  • Ferrer, Nishikori mix it up in Miami

    3/26/13 1:17 PM | Cheryl Murray
Ferrer, Nishikori mix it up in Miami No. 3 seed David Ferrer will take on hot player Kei Nishikori for a spot in the Sony Open quarterfinals.

World No. 5 David Ferrer will face his toughest competition of the week in Japan's Kei Nishikori. The two men are slated to do battle on Tuesday, with the winner earning a spot in the Miami quarterfinals.

Ferrer hasn't been in great form since his loss to Rafael Nadal in the final of Acapulco. The Spaniard lost his opening match in Indian Wells and has only played one competitive match in Miami, thanks to a walkover in the second round. His single match came in the third round, a straight-set, though shaky win over Fabio Fognini.

Kei Nishikori, the No. 13 seed, now enjoys a career-best ranking of 15 in the world and playing some of his best tennis to-date. The Japanese man won the title in Memphis and he's had a good run this week.

The head-to-head record is level at 2-2, with Ferrer winning their last encounter a few months ago at the Australian Open and Nishikori winning the one before that at the London Olympics.

Prediction -- WIth Nishikori's form better than it was in January and Ferrer's worse, this could be an upset win for the Japanese man. Nishikori in 3.

Ferrer in straight sets

He did it in straights but it was not easy. Great sportsman, that guy David, really :). The lines judge made an error and quickly corrected himself. It was a tiring point that David would have won. So he started yelling, was really hurt and angry, but then apologized for such outbursts. Nice to see.

I like Ferrer too, but watching this match I started being irritated by his grunting, and wondered whether he is getting moisier. It occurred to me that Almagro is an annoying grunter, and of course Granollers. Then coincidentally I noticed this articlehttp://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/tennis/news/20130326/mens-grun ting/?sct=tn_t11_a2. I hope action is taken to reverse the trend towards more and louder grunts.

"Down 0-40 vs. Simon, Janko Tipsarevic starts grunting like an absolute madman. Prolonged, angry grunts. He held. Next game? Dead silent."

I watched this match later last night. The temporary extreme grunting contrasted with Tipsy's complete silence for the rest of the match was ridiculously obvious.
