• Dubai - Federer faces Berdych for finals berth

    3/1/13 1:23 AM | Kelli DeMario
Dubai - Federer faces Berdych for finals berth World No. 2 Roger Federer will attempt to book a spot in the championship final, as he takes the court against world No. 6 Tomas Berdych. The players are set to contest their 17th career meeting on Friday.

Defending champion Roger Federer has compiled an 11-5 series edge against third seed Tomas Berdych. The two last met at the 2012 US Open, where a quarterfinal clash went to the Czech in four sets.

Federer moved into the semifinal following his 6-2, 6-2 defeat of former world No. 3 Nikolay Davydenko. The 31-year-old Swiss converted four of 7 break points through 55 minutes of play.

“I haven't seen (Berdych) play much this year,” Federer said. “He's obviously a good player. He's got amazing power, one of the strongest guys out there on tour. We'll see tomorrow how it goes. I haven't seen him play at all here this tournament. I need to just focus on my game, I guess.”

Federer is seeking his 8th final at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships.

Berdych is through to the last four by virtue of his 6-3, 6-2 victory over Russian wildcard Dmitry Tursunov. The 27-year-old Czech tallied nine aces and three service breaks in 64 minutes of play.

Berdych is bidding for his second final in as many weeks, having made the same stage in Marseilles (lost to Tsonga).

    Prediction: Federer in three sets.

Error fest till now..errors galore from both sides in 1st 6 games

Fed serving 1st will have the advantage

sanju , 3/1/13 4:52 PM

Berdych so deserves to lose this match

sanju , 3/1/13 5:36 PM

Berdych saves two match points after the second set was literally stolen from him. Ah well, these things happen.

danica , 3/1/13 5:59 PM

Berdych actually won the 2nd set when he heard the ball called out and just hit it any old how only for the umpire to tell him that it was not called out by the line judge and it was too late for him to challenge it. The ball was actually out.

nadline , 3/1/13 6:02 PM

Justice is done. Berdych takes the 2nd set.

nadline , 3/1/13 6:04 PM

Yes Berdy won the 2nd and frankly he deserved to as he had already won it at 6-5 when Fed was servin. Thanks to a stupid person from the crowd and poor linesman call miss, he was denied. Well he was meant t0 save 3 MP and win 2nd in dramatic fashion

Fed must be pissed. I still think Fed will win it but the longer he stays on court, worse for him v/s Djoko

sanju , 3/1/13 6:05 PM

deserved set

RickyDimon , 3/1/13 6:05 PM

Yes, justice is done. Third set.

danica , 3/1/13 6:06 PM

What happened? I just caught the match midway in the breakeq.

abhirf , 3/1/13 6:08 PM

Berdy is Feds toughest match up outside the top 4 and after Berdy its Delpo

And now Berdy self destructs with hordes of errord opening

sanju , 3/1/13 6:09 PM

Abhi..Berdy ws denied the 2nd set due to a wron line call on setpoint and Fed blew 3 match points in the breaker

sanju , 3/1/13 6:10 PM

I think Fed will win in the end because Berdych makes too many unnecessary errors.

nadline , 3/1/13 6:11 PM

Sanju, yeah. I just tuned in when Fed was serving at 5-4 in the breaker. And watched him blew away all those 3 MP's.
Would also agree to your opinion that Berdy is Fed's toughest proposition outside top 4. He seems to be really confident of his game against Fed.

abhirf , 3/1/13 6:15 PM

I hope Fed wins bcoz then we will atleast have a match tomm as Djoko fears Fed to an extent.

