  • Djokovic aims for Monte-Carlo quarterfinals vs. Monaco

    4/18/13 6:47 AM | Ricky Dimon
Djokovic aims for Monte-Carlo quarterfinals vs. Monaco Novak Djokovic will continue his Monte-Carlo campaign on Thursday against Juan Monaco. The winner is set to face either Juan Martin Del Potro or Jarkko Nieminen in the quarterfinals.

Novak Djokovic and Juan Monaco will be going head-to-head for the seventh time in their careers when they do battle in round three of the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters on Thursday afternoon.

Djokovic has won all six of their previous encounters, including one on clay. They most recently faced each other last year on the slow stuff in Rome, where the Serb prevailed 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. A Miami semifinal clash just a few months earlier went Djokovic's way 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.

Monaco is slowly rounding to form as the season turns from hard courts to his preferred clay-court surface. The 20th-ranked Argentine had not won an ATP tournament match prior to Houston last week, but he reached the semifinals before losing to eventual champion John Isner in three sets. So far in Monte-Carlo, Monaco has taken out Martin Klizan and an in-form Ernests Gulbis.

Whereas Monaco dealt with physical problems at the start of this season, Djokovic is a bit of a question mark right now. The world No. 1 sustained an ankle injury earlier this month in Davis Cup, but he returned on Wednesday and overcame a slow start to beat Mikhail Youzhny 4-6, 6-1, 6-4. Djokovic is 22-2 for his 2013 campaign, which includes titles at the Australian Open and in Dubai.

The surface and the fact that his opponent may not be quite 100 percent will slightly benefit Monaco, but all signs point to Djokovic improving match by match and taking this one in straight sets.

I thought I'd start this thread as even Nole's fans don't seem bothered.

nadline , 4/18/13 12:47 PM

Well, thank you :). Such kindness, such manners... :)
Anyhow, this is going to be tougher on/for Nole. I don't have a nice feeling about this one.

danica , 4/18/13 1:00 PM

I didn't see the match, nor highlights, of his match against Youzny but I have read that he was limping... how can he be limping and still win?
I guess he recovered throughout the match otherwise he wouldn't even think about playing another match.

Shireling , 4/18/13 1:31 PM

They said on SKY earlier that Nole twisted his ankle again during the match yesterday.

nadline , 4/18/13 1:34 PM

What?!!!

Monalysa , 4/18/13 2:50 PM

Novak said: ""Unfortunately, I had a part of the match (in the second set) where I twisted it again,".

Not Roger Federer ?@PseudoFed
I see Novak is playing Mr. Monaco himself. I had no idea he was that young and played tennis #unusual

1st set to Monaco!!

Monalysa , 4/18/13 3:54 PM

Doctor and trainer out for djokovic.

willmw101 , 4/18/13 3:56 PM

Novak should just go home!! This is getting way to tiring!!!.............Novak just go home!!!!!

Monalysa , 4/18/13 4:00 PM

Oh look djokovic is magically feeling better again. I dont think for one second that djokovic is faking but his level drops up and down so much due to him being a drama queen in situations like this that it must be impossible for Monaco to get any rhythm.

willmw101 , 4/18/13 4:04 PM

Game over for Monaco. Djokovic in 3 easy sets.

willmw101 , 4/18/13 4:09 PM

Why is he playing on a sore ankle a month before RG?

nadline , 4/18/13 4:11 PM

either he's playing on a sore ankle which means he's an idiot or he's being a drama queen... which means he's an even bigger idiot.

willmw101 , 4/18/13 4:18 PM

This is silly
To those of you who are seeing the match, does Novak's displacement seem impeded to you or not?
I don't know about you but when I have a sore ankle it clearly shows when I walk, let alone run...

Shireling , 4/18/13 4:22 PM

If you watch closely you will notice he winces and limps whenever he loses a big point. Otherwise it doesn't seem to be bothering him unduly. What puzzles me is the number of unforced errors which cant be attributed to the ankle problem. OTH, you might expect his service to be compromised if he is having pain but on the contrary he is serving well (85% lst serve).

There is a suspicion Monaco is not 100% but is doing his best to disguise whatever is troubling him.

I think djokovic is just using the ankle to disrupt monaco's rhythm. When djokovic wins a point he shows no pain or hindrance, but if he loses a point he gesticulates and shouts and delays the match.

willmw101 , 4/18/13 4:26 PM

LOL at how bad monaco is now playing.

willmw101 , 4/18/13 4:31 PM

@4:26 PM

I had registered the same pattern.

ed251137 , 4/18/13 4:34 PM

sorry about the multi-post , wasn't intentional

Shireling , 4/18/13 4:35 PM

Oh, no probs in the third set for Novak. I'm glas his ankle is feeling better now

Shireling , 4/18/13 4:49 PM

Is Monaco sporting an injury?

Monalysa , 4/18/13 4:52 PM

There's something wrong but not sure what. Commies on Sky and French TV have mentioned it.

ed251137 , 4/18/13 5:02 PM

RT @bgtennisnation: "had to leave after the 1st set just got back was it a case of the ankle getting better or Djoker playing a bit of Opossum ?"

rafaisthebest , 4/18/13 5:18 PM

Nole is such a martyr. He soldiered on with a sore ankle for his country and now he is playing M.Carlo for the people of Monaco.

deama , 4/18/13 6:58 PM

haha, perhas a royal condo is in the offing for the djoker, who's made so many sacrifices on behalf of the many nations of which he has become a martyr/soldier. You go dkoker, good things are on the horizon just waiting for you!! keep on truckin'.

scoretracker , 4/18/13 8:42 PM

Yes doctor was out...and he told him "Zare has just arrived in Monaco"... and he didn't has a choice... he had to win:)
Greetings from MC... especially for sad willma... keep it coming .
