• Youzhny, Gulbis in Rotterdam action

    2/12/13 3:34 AM | Cheryl Murray
Youzhny, Gulbis in Rotterdam action Mikhail Youzhny and qualifier Ernests Gulbis will take the court in Rotterdam on Tuesday as the second day of first-round action kicks off.

Mikhail Youzhny vs. Thiemo DeBakker (WC)

Another Dutch wildcard will be looking for an upset win in Rotterdam. Thiemo DeBakker will hope to follow in the footsteps of countryman Igor Sijsling, who upset No. 3 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga on Monday. DeBakker will take on Russian Mikhail Youzhny, the world No. 30.

The two men met for the only other time two years ago on the same court in Rotterdam. Youzhny won that encounter in straight sets, but he was in better form back then than he is now.

DeBakker is a big hitter and if he's playing well, he could make life difficult for Youzhny. Still, the Russian should be solid enough to get past DeBakker and into the second round.

Ernests Gulbis (Q) vs. Robin Haase

Qualifier Ernests Gulbis, whose ranking has dropped to No. 132 in the world, will take on Robin Haase in his first ATP tournament match of the 2013 season.

Haase comes into Rotterdam off a good run in Zagreb, where he lost in the semifinals to Jurgen Melzer. The Dutchman is ranked 50 in the world with a 4-4 record this season.

Prediction - Gulbis has spent the start of his year languishing on the Challenger circuit. Haase should get through this in straight sets.

I hope you saw Gulbis in action today Cheryl. You predicted that Haase would win in straight sets. He actually managed just three games.

I wasn't at all surprised by what happened as I knew how well Gulbis played to qualify. For example, aces on second serves and a hat-tricks of aces against Kamke - just like the old days !

anyone who thought Gulbis would win a set today is seriously out of touch with reality

Gulbis was ON FIRE today, but it was wholly unexpected by anyone with a brain.

RickyDimon , 2/12/13 4:36 PM

Holy shit. Gulbis was simply in white hot form( a rare occurrence for him)

tj600 , 2/12/13 4:58 PM

At the moment, I think it unrealistic to "expect" Gulbis to win tour-level matches. Obviously he will do so from time to time, but to expect it? Not likely.

cherylmurray , 2/12/13 7:05 PM

Oh please, Cheryl's prediction was totally realistic given what we have seen from Gulbis recently. They say lightning can strike and apparently it did in this match. Sometimes Gulbis decides to actually play some tennis. But it's not something we will see on a regular basis.

I would have picked Haase to win this match over Gulbis. If he could put together back-to-back decent efforts, that would be a complete surprise to me.

Nativenewyorker , 2/12/13 9:02 PM

he's not beating Delpo

RickyDimon , 2/13/13 3:08 AM

As a believer in Delpo, I'd tend to agree but at his absolute best, Gulbis can beat just about anyone. What a wasted talent.

Conspirator , 2/13/13 3:15 AM

did anyone see the Gulbis interview?

RickyDimon , 2/13/13 5:19 AM

Yup. That was hilarious. He said he liked rotterdam because "marijuana is legal". LOL.

tj600 , 2/13/13 6:20 AM

the whole thing is really must-see. here it is. -

Classic! Thanks for the link!

What a clown. Still, only 24. Maybe he can grow up. Seriously? Smoking? LOL

He's fun to watch when he's on his game. Never count him out. Just ask Berdych.
