  • Murray meets Simon in round of 16

    5/9/13 5:07 PM | Kelli DeMario
Murray meets Simon in round of 16 World No. 3 Andy Murray will be looking to reach the final eight in Madrid, as he steps on court to face France's Gilles Simon. The players are slated to contest their 12th career meeting late Thursday.

World No. 3 Andy Murray holds a 10-1 series advantage over World No. 17 Gilles Simon. The Scot leads 3-1 in clay-court matches contested.

Murray is through to the third round after taking out Germany's Florian Mayer in straight sets. The 26-year-old Scot held 11 of 12 break points through two hours and 4 minutes of play.

“Yeah, I was struggling. I think both of us were at the end of the first set,” Murray explained. “There were so many long points. Also, it's hard to explain, but if you're playing someone that plays with a nice rhythm it's a lot easier to breathe during the points. You get into a rhythm of how the points are getting played.

“Against him, he's playing different shots all of the time. Some low ones; some high ones; he's coming to the net; he makes you run forwards; backwards; and to the side. You're quite tense in the rallies. I was finishing a lot of the points very out of breath.”

Murray will attempt to make his fourth quarterfinal at the Mutua Madrid Open.

Simon advanced to the round of 16 following his straight-sets dismissal of fellow Frenchman Jeremy Chardy. The 28-year-old is seeking his second quarterfinal berth in Madrid.
