• In-form Gulbis takes on Lopez in Indian Wells opener

    3/7/13 4:37 AM | Cheryl Murray
In-form Gulbis takes on Lopez in Indian Wells opener Latvia's Ernests Gulbis, who won the Delray Beach title, successfully got through qualifying to earn his spot in the main draw opposite Spaniard Feliciano Lopez.

Ernests Gulbis leapt a whopping 42 spots in the rankings in one week's time. The Latvian, who was also forced to qualify in Delray Beach, made a run all the way to the title. And though he is ranked more than 30 spots lower than world No. 34 Feliciano Lopez, he is enjoying better form than the Spaniard at the moment.

Lopez has had exactly one good result in 2013. He made the final in Memphis back in February, but otherwise it has been a series of disappointing first and second round losses for him.

Gulbis didn't have the easiest path through qualifying. He was taken to 3 sets by Christian Harrison, talented 18 year-old brother of Ryan Harrison. But Gulbis has made a habit of playing worse against lower-ranked players than he does against those in the top 50.

Lopez is a good hard court player, but he was unlucky, drawing Gulbis, who is not only enjoying good form at the moment, but also has a feel for the court due to his qualifying matches.

Prediction - Gublis for the upset in 3 sets.
