• Nadal continues Monte Carlo campaign against Kohlschreiber

    4/18/13 3:48 AM | Cheryl Murray
Nadal continues Monte Carlo campaign against Kohlschreiber Rafael Nadal will battle No. 3 seed on round of 16 at the Monte-Carlo Country Club. The Spaniard is trying for his ninth title in the principality.

Before last year, Rafael Nadal had never lost a match to Philipp Kohlschreiber. But the German scored his first win in nine tries at home on the grass of Halle, a pre-cursor to his shocking early exit at the 2012 Wimbledon.

But Nadal is back now on his beloved clay at his most successful tournament and Kohlschreiber comes into the match off a lengthy 3-set encounter with Pablo Andujar in the second round.

Nadal's second-round match was a brief 6-1, 6-2 win over Marinko Matosevic, with the Spaniard quickly shaking off the rust of a month's layoff following his win at the Indian Wells Masters.

Kohlschreiber has the kind of game that can be dangerous to just about anyone on a given day. The German veteran can run on a hot streak and do damage with his fantastic backhand. But Nadal is so at home on the clay at the Monte-Carlo Masters that any sort of upset for the German is highly unlikely.

Prediction - Nadal in straight sets.

I actually think that the one-handed backhand doesn't work against Rafa as Fed knows all too well. I wouldn't attach any importance to the match in Halle. Rafa wasn't in a fit state to play well just coming off RG and now we know the state of his knees then. Phillip himself said that Rafa wasn't ready to play on grass.

However, nothing can be taken for granted. Kohls has a great serve and is an experienced player, so Rafa will have to be on his 'A' game.

Kohls targetting Rafa's backhand.......

rafaisthebest , 4/18/13 12:04 PM

As expected, Kohls is playing annoyingly solid tennis..............

rafaisthebest , 4/18/13 12:26 PM

1st set Rafa, 6-2

rafaisthebest , 4/18/13 12:40 PM

WOW an ace for the set point. 6-2 Rafa 1st set.

Raindrops , 4/18/13 12:42 PM

Watching Kohls play you can't help but be reminded of the National stereotype" solid, efficient and boring...........

rafaisthebest , 4/18/13 12:56 PM

Nadline - I agree that Kohli's one-hander won't work that well against Nadal on clay...but it DOES work against other players, and it's a big reason why he's gotten the upset wins that he has.

cherylmurray , 4/18/13 12:58 PM

Enough already, Rafa. Break Kohls and let's move on....

rafaisthebest , 4/18/13 1:01 PM

Kohls is THIS close to setting off my annoy-o-meter...........

rafaisthebest , 4/18/13 1:04 PM

Just managed to get back for the start of 2nd set. Looking at the stats - very encouraging!

ed251137 , 4/18/13 1:04 PM

Perfect timing for the break.

ed251137 , 4/18/13 1:12 PM

Good boy, Rafa, you listened to me: break.......Rafa to serve for a 5-3 lead.

rafaisthebest , 4/18/13 1:12 PM

Duly delivers. Rafa leads 5-3

rafaisthebest , 4/18/13 1:16 PM

This has been a pretty poor match. Rafa hasn't had to play well at all to win. I get the impression that rafa would really like someone to give him a bit of a test so that he can get in to some hitting rhythm.

willmw101 , 4/18/13 1:19 PM

His topspin is so difficult to handle on clay that he is constantly squeezing errors out of his opponents in the early-goings.

cherylmurray , 4/18/13 1:21 PM

Boring match. GSM Rafa 6-2 6-4. Hope rafa raises his level against dimitrov.

willmw101 , 4/18/13 1:22 PM

GSM Rafa. 6-2,6-4

rafaisthebest , 4/18/13 1:23 PM

The perfect workout for Rafa.

ed251137 , 4/18/13 1:23 PM

........and not to hard on the nerves for us.

ed251137 , 4/18/13 1:24 PM

Next up tomorrow: Baby Fed. Let's see if he can do what Big Fed has given up trying to do: knock Rafa off his MC perch!

rafaisthebest , 4/18/13 1:36 PM

Congratulations to Rafa on the victory! Vamooosss!

Today, Rafa stayed awake during the whole match. I hope he'll continue to do so, no matter how his opponent is playing. :)

Augustina08 , 4/18/13 1:37 PM

Happy to see him winning this match, next Dimitrov.

Vamos Rafa!

Will this be the first ever encounter of Rafa and Dimitrov?

Raindrops , 4/18/13 1:47 PM

They played in Rotterdam in 2009 and Rafa won in 3.

nadline , 4/18/13 1:55 PM

If at any point in the match dimitrov serves for a set(highly unlikely to occur, but still a very small chance) I will be interested to see how many times he double faults.....

tj600 , 4/18/13 1:59 PM

"Let's see if he can do what Big Fed has given up trying to do: knock Rafa off his MC perch!"

Becareful what you ask for!!!

Monalysa , 4/18/13 2:48 PM

@Mona, whatever happens, Rafa will fight. I expect Dimipova to show up and fight, I rank him higher than M.........sevic and Kohly.

rafaisthebest , 4/18/13 2:59 PM

I actually stayed up to see this match. Kohls tried to use his backhand but on the clay it's not nearly as effective. I heard about his hamstring injury but I didn't see any problem with his movement. I think Rafa was able to dictate points and not let Kohls play his game.

I think Rafa is looking better with every match. He is working off some of the rust and also started hitting the lines with his dtl forehand.

I don't know that I can stay up again for his next match with Dimitrov, but I think it could be interesting. Dimitrov certainly has the shots and the game, but he doesn't have it mentally. I think he should come out and play as though he has nothing to lose.

I also expect Rafa to play even better.
