• Dimitrov, Tomic in action at Apia International

Dimitrov, Tomic in action at Apia International Grigor Dimitrov and Bernard Tomic will contest their Sydney openers on Tuesday. They are set for respective meetings with Fabio Fognini and Marinko Matosevic.

    Grigor Dimitrov vs. Fabio Fognini

Dimitrov will be looking to build on a week that delivered his first career ATP final when he takes the court on Tuesday at the Apia International. The 21-year-old Bulgarian played scorching tennis en route to the Brisbane title match before falling to top-seeded Andy Murray. For his efforts, Dimitrov is up to a career-high ranking of No. 41 in the world.

Up first for Dimitrov in Sydney is Fognini, whom he has never faced. The 47th-ranked Italian, who was solid but unspectacular in 2012, is looking to bounce back from a first-round Doha loss to Grega Zemlja. This match could go either way, because Dimitrov's recovery--and level of motivation in between Brisbane and Melbourne--is a question mark. Still, look for the favorite to survive in three sets.

    Bernard Tomic vs. Marinko Matosevic

It will be an all-Australian affair when Tomic and Matosevic square off for the first time in their careers at the ATP level on Tuesday. They have, however, faced each other five times in Challengers and Futures. Tomic leads the head-to-head series 3-2 and has won three in a row--most recently on the grass courts of Nottingham in 2011.

While 2012 was a relative disappointment amidst lofty expectations for Tomic, Matosevic enjoyed a breakout campaign. In fact, the 27-year-old registers 15 spots ahead of his opponent at No. 49 in the world. Matosevic opened last week in Brisbane with a first-round loss to Kei Nishikori. Tomic played the Hopman Cup exhibition and even scored a win over Novak Djokovic. Count on the 20-year-old getting the job done, but it may require three sets.
