• Berdych looks to reach round of 16

    3/25/13 3:18 PM | Kelli DeMario
Berdych looks to reach round of 16 Fourth seed Tomas Berdych is back on court to face Colombia's Alejandro Falla for a place among the final 16. The players are set to contest their second career meeting on Monday.

World No. 6 Tomas Berdych holds a 1-0 series edge against World No. 60 Alejandro Falla, having won their only previous meeting at the 2012 tournament in Tokyo.

Berdych survived a difficult opening-round match against Spain's Daniel Gimeno-Traver on Saturday. The 27-year-old Czech lost the opening set before rallying to secure a three-sets victory, 5-7, 7-6(3), 6-2.

Berdych is seeking his 20th victory of the season.

Falla is through to the third round by virtue of his straight-sets upset of 25th seed Fernando Verdasco. The veteran looks to reach his first round of 16 at the Masters 1000 Miami.

    Prediction: Berdych in straight sets.

Is anyone watching this match? Berdy came back from the dead in the second set to win the tb. I couldn't believe that Falla won the first set 6-2! Finally the tennis channel switched over to this match.

Berdy is now up a break in the third set. The winner will face Querrey who got a walkover when Raonic withdrew because of strep throat.

Didn't watch the match but from the score I thought he would have lost it in two sets. Credit to him for fighting back, it seems that these top ten players do have the fighting spirit when playing against lower ranked players but not the belief when facing the top four guys. I think Berdych, like Delpo, are playing too much tennis since the beginning of the year. Delpo played five or six tournaments, and Berdych six plus DC tie, fatigue may be a contributing factor for his subpar performance here.

Berdych only has fighting spirit against the lower ranked players and old fed. he can't beat the other top 3 players, he just folds up.

luckystar, 3/26/13 4:29 AM,

As I said, the tennis channel didn't pick up this match until the latter part of the second set. From what I saw, Falla was playing very well and Berdy seemed to be kind of tired. He actually hit a second serve ace on match point for Falla to get back in the match! He fought to get it to a tb and it was tight, but Berdy pulled it out.

Falla put up a fight in the third set, but Berdy got the break. Even serving for the match, Berdy had to battle. It was an unexpected hard-earned win. I was thinking the same thing as you as I watched this match - Berdy playing too much tennis. I also agree with you about Delpo.

I do think that fatigue was a contributing factor here. I don't know what this will mean when Berdy bumps up against a well-rested Querrey. We will see.

It's the damned Race to London that makes players with half a chance of qualifying to bust a gut racheting up points early in the season by playing the maximum number of tournaments.
