• Federer takes on Nishikori for quarterfinal spot

    5/9/13 4:08 AM | Cheryl Murray
Federer takes on Nishikori for quarterfinal spot The top seed left in the draw and defending champion will battle Kei Nishikori in the round of 16 as the entire men's draw takes the court.

After taking some six weeks off to rest and train, Roger Federer is back and looking to defend his 2012 Madrid title. The Swiss was impressive in his opening round match against Radek Stepanek, which he won 6-3, 6-3.

His upcoming match against Kei Nishikori might be slightly more challenging, as the Japanese man is more proficient on clay than Stepanek. But if history is any indicator, Federer should once again breeze through.

The two players met on just one other occasion, a 2011 clash on the hard courts of Federer's home tournament in Basel. The world No. 2 won that match in easy straight sets. But Nishikori has now come into his own as a player, now sitting at No. 16 in the world.

Federer will still have the advantage, but Nishikori should give the crowd some entertainment. Federer in straight sets.

Federer trying to be Rafa and hit a running forehand, fails of course. He should stick to shanks............

rafaisthebest , 5/9/13 5:19 PM

Nishikori breaks.

nadline , 5/9/13 5:22 PM

Stop taunting THEM!!!

Monalysa , 5/9/13 5:39 PM

Federer drops the 1st set to Nishi and the commies say Fed looks rusty. First day he played they were purring about how he looked like he never took extended down time after IW................

Excuses, excuses...........give Nishi his due.

rafaisthebest , 5/9/13 5:39 PM

Cant believe what im seeing!!!..........are we en route to another upset?!!!

Monalysa , 5/9/13 5:41 PM

Conspiracy...........they watered Nishi's end too much so he won't slide so easily.....

rafaisthebest , 5/9/13 5:43 PM

Taking 10 secs between points is not helping Federer. He needs a couple of warnings for time violation. That's what puts fire in your belly.

nadline , 5/9/13 5:45 PM

cant see nishikori pulling the upset

isfand , 5/9/13 5:53 PM

verdasco tsonga match is interesting

isfand , 5/9/13 5:58 PM

breaks in both matches

isfand , 5/9/13 6:00 PM

double break verdasco's madrid seems over

isfand , 5/9/13 6:05 PM

Monalysa , 5/9/13 6:10 PM

And Nishi's. He has no clue how to move on clay. Fed will walk it now............

rafaisthebest , 5/9/13 6:19 PM

Fed a break down in the 3rd. I know he really doesn't want to lose his 20th match to Rafa but this is going a bit too far, no?

Conspirator , 5/9/13 6:32 PM

^^^Snap! You took the words out of my mouth!

rafaisthebest , 5/9/13 6:33 PM

RT @enricomariariva The fact that Dimitrov is the new Federer doesn't necessary mean that Federer needs to became the old Dimitrov
Retweeted by Neil Harman

Conspirator , 5/9/13 6:39 PM

^^^Are you sure, ritb?

Federer won't be able to blame rust because he said the break would make him hard to beat. The commies will be stuck for an excuse as they praised him when to the hilt when he beat Stepanek.

nadline , 5/9/13 6:41 PM

Fed is out, he tanked to avoid Rafa............

rafaisthebest , 5/9/13 6:42 PM

Oooooh, extra venom from the fedfarts now (Dimikovic, you know who you are.)

chr19, your name is safe for at least another tournament.

Conspirator , 5/9/13 6:45 PM

Fed is a fraud.............that was a lame 3rd set if ever I saw one.

rafaisthebest , 5/9/13 6:45 PM

Fed still not moving up in the Race.

nadline , 5/9/13 6:45 PM

Young guns blazing in Madrid. Congrats to Kei, well done.

danica , 5/9/13 6:45 PM

Now Leif Siras on SKY is blaming the delay after they watered the court, saying that Federer lost his momentum.

nadline , 5/9/13 6:49 PM

So Djokovic is out, Federer is out, does this mean Fedkovic goes out too? Or wait, he will come back as Dimikori............

rafaisthebest , 5/9/13 6:49 PM

Yet another example of Rafa available but Fed unable to make it past the 3rd round. He was unbeatable in his 1st round bye though.

May slip out of the top 10 in the Race now. That's a shame.

Conspirator , 5/9/13 6:50 PM

nishikori played well, deserves the win

isfand , 5/9/13 6:50 PM

I think I hear Rafa laughing for 10 minutes.

