• Fish finally back on the court in Indian Wells

    3/9/13 8:22 PM | Ricky Dimon
Fish finally back on the court in Indian Wells Mardy Fish will contest his first match since last summer when he takes the court on Sunday in Indian Wells. Up first for Fish is fellow American Bobby Reynolds.

After a heart problem and related health issues wrecked his 2012 season, Mardy Fish will make his long-awaited return to tennis on Sunday at the BNP Paribas Open. Fish has not played a match since withdrawing from the U.S. Open prior to a scheduled fourth-round showdown against Roger Federer.

Up first for Fish in Indian Wells is a second career meeting with Bobby Reynolds. Their only previous encounter came five years ago on the indoor hard courts of Memphis, where Fish prevailed 6-7(3), 6-4, 6-2.

Reynolds, one year younger than his fellow American at 30 years old, is already enjoying one of the best weeks of his career. The world No. 166 needed a wild card just to get into qualifying before beating Flavio Cipolla and Michael Russell (in a third-set tiebreaker). Reynolds, who had not won a main-draw match at a Masters event since Miami in 2009, defeated Benjamin Becker 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 on Friday.

This is an impossible one to predict, because Fish is the biggest question mark on the ATP Tour this year and certainly at this tournament. Reynolds has to be playing with a ton of confidence, so Fish cannot waste getting back in gear if he wants to fend off his countryman's upset bid.