Djoko will easily beat Berdy

Danica - What is issue with Novak in closing out happ twice this week where he couldn't serve out the set

sanju , 3/1/13 6:15 PM

^^ yup. Fed-Djoko would be much more competitive than Berdy-Djoko.
And here is break for Berdych!

abhirf , 3/1/13 6:19 PM

Vamos Toe-ma-shhhh-Berdych-at-Work

Conspirator , 3/1/13 6:19 PM

I'm not holding my breath that Berdy will hold all his serves to clinch the match.

nadline , 3/1/13 6:22 PM

^^ Mr. SHANKALOT at work.
BTW, Berdy serving really big now.

abhirf , 3/1/13 6:23 PM

RickyDimon , 3/1/13 6:24 PM

Another DF!! Wtf is up with you Roger!

abhirf , 3/1/13 6:25 PM

I am still aying Fed will win this match..Berdych will ift wrap it with

sanju , 3/1/13 6:31 PM

gift wrap *

sanju , 3/1/13 6:32 PM

BTW Fed is very animated today..hes a bit grumpy..

Not sure why

sanju , 3/1/13 6:33 PM

Berdy doesnt choke against Fed

abhirf , 3/1/13 6:35 PM

Both are rushing so much and producing so many UE, its like a joke

The match is being played at jet speed

sanju , 3/1/13 6:37 PM

Fed is grumpy because he is playing like an immature today :(

abhirf , 3/1/13 6:37 PM

^^^Oh yes he does! AO 2009, Berdy had a 2 sets to 0 lead and lost.

nadline , 3/1/13 6:37 PM

Time for Berdy to blow 3 MP like Fed.How can he be left

sanju , 3/1/13 6:38 PM

Cmon Fed break him, its not that I am rooting for you. I simply want to enjoy a Djoko-Fed final on Saturday night .

sanju , 3/1/13 6:40 PM

Nadline, things have changed a lot since AO 2009.

abhirf , 3/1/13 6:40 PM

Congrats Tomas. Sorry for Roger.

Conspirator , 3/1/13 6:43 PM

abhirf, Berdy is still flaky. He's got a good game but can't seem to hold his concentration for too long.

Berdy does it!!!!

nadline , 3/1/13 6:44 PM

Well Berdy what mental resilience to close out the match like that.

Fed will be totally pissed I am telling you, blowing 3 MP on such a fast court will piss him off no end.

Thats 2 of his titles from last year not defended..700 points lost. IW 1000 points comin up again, hard to win that too

sanju , 3/1/13 6:45 PM

If Muzz wins IW, he goes to No. 2.

Conspirator , 3/1/13 6:46 PM

If this is going to be Fed's level of play this year, then I would like him to stop playing. It's really painful to see him play so ugly.

abhirf , 3/1/13 6:55 PM

This is the year of Federer's decline, finally. No doubt about it.

Emiliano55 , 3/1/13 7:00 PM

^^ sad, but yeah it does look to be :(

abhirf , 3/1/13 7:06 PM

This is not good for Fed holding MPs and losing the match. USO same situation with djokovic and WTF, Fed had breaks in hand and gave them back. dunno if it's his impatience or lack of concentration that's causing him to lose so many matches he should win. I don't mind Fed losing to anyone, but if they beat him then make it count. Berdy is always more strong against Fed than he folds when playing Djokovic. Of late, Tomas and Tsonga have been drawn in Fed's side a lot. what's the story with these draws?.

scoretracker , 3/2/13 4:25 AM

i don't mind about these losses as long as he performs well in only hope for fedex is wimbledon otherthan that i don't have any expectations.

chenna21 , 3/2/13 4:37 AM

People, give Roger a break and credit to other players. When he loses break or match points, maybe it's not because he did something badly but because the opponent played great.

danica , 3/2/13 6:19 AM

Surely this is the year that Fed will struggle to win a single title more still even reach a final. Nature is simply taking its course, it's a full change of guard now which will be in full effect this year no doubt. Nole is by far the best now, lets face it. Fed should retire with dignity, this year a top 5 finish will be a great result. He is done, just like we have seen the Agassis, Sampras, Safin declining people thought Roger would be top tier forever but this is it. Lets see if Nole can chase the records. Great for tennis.

tennismania , 3/2/13 6:22 AM

I'll believe that Federer is done when he stops reaching the semifinals of slams. Until then, and especially at Wimbledon if he gets done a favour with the roof, he should stand a chance.