Conspirator , 5/9/13 6:52 PM

Haha, just read on twitter that Nishi is the new King of Klei

Conspirator , 5/9/13 6:56 PM

Nadline, here's your answer:

RT @SteveTignor: "Kei was good, Fed rusty. Much-anticipated Nishikori-Andujar quarter now a reality. "

Fed meant he will be hard to beat AFTER Madrid..........

rafaisthebest , 5/9/13 6:56 PM

...and before the 2nd round in Rome.

Conspirator , 5/9/13 6:58 PM

Cheryl is so dumbstruck she is speechless!

I had a niggling suspicion that Djokovic was not exactly 'unhappy' exiting after just one match. But Federer, as defending champ, falling at the 2nd fence is another matter entirely.

ed251137 , 5/9/13 6:58 PM

Was Federer booed?

rafaisthebest , 5/9/13 7:00 PM

Good news for Andy...;)

RT @juanjo_sports: "In 2012, Federer built his rise to #1 on a string of tournament wins: Rotterdam, Dubai, IW, Madrid, worth 3000 points. In 2013, not only did Federer not defend any of those titles: he didn't even make the final in any of them."

rafaisthebest , 5/9/13 7:12 PM

I've given up speculating let alone making a prediction. It's clear Tiriac ordered an undercarpet of banana skins when they laid the new red clay.

And what's with the umpiring. So many dodgy calls. - Too so busy watching the second hand ticking away to keep their eye their eye of the ball.

ed251137 , 5/9/13 7:18 PM

I hear Tiriac is going for fire engine red with much much wider white lines on the center service line and a wider net cord. All other lines will be invisible.

Conspirator , 5/9/13 7:23 PM

Last sentence should read: - Too busy watching the second hand ticking away to keep their eye onf the bal.

ed251137 , 5/9/13 7:26 PM

Is this the first time the #s 1 & 2 haven't made it to the 4th round?

nadline , 5/9/13 7:27 PM

So, I did smell an upset after all!!!

Monalysa , 5/9/13 7:28 PM

I just goes to show how incredible an athlete Rafa is, after being away for 7 whole months and was able to make the finals of ALL the tournements he entered and win the majority of them!!!

Monalysa , 5/9/13 7:32 PM

Monalysa , 5/9/13 7:32 PM

You haven't heard? He was on an Uncle Toni organised and run boot camp during those 7 months working on his anti-Novak game.............

rafaisthebest , 5/9/13 7:37 PM

What happened? Fed is out? I just got on here!

Holy crap!

Nativenewyorker , 5/9/13 7:43 PM

@ Native,

Holy Moly!!!

Monalysa , 5/9/13 7:47 PM

RT @juanjo_sports: "Are we sure Madrid is played on clay? What's up with these 1st serve points won and 2nd serve points won numbers?" 04/photo/1

Fact is: Madrid is playing like a fast HC and yet it's the HC specialists who are out!

rafaisthebest , 5/9/13 7:56 PM

I haven't even watched my recording of Rafa's match yet. Now I have to see Fed's match is on the recording. This I have to see!

What a win for Nishikori!

Nativenewyorker , 5/9/13 8:05 PM

this is surprising indeed

Shireling , 5/9/13 8:38 PM

RT @ATPWorldTour: ""I'm going to go back to the practice court," says #Federer after what he labels a "disappointing" display."

Well, first you need to learn some humility, Fed. Then, maybe then you will be honest with yourself and others.

Good luck!

rafaisthebest , 5/9/13 9:02 PM

Fed has admitted that the balls fly in Madrid. What happened to his altitude training?

Fed still has no titles this year.

nadline , 5/9/13 9:08 PM

Does anyone know whether Madrid this year plays (like/really close to) a real claycourt (fast version between the surface and the altitude) rather than what is used to play like (harcourt with a thin layer of clay)?

Since they had ample time for preparing it and made it a permanent claycourt surface you'd expect the former, but does anyone know?

chlorostoma , 5/9/13 9:27 PM

@ Chloro,

I read somewhere that Madrid plays like a h/c. I think on the ATP site there was some story on thtat!

Monalysa , 5/9/13 9:44 PM

Current ATP-rankings

1. Djokovic 12 500 pts
2. Murray 8 750 pts
3. Federer 8 670 pts
4. Ferrer 6 970 pts
5. Nadal 6 385 pts
