  • Djokovic works overtime but takes care of Querrey

    3/14/13 3:48 PM | Ricky Dimon
Djokovic works overtime but takes care of Querrey Novak Djokovic holds off Sam Querrey in straight sets during a very late night session on Wednesday in Indian Wells. Djokovic will go up against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the quarterfinals.

Novak Djokovic took the court after midnight but got the job done in straight sets against Sam Querrey, prevailing 6-0, 7-6(6) in the fourth round of the BNP Paribas Open on Wednesday night. Djokovic needed one hour and 27 minutes to ensure a showdown with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga on Friday.

For a while, this one progressed similarly to the most recent encounter between Djokovic and Querrey--which took place last fall at the Paris Masters. A somewhat disinterested Djokovic did not lose a single game in the first set of that meeting before getting upset 0-6, 7-6(5), 6-4.

Querrey again failed to win a game in the opening set this time in Indian Wells but forced a tiebreaker in the second. Djokovic even led by a break at 3-2 only to drop serve out of nowhere for the first time in the entire match. Querrey also made an escape at 5-5, saving one break point and surviving three deuces.

The 6'6'' American also staged a comeback in the tiebreaker. After losing five points in a row to trail 5-1, Querrey eventually fought off two match points at 4-6 (on his opponent's serve) and 5-6. Djokovic, however, benefited from two Querrey errors on the final two points to clinch victory.

"It was very similar to Bercy," the top-ranked Serb explained. "I had a few unforced errors and he started to play better. That’s why he came back. But I felt throughout the whole match, I had control and was moving and hitting well, so I’m very happy with the performance."
