• Nishikori takes on Andujar for a chance at Madrid semis

    5/10/13 12:43 PM | Cheryl Murray
Nishikori takes on Andujar for a chance at Madrid semis Japan's Kei Nishikori, in the quarterfinals after an epic win over Roger Federer in the third round, will take on Spanish wildcard Pablo Andujar in Friday's quarterfinal play.

The most surprising quarterfinal of an already-surprising tournament features world No. 16 Kei Nishikori taking on No.114 Pablo Andujar.

Nishikori, who has stated that clay is not his best surface, upset No. 2 seed Roger Federer in the third round. And instead of another seed, the Japanese man will face a Spanish wildcard in Pablo Andujar.

Andujar has had fortune smile upon him this week. The Spaniard drew struggling Croat Marin Cilic, the No. 10 seed, in the first round and American John Isner in the second, whose play on clay is spotty at best.

Daniel Gimeno-Traver had been playing well enough this week to take out Andujar, but he sustained an injury during their third round match and had to retire before the completion of the first set.

Nishikori will go in as the prohibitive favorite. This is the only good tournament for Andujar all year, and he already has a loss to the Nishikori in their other meeting. Nishikori in straight sets.

This Madrid tourney has really been full of drama!!! First with Novak, Roger, Dimi, almost Andy, almost Rafa and now (almost) Nishikori!!!

Dram, drama, drama!!

I would have thought Nishikori wins this match. I didn't get to see it because I was watching my recording of Rafa's match. I only saw the last few games. So Andujar the wild card is through to the semis.

Dimi and Nishi are experiencing the same malady.
