  • Federer and Wawrinka clash in all-Swiss affair

    3/13/13 3:24 AM | Cheryl Murray
Federer and Wawrinka clash in all-Swiss affair Roger Federer will take on occasional doubles partner Stanislas Wawrinka for a spot in the Indian Wells quarterfinals.

This matchup has proven to be a near impossible task for Stanislas Wawrinka. He has beaten Swiss teammate Roger Federer just once in 13 tries, a win that came way back in 2009 on the clay courts of Monte Carlo.

Federer has been slightly off form over the past few weeks, but he is so familiar with Wawrinka's game that anything but a straightforward win for the world No. 2 would be a surprise.

Wawrinka, ranked No. 18 in the world, has had one good result in 2013, a final showing in Buenos Aires. Neither he nor Federer has managed to secure a title this year, but as expected, Federer is the far more consistent of the two players.

Wawrinka has a great backhand, but he simply can't keep up with Federer off the ground. Expect a straight-set win for the No. 2 seed.

Federer double faults the second set to Stanford.

New ATP rule: mulligan can be taken on a double fault set point down.

Then, he tries to challenge HIS OWN serve that was called IN AFTER he dumps his volley into the net!

@PseudoFed
Stupid rules. I thought you could challenge a call up to two months after the match. #conspiracy

Don't worry, Stanford won't want to beat his friend. LOL

So, let me get this straight. He's basically arguing that he didn't have enough time to challenge. Oh yeah, right Fed, like you would have challenged your own serve if you had won the point? Like you would have stopped the point had your volley gone over? Really? Who do you think you are? Novak?

This match is like a Williams vs Williams match.

Fed hardly looking in his zone.

I can't remember the last time I saw Fed double fault away a tb! That was shocking. Even the crowd collectively gasped. I just hope that people give Wawa more respect after this match, however it turns out. He did not roll over for Fed! The guy has brought his game.

Fed doesn't look like he is the zone at all. I don't think anyone thought this would go three sets or be this tight of a match.

Ha ha, Fed moonballs a few shots to get the last game. He challenged his own serve earlier on. So, he's been doing what some of his supporters criticized Rafa for doing! What an irony!

That challenge that his own serve was out AFTER he dumped the volley into the net was classic!

"No you don't understand me!" Haha

Wawa trying his best to play worse than Fed.

Hope he performs better in the Qf's

Federer+HawkwEye...

an on-going Love story,lol.

Fed 'pulled a Raonic' in the 2nd set. His shots had nothing on them tonight. Just gutted it out and waited for Stan to self-destruct. The only slight positive is that by taking so long Nadal has to play in cooler conditions so Gulbis will have a chance to extend the match a bit or even possibly take a set.

Fed looked like he was about to cry.

Fed got the job done finally! He was ill last year but still managed to win the title here, so don't count him out!

I do thoroughly enjoy how Federer calls Wawrinka "Stanley." #bnppo13

Roger Federer ?@PseudoFed
Thanks Stanford. Not a bad win given I had a hot water bottle strapped to My back #soothing
