  • Simon, Berlocq battle in possible live 5th rubber

    4/7/13 3:32 AM | Kelli DeMario
Simon, Berlocq battle in possible live 5th rubber Should World No. 8 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga square the Davis Cup tie at 2-2 for France, compatriot Gilles Simon will look to clinch a semifinal berth against Argentina's Carlos Berlocq. The two are set to contest their 7th meeting.

World No. 13 Gilles Simon holds a 4-2 series advantage over World No. 71 Carlos Berlocq. The players last met at the 2012 tournament in Hamburg, where the Frenchman rallied to win a round of 32 clash in three sets.

Simon returns to action after losing Friday's singles rubber to former World No. 10 Juan Monaco. The 28-year-old, who struggled with a lower back injury, fell in straight sets, 6-7(2), 2-6, 4-6.

"I felt all right at the end, I had a difficult moment during the second set after losing the first,” Simon commented.

He will attempt to win his fifth Davis Cup singles rubber.

Berlocq is back on court following a five-sets defeat to World No. 8 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. The veteran, who captured the opening set, donated 54 unforced errors during the 6-4, 2-6, 3-6, 7-5, 2-6 loss.

"I was close to the best victory of my career and I didn’t get it," Berlocq lamented. "I’m sad because of that and it’s also not fair given the match I played. It could have been a great achievement, I was close to going down in history, but to have played at that pace with the world No. 8 is good.

“I think I surprised him, he didn’t start at his best. If his strategy was to make me run I don’t know if it was so good because that’s what I like most.”

Berlocq is seeking his third singles victory in Davis Cup play.
