  • Nadal takes on surprise semifinalist Andujar in Madrid

    5/11/13 3:14 AM | Cheryl Murray
Nadal takes on surprise semifinalist Andujar in Madrid After a tricky quarterfinal against world No. 4 David Ferrer, Rafael Nadal will do battle with countryman and tournament wildcard Pablo Andujar.

Since his seven-month layoff due to knee problems, Rafael Nadal has played six tournaments (with Madrid number seven) and has played six finals. He lost his first tournament back to Horacio Zeballos and the Monte Carlo final to Novak Djokovic, but has collected four other titles, including a shocker in Indian Wells.

With the top 4 players out of the tournament, thanks to Tomas Berdych's defeat of Andy Murray on Friday afternoon, Nadal is the top seed remaining and will be the favorite to win the title.

But he will face Pablo Andujar, who actually seems to match up pretty well against the Clay King. They've met just once before in the second round of Roland Garros back in 2011. Nadal won in straight sets, but they weren't easy.

WIth Nadal slightly patchy with form this week, this could be more competitive than rankings suggest. Andujar is the world No. 114 and Nadal world No.5, but the match may well be entertaining for the crowd.

Prediction - Nadal in one tight set and one easy one.

Look at Rafa's reaction after winning! Woow! And people were all gloom and doom after yesterday...

Winners-UEs ratio: 22-12, now that is a ratio I associate with Rafa on clay, not yesterday's whatever.................

Cheryl, you were spot on. Rafa won in 2 ~ one easy set and one competitive one.

#Vamos Rafa

nadline , 5/11/13 5:09 PM

So RITB, are you at peace now? :-0

I didnt see the match but looks like it was a rocking 1st set and competitive 2nd one.

Yes Rafa is far more ripped and muscled now, his arms and his quadraceps..all look more ripped now. It wasnt so in Chile.

sanju , 5/11/13 5:10 PM

Totally @sanju. And more than that, trying to digest this unbelievable come back we are witnessing. Surely this must send shivers down the spines of his competitors? The guy was out of competition for 7 months! Who does that? Look at all the top guys struggling to be consistent................

rafaisthebest , 5/11/13 5:15 PM

Who do you prefer Rafa to meet in the final, Berdy or Wawa?

I'm torn. I'll say it's 50:50

nadline , 5/11/13 5:18 PM

............no wonder the Fedbots are having fits.

rafaisthebest , 5/11/13 5:19 PM

Berdy without a doubt....Rafa will eat him for breakfast, like he has done for the past 10+ occasions in a row. Wawrinka is having a rather good season, so really do not know what to expect of him..I will play it safe and opt for Berdych

atul1985 , 5/11/13 5:21 PM

Bravo Rafa! Way to go, champion!

Vamos Rafa!

natashao , 5/11/13 5:21 PM

I prefer that Berdy comes through. Berdy has a steady, solid game i.e. predictable, easier to read his patterns of play. Stan on the other hand has got this.......je ne sais quoi. He has a flamboyancy about him which makes him a little unpredictable, especially now he seems to be brimming with a new found confidence ever since he stretched Novak at Oz..........and he has a good clay game, much better than Berdy's.

rafaisthebest , 5/11/13 5:25 PM

Yeah, I tell you!! I was thinking. Rafa took 7 mths off and has reached the finals or better in all of the torunements he's entered!!! I mean, this feat will be used as a yardstick to measure come-backs im sure in the future, i mean its absolutely remarkable!! And as someone else said, the top four are struggling with "I dont know what" but Rafa is still here with all of his issues!!! Yet another bar set by Rafa and I know if he ever has another lay-off from injury in the future (hoping not!) that the expectations of him will be high!

1,2,3,4 are gone................5 is still here, and is not supposed to be his best tourney!!! One match at a time, Rafa!!!!

VAMOS!!!

Monalysa , 5/11/13 5:28 PM

Berdy will be tougher customer I think . Stan will be too tired, hes played a lot. Isnt he having some neck issues?

sanju , 5/11/13 5:30 PM

What time is the final tomorrow? Why ahvent they started the 2nd semi rightaway and are waiting for 1.5 hour to start. Ridiculous scheduling.

sanju , 5/11/13 5:31 PM

The final is at 4.00pm local time.

nadline , 5/11/13 5:36 PM

The second SF starts 2 hours after the first SF minimum. This is because they don't want someone who has finished his match in the middle of previous night to wait for the first match to finish. Before callling scheduling ridiculous, one needs to think a little more on the logic.

fedexal , 5/11/13 5:38 PM

Going little too far, if Rafa wins tomorrow and Rome, will he become number 4 ?

fedexal , 5/11/13 5:40 PM

It depends how well Ferrer performs. If Ferrer gets to the semis I think he still retains his #4 ranking...............i might be wrong.

