  • Nadal continues title defense against Paire

    4/25/13 1:11 AM | Kelli DeMario
Nadal continues title defense against Paire Defending champion Rafael Nadal looks to continue his bid for another title in Barcelona, as he takes the court against France's Benoit Paire. The players are slated to contest their first meeting on Thursday.

World No. 5 Rafael Nadal recorded his 35th consecutive victory in Barcelona, having ousted veteran Argentine Carlos Berlocq in straight sets. The 26-year-old, who looks to win an eighth title at the tournament, came through the match in 88 minutes, 6-4, 6-2.

“The conditions today weren't comfortable,” said the defending champion. “There was a very changeable wind that made it difficult to play at a high level. The most important thing is to accept the situation and move forward.”

Nadal is seeking his sixth consecutive quarterfinal berth of the season.

World No. 33 Benoit Paire is through to the third round after defeating Spain's Pablo Andujar in three sets. The 23-year-old Frenchman will attempt to reach his fourth tour-level quarterfinal of the season.

#Vamos Rafa

nadline , 4/25/13 3:35 PM

It's raining!

nadline , 4/25/13 3:36 PM

I am beginning to worry about these climatic changes in Europe. It looks like downpours are going to be the norm rather than the exception this Summer and wet, heavy conditions are not good for Rafa's game.

rafaisthebest , 4/25/13 3:49 PM

Now I have to endure watching the MC FINAL. Well I don't have to, so I won't; except that I have to keep track of when they come on court for today's match.

nadline , 4/25/13 4:04 PM

I feel your pain, nadline hehehehe! At least my TV feed is showing last year's Barcelona final during the rain delay.......thank God for small mercies.

rafaisthebest , 4/25/13 5:30 PM

well, at least (since he's not there) Novak's ankle will not swell due to dampness...

Shireling , 4/25/13 5:32 PM

ritb, they've shown last year's Barcelona final already.

I wonder if play will take place today. It's still raining heavily and will do for the next few days going into next week. It's sunny where I am so they should come and play here.

nadline , 4/25/13 5:47 PM

Nadline, my feed is now showing the Ferru - Tursunov match! Fair guess who my feed producer does not want to show during this delay...........

I don't think there will be any more matches today. Rafa will play 2 matches tomorrow.

rafaisthebest , 4/25/13 6:35 PM

Nadal is still shaky perhaps he is not physically 100% fit yet

tennis2011 , 4/25/13 6:49 PM

Play has been cancelled for today.

nadline , 4/25/13 7:08 PM

Gosh, it seems to be raining everywhere!!! Its has been raining here in Saint Lucia for days!!

Anyway, hate to think that Rafa might have to play 2 matches tomorrow. Anyway, its nothing that he has not done before!

Good luck my Rafatito!!

Monalysa , 4/25/13 9:13 PM

I woke early to check on the match and saw that the 2012 final with Rafa and Ferrer was being shown. Then I checked my previous recording of Almagro and Granollers to see if there was bad weather. Finally there was a moment in my recording where it started to rain and just kept on raining!

So then I realized why they were rerunning past matches. I figured that Rafa's match wouldn't happen. That's not good news, because now he will have to play two matches in one day! The forecast isn't supposed to be any better tomorrow.

I hope that Rafa can cope with this bad weather delay. I'm going to set my recording and hope for better weather tomorrow!

rafaisthebest , 4/26/13 8:56 AM

it looks like Rafa does not feel like playing tennis these days...good that he managed to win the first set...I just don't see any enthusiasm in Rafa's game...well, can't blame him for that though...

natashao , 4/26/13 11:42 AM

Paire is imploding , 5-2 Rafa in the 2nd set

Shireling , 4/26/13 12:10 PM

30-0 Rafa

Shireling , 4/26/13 12:11 PM

well, that's it (1h 26m). Hope he gets some rest for the next match this afternoon

Shireling , 4/26/13 12:13 PM

unfortunate to have to play two matches today...Rafa did save some energy and that is a good thing...he will have to perform better in the afternoon which I believe he will...he was not focused in this match...I always dislike when Rafa faces these young up-comers in early rounds...Rafa not knowing Paire's game was a little tentative...does Rosol comes to his mind in the situations like this I wonder...
good win after all...let's wait for the afternoon where I expect to see some real tennis from our boy...
Vamos Rafa!

natashao , 4/26/13 12:20 PM

Who will Rafa play next?

atul1985 , 4/26/13 12:49 PM

Albert Ramos!

natashao , 4/26/13 1:47 PM

Forget the Harlem Shake. We're about to see the Spanish Fold.

chr18 , 4/26/13 1:59 PM

so, chr18
how's Ramos going to fold, care to enlighten us?

Shireling , 4/26/13 2:04 PM

At least a "Spanish Fold" whatever would provide more competition for Rafa than a Federer punchbag drill.

#MyBackIsKILLINGme

Conspirator , 4/26/13 2:45 PM

So, chr18, did Berdych just fold to a Spaniard? Or is it just Spaniards who fold, in your esteemed opinion?

rafaisthebest , 4/26/13 2:48 PM

I think all spanish players sign an amendment by which they swear trying to advance through the rounds and then lose to Nadal, it makes perfect sense.

Shireling , 4/26/13 3:43 PM

^^Ja, ja makes perfect sense! Conundrum: what happens if it's two Spaniards playing each other in the early rounds, who decides which one goes through, is it Rafa? If it is, then this has to be specified in the amendment, no?

#Pick&Choose
#Fold

rafaisthebest , 4/26/13 4:15 PM

:)
If two spaniards play against each other when one of them isn't Rafa Nadal, then a delegate of U. Tony sits in the crowd and secretely communicates to one of them - at some point during the match - who's to lose (gladiator style)

Shireling , 4/26/13 4:45 PM

Rafa playing well

atul1985 , 4/26/13 5:24 PM

Still hasn't reached "Rafa" level, still making some uncharacteristic errors off his forehand....

rafaisthebest , 4/26/13 5:44 PM

Brilliant 2nd set from Rafa...no drop in intensity at all

atul1985 , 4/26/13 6:16 PM

Good observation, about the intensity level.....but let's be honest, Ramos was awful at times.

rafaisthebest , 4/26/13 6:30 PM

^^Spanish Fold at it's finest.

chr18 , 4/26/13 6:42 PM

,,,

luckystar , 4/26/13 6:53 PM

chr19, change the record.

Vamos Rafa

nadline , 4/26/13 7:22 PM

I think Rafa had trouble with Paire in that first set because he doesn't give his opponent a lot of rhythm. That's what the tennis channel commentators were saying. Also, Rafa doesn't know his game. The guy seemed very temperamental during the match.

As far as Rafa playing Albert Ramos, this propaganda about the "Spanish Fold" really is getting old.

I hope to see a replay of Rafa's match with Ramos. I thought that Paire was quite dreadful in the second set. I am wondering if Rafa played well or Ramos was just playing poorly.

Nativenewyorker , 4/26/13 7:25 PM

Rafa will play Raonic in the SF.
