  • Federer, Gulbis look to advance to the fourth round

    3/11/13 3:25 AM | Cheryl Murray
Federer, Gulbis look to advance to the fourth round Roger Federer will look to take one step closer to an Indian Wells title defense as he takes on Croatia's Ivan Dodig in the third round. On-fire Ernests Gulbis will also be in action.

Ernests Gulbis (Q) vs. Andreas Seppi (20)

Ernests Gulbis is on one of the hottest streaks in all of tennis. The Latvian, who started off the year losing badly at Challenger events, now has a title to his name. Gulbis secured the Delray Beach crown over Frenchman Edouard Roger-Vasselin.

But his results this week have been even more impressive. Gulbis once again came up through qualifying, took out Feliciano Lopez and then grabbed his biggest scalp of the season with a win over No. 9 seed Janko Tipsarevic in the second round.

Andreas Seppi is mostly known as a clay-courter, but the Italian has had a few good results on hard courts, including a round of 16 showing at the Australian Open and a quarterfinal last week in Dubai. Still, as well as Seppi has been playing, he isn't playing anywhere near as well as Gulbis at the moment.

    Prediction - Gulbis in 2.

Roger Federer (2) vs. Ivan Dodig

This will be the first ever meeting between Roger Federer and world No. 60 Ivan Dodig. The Croat has had a decent start to the 2013 season. Dodig has a couple of quarterfinal showings at 250 events and even a third round result at the Australian Open.

Federer has been off form for a while. The Swiss, who is still ranked No. 2 in the world behind Novak Djokovic, hasn't yet won a title this year. Still, despite the fact that Dodig is playing reasonably well and Federer is not up to his usual standards, this should be a routine straight-set victory for the second seed.

Prediction - Federer in straight sets.
