  • Dubai - Federer, Davydenko highlight quarterfinal play

    2/28/13 3:34 AM | Kelli DeMario
Dubai - Federer, Davydenko highlight quarterfinal play Defending champion Roger Federer will attempt to reach the semifinal with a win over Russia's Nikolay Davydenko. The players are set to contest their 21st ATP World Tour meeting on Thursday.

World No. 2 Roger Federer has compiled an 18-2 series lead over former World No. 3 Nikolay Davydenko. The two last clashed at the 2013 Australian Open, where a second-round meeting went to the Swiss in straight sets.

Federer is through to the quarterfinal after beating Spain's Marcel Granollers in straight sets. The 31-year-old completed the 71-minute match without dropping serve, 6-3, 6-4. Federer is seeking his eighth semifinal berth at the tournament.

“I think I was sharper today,” said Federer. “I had a clearer plan. I knew what I could and couldn't do. So that automatically carves out sort of the things you might want to attempt. I was a bit more confident overall. I knew what I wanted to do and I was able to do it, so I'm happy.”

Davydenko advanced to the final eight with a 6-4, 7-6(2) victory over Romania's Victor Hanescu. The Russian will attempt to make his first semifinal since January, when he finished runner-up to France's Richard Gasquet in Doha.

“I'll never disrespect a guy like Nikolay,” Federer explained. “He's done too much in the game. That's why I know it's a dangerous round next match. I know what he can do on his absolute best day because I was one of the guys that got crushed by him as well during that time. I expect him to come out and play that way.”

    Prediction: Federer in straight sets.
