  • Ferrer faces Almagro in Australian Open quarter

    1/21/13 4:55 PM | Kelli DeMario
Ferrer faces Almagro in Australian Open quarter World No. 5 David Ferrer is back on court to take on world No. 11 Nicolas Almagro for a spot among the final four. The winner moves on to face either world No. 1 Novak Djokovic or Czech Tomas Berdych in the next round.

Fourth seed David Ferrer holds a comprehensive 12-0 series advantage over 10th seed Nicolas Almagro. The players last met at the 2012 Valencia Open, where a quarterfinal clash went to Ferrer in straight sets.

Ferrer is through to the quarterfinal after taking out 16th seed Kei Nishikori in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, 6-4. The 30-year-old Spaniard converted seven of 11 break points through two hours and 10 minutes of play.

"It is very difficult to win a Grand Slam because there are the Top 4. In this moment, the last three or four years, they are better than the other players," Ferrer explained. "But I am not thinking about if I have the chance to win a Grand Slam. I am only focused with every match I will play."

Ferrer is seeking his second semifinal berth at the Australian Open.

Almagro passed into the final eight following the retirement of 8th seed Janko Tipsarevic. The 10th seed had built a 6-2, 5-1 lead when the Serbian called it a day with a foot injury.

"It is a big opportunity for me to be in a semifinal. I'm ready to fight, said Almagro. "I'm healthy and I'm happy with my tennis. I think I'm playing really good. (Ferrer is) hitting the ball with a lot of confidence, and we'll see what happens on Tuesday."

    Prediction: Ferrer in straight sets.

I think Ferrer is still angry about Davis Cup so it might get ugly for Mugzy.

Absolutely loving this result, or at least the one its heading to. Serving for the match, don't choke!

Brilliant forehand down break point! No body position, rotation or great technique about it, simply talent and great hands.

samprallica , 1/22/13 6:01 AM

Alas! broken back.

samprallica , 1/22/13 6:03 AM

Almagro Choked served for it 3 times couldn't close it out and now they are heading into a 5th set. SURELY there is only 1 winner from here

THIS IS The END for Almagro he looks hurt, even at 100% there was no way he was going to with this 5th set after the disappointment of failing to serve it out 3 times.

Terrible loss this will be. 2 sets to love up can't get any worse.

samprallica , 1/22/13 6:55 AM

Lol, Amalgro snatches defeat from the jaws of victory, yet again.

deuce , 1/22/13 7:26 AM

oh Deuce. Too cruel. But very funny. I nearly spilt my tea over the computer laughing at that one from you. BTW: How are you managing in all the snow? it's lovely and sunny where I am in Southern Spain - tee hee!

ed251137 , 1/22/13 8:04 AM

Oh ed., lovely to see you here again and explains your absence.
But you, you rotter you! How could you mention the sun when it's so horrible here? Snow has turned to ice and whole bloody country came to a standstill at the weekend, as usual :(

deuce , 1/22/13 8:32 AM

Wow, didn't see the match but see the score. Didn't expect it to be that tough for ferrer.
Ed - welcome back in time for the fireworks finale:-) Ah, sunshine ...
