  • Ferrer takes on Tursunov in Miami

    3/22/13 3:22 AM | Cheryl Murray
Ferrer takes on Tursunov in Miami No. 3 seed David Ferrer will kick off his Sony Open bid against Russian qualifier Dmitry Tursunov.

Spain's David Ferrer comes into the Miami Masters off a pair of disappointing losses. The first came in the finals of Acapulco, where Rafael Nadal handed Ferrer a 6-0, 6-2 crushing defeat. Ferrer followed that result up with a loss in his opening match at the Indian Wells Masters to Kevin Anderson.

The one bit of good news for Ferrer is that he should be well-rested for this week. The Spaniard has already played 25 matches this season, with an impressive 21-4 record.

Tursunov is actually in the middle of a comeback. The Russian has seen a rankings rise, from No. 123 in January to his current position at No. 71. Tursunov successfully qualified in Marseille and advanced all the way to the semifinals. He also had a good quarterfinal showing in Dubai, but he lost in the first round of Indian Wells to world No. 119 Philipp Petzschner.

Likely, Ferrer's result in Indian Wells was the exception rather than the rule. The Spaniard, who was surely tired going into the California desert, will have had more than a week to recover from his jam-packed start to the season. Tursunov may be on an upswing right now, but a win over Ferrer is a tough ask.

Prediction - Ferrer in straight sets.
