• Tsonga takes on Janowicz at Rome Masters

    5/14/13 8:41 PM | Ricky Dimon
Tsonga takes on Janowicz at Rome Masters Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will make his 2013 Rome debut on Wednesday. Up first for the Frenchman is a big-hitting showdown with Jerzy Janowicz.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Jerzy Janowicz will be going head-to-head for the first time in their careers when they collide in round two of the Internazionali BNL d'Italia on Wednrsday afternoon.

Tsonga does not have any particularly memorable wins in 2013 (although he came back from the brink of defeat twice en route to the Marseille title), but he has been extremely consistent. The eighth-ranked Frenchman has quarterfinal results from the Australian Open, Indian Wells, and Madrid, plus an additional semifinal in Monte-Carlo. Tsonga is 20-7 for the season, including 7-2 on clay.

Janowicz is not quite up to a ranking that will seed him at smaller Masters events, so he had to contest a first-round match on Monday. The 22-year-old Pole got past Santiago Giraldo 7-5, 6-2 to improve his record for the season to a modest 11-9. Janowicz is coming off a second-round showing in Madrid, where he beat Sam Querrey then lost to Tomas Berdych in three sets.

This huge-hitting matchup would undoubtedly feature very few breaks of serve on an indoor hard court or any kind of fast surface. On clay, at least a couple of service donations can be expected. Tsonga's return is normally the weak point of his game, but he is playing with confidence right now and all aspects of his arsenal are working.

Based on current form and more experience on this surface, Tsonga in two close sets is the pick.

Janowicz's interview

nadline , 5/15/13 12:44 PM

That was a neat bit of shirt ripping by Janowicz after taking Tsonga out in straight sets - 64 76.

nadline , 5/15/13 1:39 PM

Another big hitter to shake things up on the clay?

chr18 , 5/15/13 1:44 PM

Next up for Jerzy boy is Reeshad. Hasn't he beaten Reeshad already before? I see him hitting Reeshad off the court...........

rafaisthebest , 5/15/13 1:48 PM

In other news Stan has withdrawn, out of gas I'm sure.

chr18 , 5/15/13 1:54 PM

Fed told him to sit this one out so he might become Swiss No. 1 again.

Conspirator , 5/15/13 2:02 PM

Personlly, I was not too impressed with Jerzey tearing his Jersey! I mean, plz wait till perhaps you get to at least the semis! What would you look like if you get blown off court by your next opponent..........which they almost always do!! Idoit!!!

Monalysa , 5/15/13 2:45 PM

Monalysa, beating a top 10 player means a lot to Janowicz, although I don't think I'd like to see shirt ripping catch on.

nadline , 5/15/13 3:02 PM

@ Nadline,

Oh, dont get me wrong...............I do ge that, but like you, dont want to see it become a trend!!!

Monalysa , 5/15/13 3:24 PM

if it does become a trend, then novak would become the trailblazer :D

tj600 , 5/15/13 3:29 PM

@ tj600,

I meant to say that you know, but i was a bit of a coward, I have ti admit, but glad you said it! This is why Novak's #1 status is sometimes diminished due to some of those very trends...hehe!!!

Monalysa , 5/15/13 3:57 PM

sorry for the comment but, for the sake of gender equality, I'd like to see some shirt-ripping in WTA too, no? :P

Shireling , 5/15/13 3:59 PM

^^It would not be reported on TT 'coz this is an ATP site only, hehehehe!

rafaisthebest , 5/15/13 4:22 PM

What does Jerzey want to be, a tennis player or striper?!!

Monalysa , 5/15/13 4:28 PM

ahahaha...I did not get to see the match, but your comments here tell the whole story...:))
