• Top American Querrey faces Troicki in Davis Cup

    4/4/13 8:30 PM | Ricky Dimon
Top American Querrey faces Troicki in Davis Cup On Friday, Sam Querrey will contest a Davis Cup rubber for the first time as the No. 1 American in the world. He likely faces a virtual must-win situation against Viktor Troicki.

Sam Querrey and Viktor Troicki will be going head-to-head for the fourth time in their careers when they meet on the first day of Davis Cup quarterfinal action between the United States and Serbia.

Querrey's lone victory came in a dead Davis Cup rubber on the clay courts of Serbia back in 2010 via a 7-5, 6-2 decision. Both of their meaningful encounters went Troicki's way; 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 at the 2009 Belgrade event and 7-6(5), 3-6, 7-5 two years ago in Miami.

The other Friday rubber pits an in-form Serb (world No. 1 Novak Djokovic) against a slumping American (John Isner), but roles are reversed in this one. Querrey is 13-7 for the season and he is coming off consecutive fourth-round appearances in Indian Wells and Miami. The world No. 20 also advanced to semifinals in Auckland and San Jose.

Querrey is not exactly on fire, but he is playing far better tennis than his opponent right now. Troicki is 4-7 for his 2013 campaign and he has not won back-to-back matches at any tournament since Cincinnati last summer. Most recently, the world No. 44 lost in the Indian Wells first round, the Dallas Challenger second round, and the Miami second round.

Querrey, who won a pair of singles rubbers against Brazil two months ago, also has the advantage of playing at home. This won't be a breeze, but the crowd favorite should get the job done in four sets.

Well I guess Ricki sees the US as favourites. If Querrey wins, how can Serbia realistically earn three points? And yet Ricki would have you believe that Serbia are the big favourites.

At least there's still a chance. I think it is going to come down to the 5th rubber. Who will be the weakest link aka the Almugro of this tie? Isner or Troicki?
