• Simon, Benneteau in all-French encounter

    2/16/13 4:33 AM | Cheryl Murray
Simon, Benneteau in all-French encounter Gilles Simon will take on countryman Julien Benneteau on semifinal day at the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament.

The last time compatriots Gilles Simon and Julien Benneteau met, the result was a blistering five-set marathon at the 2012 Australian Open. Benneteau won that encounter, his first-ever win over Simon.

This meeting comes on the heels of the win of Benneteau's career, a thrilling straight-set victory over defending champion Roger Federer in the quarterfinals. The veteran Frenchman put on an outstanding display of indoor tennis to take advantage of Federer's poor form.

The win should give Benneteau confidence, though the world No. 39 will have to be careful of a possible letdown after the adrenaline rush of defeating the world No. 2.

Simon isn't a traditional indoor-court player. He plays a retrieving style that should contrast nicely with Benneteau's more aggressive game. The courts are likely to be an advantage to Benneteau, whose serve is more capable of doing damage.

    Prediction - Benneteau in 3.