Monalysa , 5/11/13 6:07 PM

@Monalysa If Rafa wins Rome, it automatically means he beats Ferrer in QF as Ferrer is scheduled to meet Rafa in Qf.

fedexal , 5/11/13 6:11 PM

Has Rafa got a new record with 7 consecutive finals?

nadline , 5/11/13 6:17 PM

nadline,
Did you watch the start of the Djoker's 2011? How soon we forget. He won 7 titles to start the year. Oh and 6 out of the 7 weren't on clay and one was a GS.

chr18 , 5/11/13 6:54 PM

@ fedexel,

Thanks for that! Good news then, if Rafa is able to get thru to Ferru then he might be seeded #4 then!

Monalysa , 5/11/13 7:10 PM

chr18, your post is a typical example of a delusional Fedfan post. 3 out of the 7 straight titles Novak won were on clay Belgrade, Madrid and Rome.

holdserve , 5/11/13 7:10 PM

chr18 has clay for brains........

rafaisthebest , 5/11/13 7:19 PM

In fact what was remarkable about Djokovic's 2011 run was that he had clay court and grass court titles.
In 2012, zilch . Only hard court titles. Hard court as we know is a cheap surface more suited to bots and clearly titles on it cannot have the value of titles won on clay or grass.

holdserve , 5/11/13 7:19 PM

haha chr19-10 got his head peppered again with axes and hammers LOL.

Raindrops , 5/11/13 7:30 PM

Yes chr18, but he wasn't coming back from injury, and only one of Nole's 7 wins was on clay.

nadline , 5/11/13 8:13 PM

So 3 of Nole's 7 successes were on clay, forgot about Madrid and Rome. I'm not interested in Nole's stats, my head is full of Rafa's successes.

nadline , 5/11/13 8:16 PM

Stan the Man it is tomorrow.....

rafaisthebest , 5/11/13 9:07 PM

No. of matches Stan has ever won against Rafa: zero.
No. of sets Stan has ever won against Rafa: zero.

I hope the trend continues tomorrow.

Vamos Rafa!

rafaisthebest , 5/11/13 9:11 PM

After Rafa won IW, we were told, oh but he did so without playing Murray or Djokovic and Federer was sick, asterix. Will the same nonsense be trotted out if he wins Madrid? Well, all I can say is: hey guys, stop losing early, it's rude to keep Rafa waiting in the final!

rafaisthebest , 5/11/13 9:21 PM

Let's compare the 7 tournaments:
Djoker : AO (a GS btw), Dubai (500), IW (1000), Miami (1000), Belgrade (250), Madrid (1000) and Rome (1000).
Nadal : r/u Chile (250), Brazil (250), Acapulco (500), IW (1000), r/u MC (1000), Barcelona (500) and ? Madrid (1000).
Surely even a Nadal fan can see that the Djoker's run was much much better. Oh and nadline they don't keep records for reaching consecutive finals when coming back from injury. There's only a record for reaching consecutive finals.

chr18 , 5/11/13 9:22 PM

No we remember the djoker's run, it was one of the greatest ever...but how stupid one needs to be to compare this run of rafa to that of djoker? this is the FINEST comeback ever perhaps..the guy was out for 7-8 months and he makes 7 strait finals !unearthly..we have federer missing a few weeks of tennis and blaming 'lack of match play' as the reason to losing in madrid and same for djo after losing to grigor...rafa was out for SEVEN months ! u wonder how human he is :O

and do not worry, rafa will add a GS to his comeback run in april's first week.just wait

vamosrafa , 5/11/13 9:27 PM

chr18, they never kept a record for reaching consecutive finals when coming back from a 7-month injury lay-off because nobody has ever reached consecutive finals after coming back from a 7-month injury lay-off. Now that it's been done, the record exists. A record can only exist AFTER it has been established, not before.....

Even YOU can work that out, no?

