  • Djokovic battles American Harrison in Australian Open second round

    1/15/13 5:34 PM | Cheryl Murray
Djokovic battles American Harrison in Australian Open second round The draw gods were not kind to American Ryan Harrison, who will face down defending champion Novak Djokovic as the second round gets underway in Melbourne.

Defending champion Novak Djokovic is not a good match-up for Ryan Harrison. The American world No. 62 already lost to Djokovic in straight sets at Wimbledon last year and in Cincinnati the year before.

Djokovic, who plays aggressive off the baseline, is most often merciless with players like Harrison who have a tendency to drift too far behind the baseline. The American is often caught playing defensive tennis and does not hit the hard, flat strokes that could make a dent in the groundstrokes of the world No. 1.

Anything other than a straight-set victory for Djokovic would be a surprise. The Serb's pace of shot and excellent returning should see him through to the third round easily.

Harrison is playing abominably badly against djokovic. If this is the future of american tennis, there is none.

Djokovic's serve looks quite impressive.

Not only supposed to be the future of American tennis but the future of tennis!!!

nadline , 1/16/13 11:52 AM

I dont understand why these guys aren't told that trying to hit the ball as hard as they can at djokovic will never work and plays in to djokovic s brilliant counter punching ability. They need to vary the pace, create some angles and exploit djokovics weak slice with some low balls. Im not saying beating djokovic is easy, far from it, however a more tactical approach will take him out of his comfort zone and rhythm.

willmw101 , 1/16/13 11:57 AM

^^^ Easier said than done. How many could play that way? Hard hitters may have a chance on the quick hard courts or on grass, not this AO court.

Nole looks fresh and not as thin as when he's in 2011. He's playing very well at the moment, lets see how Stepanek plays him in the next round; hopefully more interesting than this one.

Lol Nole "battles". Nole gives young yank, "Master Class" more like.
Agree with willmw though, you have to use your head against Nole to have any chance. Not sure Harrison has got enough magic in his box of tricks to do so.

deuce , 1/16/13 12:44 PM

Willmw - so how come you're not out there playing then? Sorry, couldn't resist.

alex , 1/16/13 2:33 PM

Did anybody notice any difference in Nole's shots? I'm curious to see if the new racquet has made any difference.

nemanja230690 , 1/16/13 3:10 PM

Looks like Djokovic is on a roll...or did Harrison play so poorly?

netcord , 1/16/13 3:21 PM

Willma...." hit the ball as hard as they can " WOW...
What a great idea! I am sure that no one EVER had a such magnificent thought !
You got to call uncle Tony... he will pay a great deal of money for such illuminating opinion!
....
Nice, easy day in office for Nole :)

zare , 1/16/13 5:20 PM

Zare this is what I wrote:

"trying to hit the ball as hard as they can at djokovic will never work"

You obviously cannot understand english so dont attempt to contribute. You are literally the dumbest poster on tennis talk, congratulations.

willmw101 , 1/16/13 7:15 PM

Harrison does like to hit the ball hard, harder and hardest. That certainly isn't going to work against Djokovic and it won't work against the other top players. Harrison needs to figure out when to unleash the power and also to have other tactics.

Nothing was going to help him against Djokovic, but this kid has talent and needs some discipline and a tennis brain to go with it.

Nativenewyorker , 1/16/13 8:24 PM

Lol willma, it's so difficult for you to witness Nole's victories :)
C'mon man, you can do it better. Pure, poor hater and liar... one day Serbian... one day speaking Chinese... Portuguese... and it goes on and on...

zare , 1/16/13 10:25 PM

"Willmw - so how come you're not out there playing then? Sorry, couldn't resist."

:chukle: at least he would make an excellent coach.

rfzr , 1/16/13 11:10 PM

super solid performance.

vamosrafa , 1/16/13 11:38 PM

Young Harrison was clearly overwhelmed by the occasion. He could do better. He has great serve and hits flat, strong and fast. However, he needs to be a bit more agile and a lot quicker. Some work on tactics will do him good too. We shouldn't be too hard on him just because he is inexperienced. He'll learn. This match was a great learning opportunity.

danica , 1/17/13 12:50 AM

^^^^

I am in complete agreement with you. I hope that my comments did not come off too harsh on Harrison. It's just that I thought he would have progressed further by this time. I would like this youngster to find himself and realize his potential. Of course, taking on Djoko at the AO in a second round match was always going to be a losing proposition. But sometimes it's the way you lose. There are things you can take from matches, especially against the #1 player who has won this event three times. I hope that Harrison can take something away from this match.

Nativenewyorker , 1/17/13 5:39 AM

The standout feature of Djokovic's play was his serve.. It seems more or less like his serve from when he won the title two years ago, smooth and snappy. It seems like the 25s rule has worked in his favour - he displayed similar speed between points at the WTF last year and his serve looks really. Of course we are yet to see him in testing conditions though.

samprallica , 1/17/13 6:50 AM

Zare i wasn't even remotely "hating" on djokovic. You need to get a life rather than trolling me on tennis talk. And for the sake of everyone on tennis talk, learn to speak english, you posts are incredibly boring and incomprehensible.

willmw101 , 1/17/13 1:43 PM

Yaaaaaawnnn! Look who's talking about booooring :)
And for sake of humanity... Go somewhere and die slowly...
Almost feeling sad for you... almost.

"Go somewhere and die slowly"

zare, 1/17/13 1:54 PM

This is what I'm talking about... That is so agressive and hateful. Whats wrong with your life that you write things like that. I genuinely do feel sad for you.

willmw101 , 1/17/13 2:24 PM

My poor deeply troubled "friend"... What's wrong with your life?
Every post here... I mean EVERY post is pure hate for Nole.
"Why don't they play against Novak like this... blah, blah..."
"Why Novak has so easy draw'"
"Why are the letting Novak of the hook like that?"
"Why are they gifting Novak with victory?"
Novak is disrespectful ...on and on.... whining and ranting... That is you contribution on TT.
Simply sick person... LOL!

zare , 1/17/13 7:23 PM

Zare, your the one who wishes I was dead. That is so messed up. I feel so so sorry for your awful little sad life. I'm glad that you can at least 'LOL" about something though.... If trolling me gives you some degree of happiness then please carry on.

willmw101 , 1/17/13 10:56 PM

Sorry mate...I have just wanted for you to earn something in your life...DARWIN PRIZE!. You can google it...
Just continue trolling... never answer something... go on my Serbian friend with fluent Chinese ... pathetic :)

zare , 1/18/13 8:30 AM
