  • Gasquet, Isner in second round action in Madrid

    5/7/13 2:43 AM | Cheryl Murray
Gasquet, Isner in second round action in Madrid Richard Gasquet and John Isner will take the court on Tuesday, as the second round begins.

Richard Gasquet (8) vs. Daniel Gimeno-Traver

Coincidentally, Richard Gasquet and Daniel Gimeno-Traver's last meeting came at the Madrid Masters back in 2011. Gimeno-Traver won that match in 3 sets. But he faces a different Richard Gasquet on Tuesday.

The Frenchman, who is ranked No. 9 in the world, has had the best-ever start to a year in 2013. Clay isn't his best surface, but he had a respectable quarterfinal showing in Monte Carlo.

By contrast, Daniel Gimeno-Traver has had a terrible start to the season. Coming into this week, he hadn't won a match since the European clay swing started in April.

Prediction - Gasquet in straight sets.

John Isner vs. Pablo Andujar (WC)

American John Isner played a great first round match to get past Guillermo Garcia-Lopez. He'll now face another Spaniard, world No. 113 Pablo Andujar.

Isner won their only other match, a meeting on hard courts of Toronto last year. The American isn't as good on clay as he is on North American hards, but the conditions in Madrid favor his game, meaning that the high bounce and relatively quick clay makes his serve nearly impossible to return.

Andujar has seen his ranking plummet from No. 33 last fall to his current spot outside the Top 100. Look for Isner to move ahead again.

I'm disappointed that Isner lost. Was hoping for him to rack up some much needed points during the clay season. Didn't see the match so can't comment on how he palyed.
