• Tomic kicks off Indian Wells campaign against Bellucci

Tomic kicks off Indian Wells campaign against Bellucci Bernard Tomic will be looking to continue his productive 2013 season when he takes the court in Indian Wells on Thursday. Standing in his way of the second round is Thomaz Bellucci.

Bernard Tomic and Thomaz Bellucci will be going head-to-head for the second time in their careers when they clash in round one of the BNP Paribas Open on Thursday. Bellucci won their only previous encounter 7-6(6), 6-3 last year on the clay courts of Stuttgart.

Hard courts will give Tomic a much better shot in this matchup. In fact, he has already been playing brilliant tennis on the surface this season. The 20-year-old Aussie owns a 9-4 record, which includes his first ATP title at home in Sydney. Tomic hopes to get back on track following an upset loss to Victor Hanescu in Dubai.

Aside from a Davis Cup upset of John Isner (which itself does not seem so impressive now), Bellucci has been dreadful in 2013. His record stands at 3-6 following consecutive first-round losses in Buenos Aires and Acapulco.

If Bellucci cannot win matches on clay, his hard-court prospects are dismal. With Tomic in solid form, there is no reason to think the world No. 45 will surrender even a set.
