  • Berdych and Verdasco in second round action

    1/15/13 5:53 PM | Cheryl Murray
Berdych and Verdasco in second round action No. 5 seed Tomas Berdych and Spaniard Fernando Verdasco will take the court on Wednesday, looking for spots in the third round.

Tomas Berdych (5) vs. Guillaume Rufin

At the end of 2012, Frenchman Guillaume Rufin finally broke into the top 100; he currently sits at No. 92 in the world. The Frenchman's first round match this week was his first ATP win of the year. His improved ranking is largely thanks to his success on the Challenger circuit.

Tomas Berdych is now a perennial member of the top 10. The No. 5 seed is still looking for his first Grand Slam title, but he was a finalist at the 2010 Wimbledon Championships.

Rufin is working his way up the ranks, but he isn't likely to have enough fire power to handle a player of Berdych's caliber. The Czech in straight sets.

Fernando Verdasco (22) vs. Xavier Malisse

Fernando Verdasco had a lengthy 5-set match against Belgian Xavier Malisse at Wimbledon in 2012, which he finally lost 6-4 in the fifth. Malisse is ranked 55 in the world, well below Verdasco's position at No. 24. But the Belgian is a tricky opponent. Malisse owns a big first serve and a mercurial nature that can lend itself to brilliance or disaster. He had a quarterfinal showing in Auckland coming into Melbourne.

Verdasco had a tough 5-set match against Malisse's countryman David Goffin in the first round. The Spaniard fought his way back from 2 sets to 1 down to take the win, but his level wasn't particularly impressive.

Prediction - This could be another good chance for Malisse to snag a win from Verdasco.
