  • Baghdatis, Hewitt take the court in Indian Wells

    3/7/13 3:54 PM | Cheryl Murray
Baghdatis, Hewitt take the court in Indian Wells Marcos Baghdatis and tour veteran Lleyton Hewitt will be in first round action as the first day of the PNB Paribas Open in Indian Wells.

    Marcos Baghdatis vs. Daniel Brands

World No. 35 Marcos Baghdatis will take on German Daniel Brands for just the second time in his career. The Cypriot won their last encounter, a showdown on the hardcourts of Marseille back in 2010, in straight sets. Baghdatis has had mixed results in 2013. He started off the season with a semifinal in Brisbane and a third round showing at the Australian Open. He made the quarterfinals in Rotterdam, but lost in the first round in Dubai.

Brands is ranked 74 in the world. He's been in good form in the past month. The German was forced to qualify for the event in Dubai, but managed to make it to the quarterfinals, beating Mikhail Youzhny along the way. His ranking jumped 23 spots based on his good result.

Fatigue might be an issue for the German, but he'll have a shot at the upset.

    Lleyton Hewitt vs. Lukas Rosol

Aussie veteran Lleyton Hewitt will take on Lukas Rosol in his first match in Indian Wells. Rosol gained international attention when he defeated Rafael Nadal in the second round of Wimbledon last year. Since that big win, however, Rosol hasn't been particularly impressive. The Czech made the quarterfinals in Zagreb, but the rest of his season has been a series of first and second round losses.

Hewitt has actually had it worse. The Aussie, whose ranking has slipped to No. 98 in the world, has won just 4 matches this season.

The courts in Indian Wells are fairly slow and high-bouncing, conditions that don't favor the Aussie's game, but he'll still have chances to advance if Rosol doesn't serve well.
