  • Ferrer and Wawrinka in round one action in Acapulco

    2/26/13 5:33 AM | Cheryl Murray
Ferrer and Wawrinka in round one action in Acapulco Defending champion David Ferrer and Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka will be in action on a bustling second day of play at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel.

David Ferrer (1) vs. Albert Ramos

Spaniard David Ferrer has an astounding 17-2 record on the season so far with two titles including one last week in Buenos Aires on South American clay. The world No. 5 has not lost before the semifinals yet and will look for another title this week.

He starts out with a sometimes tricky clay opponent, countryman Albert Ramos. The world No. 56 reached the quarterfinals last week in Buenos Aires and another quarter in Vina del Mar. Ramos is a competent clay-courter and not, perhaps, a great opponent to see in the first round of a tournament.

Under normal circumstances, fatigue would possibly be a factor after 19 matches in such a short period of time, but Ferrer is incredibly fit. This match should go Ferrer's way in straight sets.

Stanislas Wawrinka (4) vs. Fabio Fognini

This is a favorable match-up for Stanislas Wawrinka. The Swiss owns a 3-0 record over Italian Fabio Fognini, one of which came in Acapulco back in 2011. Fognini is known as a clay-courter, unfortunately for him, all 3 of Wawrinka's wins have come on the dirt.

Wawrinka comes into this week off a run to the finals of Buenos Aires, where he lost in 3 sets to David Ferrer. The world No. 17 is a good clay courter, as evidenced by his run last week.

Fognini had by far his best result of the year last week. He also lost to Ferrer in Buenos Aires, but he did so in the quarters in a lop-sided match.

Prediction - This should be another match in the victory column for Wawrinka. The Swiss in straight sets.