Numpty.

rafaisthebest , 5/11/13 9:29 PM

Find it on the ATP web site then if it's a record now. Besides a 7 month injury break. Um how many people would fall into such a narrow category? Let's face it: if Nadal had come back during the USO series like in 2009 or indoor season he wouldn't be making finals. He came back on back to back 250 clay tournaments. And it was nadline and holdserve who brought it up and actually tried to imply Nadal's run is more impressive. Coincidentally, besides the 81 clay win streak when has Nadal made so many consecutive finals? Only if they played on clay year round.

chr18 , 5/11/13 9:38 PM

YE should be on clay!

nadline , 5/11/13 9:42 PM

Don't worry chr18, Greg Sharko is no slouch, he'll have Rafa's record up on the ATP website in no time. If, but, whatever........just lump it, will ya?

rafaisthebest , 5/11/13 9:43 PM

I am so happy to see Rafa playing well today. The outcome was never in doubt, but somehow Rafa seems to get better when he is challenged the way he was by Ferrer. He is hitting the lines with that forehand now and the backhand slice has been working so well. Good serving and also ROS.

I am beyond proud of Rafa for getting to another final and especially at Madrid which has not been the easiest clay tournament for him. I don't care about records, I care about Rafa making an amazing comeback. There is no way to belittle or diminish what he has done.

What Rafa is doing now stands on its own and need not be compared to anything else. Maybe people can calm down now after seeing Rafa playing some great tennis.

So it will be Stan in the final tomorrow. The guy has given Rafa some trouble in the past. It's true that he has never beaten Rafa, but he's playing much better now. If he could beat Berdy, then he must be playing well. I think this will be a competitive match.

But for now I just want to enjoy the fact that Rafa is in another final!

Nativenewyorker , 5/11/13 9:49 PM

RT @Not only is Stan back in the top 10, but he's going to be the top Swiss in the ATP Race. By a considerable margin, it seems."

Stankovic looming................

rafaisthebest , 5/11/13 9:49 PM

don't call me crazy but I think Andujar, with good coaching, could be top 10 material.

Shireling , 5/11/13 10:22 PM

Andujar is a far better player than many top 30 players.

nadline , 5/11/13 10:47 PM

Since some of the Fed bots posing as Nole fans or joint fans of Fed and Nole brought up the question of authentic surfaces, I take it to its logical conclusion. Clay and grass are authentic surfaces. Hard court is a cheap substitute, a synthetic surface. If we look at the GS titles won on authentic surfaces by players who played in the open era ( all their titles may not have been won in the open era) then the Leader is Borg with 11. Rafa: 9, Fed : 8, Sampras: 7
As for the morons who claim the WTF is a slam, first it is not only not designated as a slam, it is not qualified to be one. First of all it is not best of 5. It is not even qualified to be Masters because the courts are not professionally maintained and the entry is restricted to just top 8 and follows the round robin format.
In fact the courts are laid just before the tournament. The rest of the year they are used for other purposes like music concerts. The event is just an exhibition showcasing the top 8. The points and money they get is the jam on their butter i.e. a bonus for consistent performance throughout the year.

holdserve , 5/11/13 11:56 PM

@holdserve,Also Nadal always fails at the WTF,that's why you don't like it.

stratocast51 , 5/12/13 4:31 AM

So now just coz Rafa made 7 straight finals, Fedbots are trying to denigrate his success by trying to bring Djokers 2011 run in the conversation..lol..

Well no one has forgotten Djokos 2011 run, it was amazing, but where is the comparison? He wasnt injured for 7 months and he wasnt on a comeback trail.

sanju , 5/12/13 4:50 AM

Ermmmmm........strato..........holdserve never said he didnt like WTF. He just imformed why it is NOT a GS or Masters tourney!!!

Monalysa , 5/12/13 4:53 AM

In 2011, Rafa was finalist or winner in indian wells, Miami, MC, Barcelona, Madrid, Rome, RG and Wimbledon consequetively

atul1985 , 5/12/13 6:54 AM

strato just because Rafa falls at WTF, it doesn't make that tournament a GS or a Masters. It is still an exhibition carrying points.

holdserve , 5/12/13 7:33 AM

strato, if it were a GS, Rafa would have won it. It is just not important enough for him. He has a bad foot and he needs to rest and heal for the next season.
Rafa has mastered all GS surfaces. Except Djokovic and Federer no one has a better record even on hard court slams among any of the players in Fed or Rafa's generation. And on top of it he has a winning record against Fed even on outdoor hard court.
He is second only to Fed in grass court expertize among all players of Fed and Rafa's generation. And don't forget he won his first grass slam by beating Fed.
Further after 2008, Fed has not beaten him on any GS surface.

holdserve , 5/12/13 7:43 AM

Hey chr18, this one is for you!:

RT @SharkoTennis: " .@RafaelNadal 1st player to begin season w/7 finals in a row since @DjokerNole in '11. 2nd time in Nadal career 7 straight finals ('11). "

Told you Greg Sharko would be onto Rafa's records stat! Now watch a NEW record established by Rafa in Rome!!!!

