• Tomic and Simon in first round Rotterdam action

    2/11/13 4:10 AM | Cheryl Murray
Tomic and Simon in first round Rotterdam action Bernard Tomic and Gilles Simon will take the court on the first day of play at the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament.

Gilles Simon (5) vs. Daniel Brands

Frenchman Gilles Simon, ranked 14 in the world, had a standard start to his 2013 season. The No. 5 seed had a quarterfinal showing in Brisbane and he was knocked out of the Australian Open in the round of 16 by eventual finalist Andy Murray.

Daniel Brands is ranked 96 in the world, but he's been playing well enough this year that he should catch Simon's attention. The German successfully qualified for Doha and made it all the way to the semifinals before losing to eventual champion Richard Gasquet.

Simon is probably playing well enough to get past Brands, but the German may put up a bigger struggle than his ranking suggests.

    Prediction - Simon in 3.

    Bernard Tomic vs. Grigor Dimitrov

Young guns Bernard Tomic and Grigor Dimitrov are pretty evenly matched. Tomic, the latest Aussie hope, is ranked 44 in the world, but he already has a title this year, which he captured in Sydney. Tomic also made the third round at the Australian Open.

Dimitrov had a similar start to the year with a final showing in Brisbane, but he followed that with two first round exits in Sydney and Melbourne.

This will be the first meeting between the two men. The quick surface in Rotterdam should favor Dimitrov's bigger game, but the Bulgarian, who sits at No. 40 in the world, is unpredictable when he steps onto the court.

    Prediction - Tomic in 3.
