). injury-free-run.html

rogervic , 5/17/13 6:26 PM

good luck Roger .

rogervic , 5/17/13 6:28 PM

Watch out Rog. Unlike the rest, Jerzy doesn't sugarcoat things and has a spine. He may even how-many-times you in the match.

xrf , 5/17/13 6:40 PM

Roger is the favorite player whom a casual tennis fan with no depth chooses.

Roger wear his own large gaudy RF initials all over socks, shoes, hat, shirts everywhere.

smug, arrogant selfish self centerd no class

hawkeye , 5/17/13 7:38 PM

Janowicz know punchbag roger. He say:

"Federer instead is full of himself, he has something not natural. It?s hard to feel him like a integral part of all of us.?

smug hair cheater

hawkeye , 5/17/13 7:41 PM

Now, let's see if Roger wants his 20th loss.

Conspirator , 5/17/13 7:51 PM

rogervic, Davydenko went on to say the players didn't miss Nadal because no one wants to play him in the first round.

deama , 5/17/13 8:38 PM

What time is this match, man?!!!!

Monalysa , 5/17/13 10:52 PM

^^ haircut is delaying the match

chlorostoma , 5/17/13 11:21 PM

I must say...I prefer his hair a bit longer....

cherylmurray , 5/17/13 11:47 PM

Janowicz trying to choke away the second set here....horrid double fault...

cherylmurray , 5/17/13 11:50 PM

break back, Rogerer.

cherylmurray , 5/17/13 11:52 PM

Koenig is getting on my nerves even more than usual. Very rowdy crowd mostly cheering for Federer which I think is unsettling Jerzy.

He has started double faulting and Federer has now broken back. Curtains for Jerzy.

ed251137 , 5/17/13 11:55 PM

Janowicz trying to hang in there. Rogi all over that forehand.

cherylmurray , 5/18/13 12:02 AM

No TV coverage or streaming. Followed on Net. It was not an easy match for Roger it seems. Good for a first look of the Maestro by an upcoming guy. Some lousy hateful posters are always spoiling the space here.

newfangkc , 5/18/13 12:17 AM

haircut is delaying the match

chlorostoma , 5/17/13 11:21 PM

Better than to be delayed by butt picking.

KMA , 5/18/13 12:29 AM

So how about your prediction about Djoker beating Rafa in the semis? Not gonna happen now! That's why you should maybe keep your big mouth shut before making your prediction!

rogervic , 5/18/13 12:43 AM

Janowicz is arrogant jerk.

Smug arrogant mug.

rogervic , 5/18/13 12:46 AM

Davydanko hate Nadal ,

And, Robin?

rogervic , 5/18/13 12:51 AM

Selfish two-years-ranking.

rogervic , 5/18/13 1:21 AM

totally agree with you pinkeye. Jankowicz doesn't like Roger...must be Roger's fault

ts38 , 5/18/13 1:30 AM

yeah, 8 times won. Roger had won the award six straight years. (voted by ATP players)

Janowicz is smug arrogant jerk.

rogervic , 5/18/13 1:45 AM

congrats Roger.

rogervic , 5/18/13 5:58 AM

Paire continued his dream run in Rome with a quarterfinal victory over Spain's Marcel Granollers.

The 24-year-old needed less than an hour

6-1 6-0

rogervic , 5/18/13 5:09 PM

buttdull is a priceless word to describe the entire personality of the guy. probably the dullest guy on the tour. Even davydenko has more personality than this guy. Then again, when you are so controlled by a dominating personality like uncle toni, it is not really surprising. Uncle Toni - now that guy has got a presence.

Federer and Janowicz really lit up the court yesterday - they were firing away at each other and the array of shot-making they produced in one match is more than what some one-dimensional players generate in their entire career. JJ would have won atleast a wimbledon/USopen/AO if the ATP hadn't slowed down the conditions like they have. I hope he doesn't go the tsonga/berdych way and lands some slam titles.

Conspirator , 5/18/13 6:12 PM

lol conspirator.

HOW ARE YOU FEDFARTS? Pray hard for Roger to win his semis, otherwise his fans will be tortured again by constant jeers of being scared to face Rafa. hahahahaha

Raindrops , 5/18/13 6:20 PM

Rafatards upto their predictable gloating. As usual, get walloped black and blue by rosol, dodig and mayer once grass/hardcourts begin.

Fedkovic23 , 5/18/13 6:30 PM

Fedoshit.. Sour.. Bitter.. Coward.. Crybaby..

tettylds , 5/18/13 6:44 PM

Federer20, 5/18/13 6:30 PM

Conspirator , 5/18/13 6:52 PM

Fedkovic24 would be more apt from tomorrow!! Number 24 coming up!!
