Tomic, Raonic in Australian Open action Up-and-comers Bernard Tomic and Milos Raonic will contest their second-round Melbourne matches on Thursday. They are set for respective meetings with Daniel Brands and Lukas Rosol.

    (Q) Daniel Brands vs. Bernard Tomic

Tomic will resume his Australian Open campaign during second-round action on Thursday after easing past Leonardo Mayer 6-3, 6-2, 6-3 in his opener. The dominance on Tuesday night only continued the 20-year-old Aussie's scorching early-season form. Tomic, back up to No. 43 in the world, beat Novak Djokovic at the Hopman Cup then captured his first career ATP title in Sydney.

Up next for Tomic is Brands, who is arguably playing the best tennis of his career. The 6'5'' German won a Challenger event in early November and he has not looked back this season. Brands qualified for Doha and made it to the semifinals, and he also qualified last week before ousting No. 27 seed Martin Klizan in four sets. This will not be a walk in the park for Tomic, but the home hope should advance in four.

    (13) Milos Raonic vs. Lukas Rosol

Raonic and Rosol will also be going head-to-head for the first time in their careers on Thursday. Rosol earned his first Grand Slam match victory since upsetting Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon when he took care of qualifier Jamie Baker 7-6(5), 7-5, 6-2 in round one. The 6'5'' Czech, who started slow in Doha and Auckland, registers 10 spots off his career-high ranking at No. 75 in the world.

Similarly, Raonic underwhelmed in Brisbane--dropping his opener to eventual runner-up Grigor Dimitrov in straight sets. The 15th-ranked Canadian got off to an inauspicious start in Melbourne by losing the first set to Jan Hajek on Tuesday, but he eventually prevailed in four. This could be competitive if Rosol serves extremely well and Raonic's deliveries are off the mark, but this should not require more than four sets for the No. 13 seed.