Vamos!!

rafaisthebest , 5/12/13 8:26 AM

Actually, Rafa has made a few WTF finals and he has not played all of then even though he's always qualified.

Rafa's successes since his comeback is just too amazing. It is stranger than fiction.

#Come kid

nadline , 5/12/13 11:36 AM

^^^Rafa's success since his comeback IS..............

#comeback kid

nadline , 5/12/13 11:37 AM

And he is not yet at 100%, yet collecting tournament trophies like there is no tomorrow! I expect him to peak at the Australian Open...............

#Shivers

rafaisthebest , 5/12/13 11:46 AM

So that old chestnut about WTF raises its head again. Only Fedups claim that it is the equivalent (or more) of the Slam and even better than winning an Olympic Gold in singles. We all know why. lol.

I agree with Holdserve's view. It is hyped up by the ATP to create a spurious sense of drama known as the Race to London to be crowned the best player of that year. In reality it is just a cut above an exhibition tournament.

ed251137 , 5/12/13 12:01 PM

Can someone please explain to me why the time violation rule is not enforced in the WTA but is in the ATP? Is the WTA version of the game different from that practiced at the ATP? The only WTA matches I watch are those involving Serena and she takes her sweet time when serving...............

rafaisthebest , 5/12/13 12:22 PM

holdserve, 5/12/13 7:43 AM

Actually, Fed hasn't beaten Rafa at a major since 2007 when Rafa was just 21. Even then, Fed has only beaten him on grass whereas Rafa has beaten Fed on all three. major surfaces.

Fed is the no trick pony in this matchup, no?

#11umble

Conspirator , 5/12/13 1:21 PM

ritb,
Wow he did something that hasn't been done in a whole 2 years. Incredible. Not. It's still not a record. Borg won 49 straight matches in 1978 so I'm sure that's more finals appearances. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ATP_World_Tour_records#Consecutive_streak s

nadline,
Can you tell me when Nadal made a 'few' WTF finals? Don't let facts get in the way right? Only 2010. Cut the crap please. :-)

chr18 , 5/12/13 1:55 PM

chr18, please tell me the dates when Borg took 7 months off the Tour injured.........

rafaisthebest , 5/12/13 2:14 PM

There is no record for coming back from a 7 month injury lol.

chr18 , 5/12/13 2:23 PM

It must be fun burying your head in a sand and not knowing the reality. No one puts Borg as a greater player ahead of Sampras because he won 11 slams in the delusional world of rafabots and sampras won only 7.

Ofcourse Year end championships dont matter. They have never been won by the legends in rafa world - kneedal, muster, bruguera, costa, ferrero and other spanish clowns! Too bad, the tennis experts actually live in a real world and not some deluded trash dump rafabots inhabit.

Conspirator , 5/12/13 2:31 PM

chr18, was Borg coming back from injury and a seven months layoff? No.
So ritb's assertion stands.
It is clear Rafa is still not in top form. He hasn't yet reached his former consistency. But if his knee holds up, expect him to dominate the rest of the season.

Pundits were saying the game had moved on in his absence, it was more competitive, it was Djokovic and Murray's era, he might be reduced to a spectator of the wonderful tennis that had evolved in his absence?
He makes a spectacular return staking his claim to the so-called new era and Fedbots don't think it is remarkable or a record? 7 months out injured!
Re: nadline's remark. A few means not zero. Not quite like your 3 clay court titles=1 clay court title. You need to seriously brush up your math.

holdserve , 5/12/13 2:46 PM

Ah fedkovic, truth hurts right? The truth that hard court is an inferior surface? Not an authentic surface? That Borg is actually the Greatest till now on authentic surfaces?

But I am sure in your delusional world where you refuse to acknowledge the Fed-Rafa h2h, you won't find it hard to forget the inconvenient fact that Fed is behind both Borg and Rafa on authentic surfaces.

holdserve , 5/12/13 2:54 PM
