• Querrey waiting in the wings for Davis Cup finale

Querrey waiting in the wings for Davis Cup finale Sam Querrey will play bookend Davis Cup matches this weekend for the United States, if necessary. After beating Thomaz Bellucci on Friday, he could face a decisive rubber against Thiago Alves.

Sam Querrey and Thiago Alves will contest the decisive fifth rubber of the first-round Davis Cup tie between the United States and Brazil on Sunday if Thomaz Bellucci can kick off the day with an upset of John Isner.

Querrey is competing in his first career home tie and it got off to a good start on Friday. The 6'6'' American won the opening rubber by taking care of Thomaz Bellucci 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. He is now 5-2 for his 2013 campaign, which includes a third-round showing at the Australian Open (lost to Stanislas Wawrinka).

Alves turned in a commendable effort in his Friday rubber, in fact looking better than Bellucci. The 30-year-old made John Isner work but ultimately fell in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6(4), 6-3. Alves, who has won eight ATP-level matches and registers at No. 141 in the world, has contested two Davis Cup rubbers--the other against none other than Ivo Karlovic.

The underdog is going up against another big server on Sunday, albeit one whose serves are not quite as huge as Isner and Karlovic. Querrey has a big advantage on an indoor hard court, and he should prevail in straight sets even if doesn't have his best serving day.
