    Murray, Berdych battle in quarterfinal World No. 3 Andy Murray looks to reach the final four in Madrid with a victory over World No. 6 Tomas Berdych. The players are scheduled to contest their 9th career meeting late Friday.

    Third seed Andy Murray will attempt to break a 4-4 series tie with sixth seed Tomas Berdych late Friday. The Czech holds a 2-0 edge on clay.

    Murray came through a difficult round of 16 match against 16th seed Gilles Simon, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6(6). The 25-year-old Scot squandered five match points before closing the match in two hours and 58 minutes.

    Murray is seeking his first Madrid semifinal berth since winning the championship title in 2008.

    Berdych advanced to the quarterfinal with a straight-sets dismissal of South Africa's Kevin Anderson. The 27-year-old Czech tallied 10 aces and three service breaks en route to a 7-6(6), 7-5 victory.

    Berdych is bidding for his third semifinal berth at the tournament.
