  • Nadal closing in on Madrid quarterfinal

    5/9/13 4:04 AM | Kelli DeMario
Nadal closing in on Madrid quarterfinal Two-time Madrid champion Rafael Nadal looks to extend his run at the tournament, as he takes the court against former world No. 8 Mikhail Youzhny. The two are slated to contest their 14th career meeting on Thursday.

World No. 5 Rafael Nadal holds a 9-4 series edge against former World No. 8 Mikhail Youzhny. The Spaniard leads 2-0 in clay-court matches contested.

Nadal is through to the round of 16 after taking out France's Benoit Paire in straight sets. The 26-year-old passed through the 87-minute match unbroken, 6-3, 6-4.

"That's an important victory today," Nadal assessed. "Each match in this kind of tournament is very demanding from the first round. He was a very uncomfortable opponent. He makes you play quite badly. He doesn't give you any rhythm. He has one of the best backhands in the circuit, without any doubt."

Nadal is seeking his 7th consecutive quarterfinal berth of the season.

Youzhny advanced to the third round following his three-set victory over Spain's Nicolas Almagro. The former world No. 8 is bidding for his first quarterfinal since February, when he reached the final four in Zagreb.

Break Rafa, leads 2-1

rafaisthebest , 5/9/13 3:42 PM

Hmmmm, Rafa's cooking!

rafaisthebest , 5/9/13 3:47 PM

Andrew Castle has just confirmed, as did Leif Siras yesterday on SKY that this whole debacle of enforcing the time limit between points is down to Roger Federer.

nadline , 5/9/13 3:49 PM

Rafa is an alien, of that I am convinced............

rafaisthebest , 5/9/13 3:59 PM

Rafa heating it up out there.

cherylmurray , 5/9/13 4:00 PM

1st set Rafa 6:2

nadline , 5/9/13 4:03 PM

1st set Rafa, 6-2. Much improved shot making compared to yesterday. Did not face a single break point.

rafaisthebest , 5/9/13 4:04 PM

Rafa is missing a few 1st serves.

nadline , 5/9/13 4:06 PM

^^Yes, but he won 83% of the first serves he got in in the 1st set.

rafaisthebest , 5/9/13 4:09 PM

Break Rafa in 2nd set, 2-1

rafaisthebest , 5/9/13 4:17 PM

I hope Rafa doesn't relax because Youzhny looks for the taking.

Vamos Rafa

nadline , 5/9/13 4:17 PM

I am getting SICK of Robbie Koenig, he is commentating and he keeps talking about how Djokovic beats Rafa with this and that shot..........geez, this is a Rafa/Youzhny match!

rafaisthebest , 5/9/13 4:24 PM

Points for the double break.

cherylmurray , 5/9/13 4:26 PM

Rafa in rare form today...including with his arguing.

RickyDimon , 5/9/13 4:30 PM

OUTRAGEOUS call. That was out by 6 inches.

cherylmurray , 5/9/13 4:30 PM

Rafa, focus!

rafaisthebest , 5/9/13 4:37 PM

They should just use hawkeye on clay.

nadline , 5/9/13 4:38 PM

You'd think that's what would be exercising the mind of the President of the Player's Council, instead of pursuing a fruitless vendetta against Rafa...........

rafaisthebest , 5/9/13 4:46 PM

What happen.......have they stopped play?

Monalysa , 5/9/13 4:47 PM

If Rafa hadn't been cheated of that point it could have been a bread-stick 2nd set

rafaisthebest , 5/9/13 4:47 PM

epic last shot

RickyDimon , 5/9/13 4:49 PM

Rafa wins, 62 63

nadline , 5/9/13 4:50 PM

GSM Rafa, 6-2, 6-3

rafaisthebest , 5/9/13 4:50 PM

you never really had the feeling Youzhny was ever going to do anything special today, whenever he had to make a meaningful winner it was either netted or too long

Shireling , 5/9/13 4:52 PM

I really thougth Youhzny would have given Rafa more troubles but seems like Rafa is begining to get into his grove!!

One match at a time, Rafa.

VAMOS!!

Monalysa , 5/9/13 4:52 PM

Congrats to Rafa and all Rafa fans! One match at a time.
Federer is ruining tennis with his efforts to make everything suit him. Surface, time, court, schedule and of course the draw.

holdserve , 5/9/13 4:54 PM

Monalysa, why did you think Youzhny would trouble Rafa?

nadline , 5/9/13 4:58 PM

I guess i can never shake off that US Open match all these years ago!.......hehe!!!

Monalysa , 5/9/13 5:04 PM

RT @SteveTignor: "Even if we don't have Hawk-Eye on clay, seems like there should be a way for chair to check a replay if he can't find a mark, right? "

Quite agree, Tiggy..

rafaisthebest , 5/9/13 5:13 PM

The umpires are far too casual. Gulbis had a ding dong with one the other day when he played a volley on a live ball and the umpire swore blind that it had bounced twice and it clearly hadn't.

Monalysa, I was rather pleased that Youzhny beat Almagro, not that Rafa wouldn't have beaten Nico but he would have had to work harder.

nadline , 5/9/13 5:19 PM

True. Nico is a true pain even if he always ends up losing..............

rafaisthebest , 5/9/13 5:31 PM

I never expected Youzhny would trouble Rafa...this was rather anemic match...Youzhny obviously tired and with no enthusiasm slept through the match...at some point in the second set Rafa fell asleep himself (including the umpire!) and Youzhny felt like waking up but Rafa would not let it last long...overall, not a very exciting match, not that I complain about it...:)

It is great for our Rafa to move one step closer to the title...nice easy win...not much effort needed :)

Vamos Rafa!

How far out was the serve that upset Rafa (after it was called in)? This far: pic.twitter.com/g7DzlxPT1E

I was happy to see Youzhny beat Almagro. As ritb said, Almagro is a real pain even thought he does lose. I didn't want Rafa to have to push himself in only his second match. I never thought Youzhny would put up much resistance.

Well done, Rafa!

Nativenewyorker , 5/9/13 8:07 PM

In the same vein, Ferru better get his skates on and beat Haas! I do not like the look of this Haas, the way he is painting the lines he will make life difficult for Rafa if he makes it into the quarters.

rafaisthebest , 5/9/13 8:17 PM

RT @bgtennisnation: "the only way Rafa can regain the #4 spot on monday is Little beast would have to lose this match to Haas, and Rafa would have to win tourney "

Now I am conflicted.............

rafaisthebest , 5/9/13 8:27 PM

I'm not!! Whatever will be will be!! Haas and Rafa would be an exciting match.............if Ferrer loses Rafa may become no.4 and that would be good. Rafa to me has played the best in all the players since his come-back, he is no.2 heading into WTF so he should be seeded in the top four for the slams!!! I would not be too sad if Ferrer loses. Haas may be tricky for Rafa, but so what?! Rafa has his own set of tricks too!!!

VAMOS!!

Monalysa , 5/9/13 8:45 PM

Ferru it will be for Rafa tomorrow........
