• Djokovic takes on Dolgopolov for Rome quarters

    5/16/13 4:03 AM | Cheryl Murray
Djokovic takes on Dolgopolov for Rome quarters World No. 1 Novak Djokovic will do battle with Alexandr Dolgopolov, who earned his spot in the third round on a walkover.

Top seed Novak Djokovic was ousted in his first match at the Madrid Masters, due in part to a bum ankle the Serb picked up a month ago in a Davis Cup win over the Americans.

Djokovic says the ankle is no longer giving him problems, and his easy second round win over Albert Montanes seems to point to a Djokovic on the mend.

Alexandr Dolgopolov of the Ukraine could be a much tougher test than the Spanish qualifier, however. Dolgopolov has something of a history of inconsistent results, but when he's playing well, he is a legitimate threat to anyone he's playing.

Their last meeting also came on clay, last year at the Monte Carlo Masters. Dolgopolov took a set before Djokovic prevailed in three.

Prediction - Djokovic in two entertaining sets.

Dolgopolov playing some of the worst tennis of the year. Cannot believe he's in the top 30, playing like he's 100+.

Terrible from Dolgo. He's just misfiring all over the place, though this last game was pretty good.

Nole hasn't had to do anything but keep the ball in play.

cherylmurray , 5/16/13 1:31 PM

And just as we say that, Dolgo starts to wake up....

cherylmurray , 5/16/13 1:36 PM

nole's playing some real good tennis. hard to see him not winning this tournament if he keeps this up!

No1vak! King of Tennis.

novakisthebest , 5/16/13 1:38 PM

^^^ LOL Deluded.

willmw101 , 5/16/13 1:41 PM

Djokovic is moving and hitting the ball really well. He has a shot at winning this tournament for sure.

tj600 , 5/16/13 1:45 PM

Dolgo is turning every potential winner to an UE. Still he's managed to win 5 games.

nadline , 5/16/13 1:46 PM

Of course he has a shot of winning tournament but for novakisthebest to imply that his form in this match is particularly relevant with regard to the form he'll need to win in the final/semi final is laughable. Dolgopolov lost that match far mor than djokovic won it.

willmw101 , 5/16/13 1:52 PM

Dolgopolov should have improved by now.He simply cannot concentrate for more than 3 minutes at a time.

stratocast51 , 5/16/13 2:19 PM

^^ it seems so, stratocast. It's disappointing that he gets deflated so easily. He needs WAY more resilience if he wants to make a mark.

cherylmurray , 5/16/13 2:24 PM

Another match practice session for Novak!!!

Monalysa , 5/16/13 2:28 PM

Dolgo has a chronic condition though doesn't he? Must be very difficult to cope with that AND be fit enough to play pro tennis.

deuce , 5/16/13 2:30 PM

what condition are you referring to deuce ?

Shireling , 5/16/13 2:35 PM

oh, just saw it in another thread. Gilberts syndrome which causes exhaustion.. unlucky, he should play snooker or sthg else

Shireling , 5/16/13 2:54 PM

Oh, I didn't know Dolgo suffers from a chronic condition :(. How unfortunate :(. I like his unconventional style of play.

danica , 5/16/13 6:06 PM

Ofcourse, Dolgopolov lost this match, just like rafa lost the Monte Carlo final. Atleast djokovic didn't get out-hit 50 to 10 in the winners department. Now, that is a guy who hasn't won the match, but his opponent lost it. #GulbisTheWinner

JamesDjokovicFan , 5/16/13 7:43 PM

Well JamesFedererFan (aka Fedkovic23), by that "reasoning", Fed must have a winning h2h vs Rafa.

As a Fed troll, must hurt watching Rafa win so much, no?

Conspirator , 5/16/13 7:55 PM

And why is Nishitomic23 talking about Rafa's match on a Djokovic thread? Tells you all you need to know about what exercises these guys' minds. They are terrified of Rafa............

So Gulbis won by losing? No surprises, to them the earth is also flat..............

rafaisthebest , 5/16/13 8:10 PM

Terrible from Dolgo. He's just misfiring all over the place, though this last game was pretty good.

Nole hasn't had to do anything but keep the ball in play.

cherryl, i see we can expect one blog article on nole coming up, right?

rfzr , 5/16/13 8:22 PM

JamesDjokovicFan - everyone in the tennisworld knows the truth. Gulbis lost the match, really. Even the commentators acknowledged that. The match was on his racquet. Hope Gulbis cares enough to take tennis seriously.

No-1-le for RG!

novakisthebest , 5/16/13 9:01 PM

Funny, Fed also said the match was on his racket when he was beaten by Rafa at RG......can't remember when that was, it's been so many times.....
