Ferrer battles Baghdatis in third round Fourth seed David Ferrer looks to make the round of 16 at the Australian Open with a victory over former finalist Marcos Baghdatis. The players are set to contest their fifth career meeting on Friday.

World No. 5 David Ferrer holds a 3-1 series advantage over former world No. 8 Marcos Baghdatis. The two last met at the 2010 Masters 1000 Madrid, where a second-round match went to the Spaniard in three sets.

Ferrer is through to the round of 32 by virtue of his four-set victory over lucky loser Tim Smyczek. The 30-year-old veteran converted seven of 21 break points en route to a 6-0, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.

The fourth seed, in line to win his 10th match of the season, is seeking his sixth berth in the Australian Open round of 16.

Baghdatis made the third round after dismissing Japan's Tatsuma Ito in four sets, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2. The 2006 Australian Open finalist (lost to Federer) looks to reach his first round of 16 since 2009.

    Prediction: Ferrer in four sets.
