• Cilic takes on Golubev in Rome first round

    5/13/13 4:05 AM | Cheryl Murray
Cilic takes on Golubev in Rome first round Struggling No. 11 seed Marin Cilic will battle qualifier Andrey Golubev as he attempts to make something of what's been a disappointing clay swing.

Croatia's Marin Cilic has a good record this year, posting a 17-8 win-loss for 2013. But the Croat has struggled mightily on the European clay. He has only won 2 matches in 3 events, with opening round losses in both Munich and Madrid coming into Rome.

The upside for Cilic is that he should be well-rested while some of the other players in his quarter -- like Stanislas Wawrinka -- have made deep runs on European clay.

Cilic's first opponent is the Kazhakstani qualifier Andrey Golubev, who is ranked 195 in the world.

Golubev has played exactly 3 main tour matches so far this year. His ranking is now low enough that he is sometimes forced to qualify for Challenger events. This one should be winnable for Cilic.
