  • Monfils continues Doha campaign against Brands

    1/3/13 5:13 AM | Ricky Dimon
Monfils continues Doha campaign against Brands Putting to rest serious injury concerns, Gael Monfils already has two wins under his belt this week in Doha. Standing in his way of the semifinals on Thursday is Daniel Brands.

Gael Monfils and Daniel Brands will be going head-to-head for the first time in their careers when they kick off quarterfinal action at the Qatar ExxonMobil Open on Thursday afternoon.

It has already been a hugely productive week for Monfils, who came into 2013 with questions surrounding the health of his knees. The 77th-ranked Frenchman opened with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over little-known wild card Mousa Shanan Zayed before making a real statement in the form of a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 ousting of world No. 20 Philipp Kohlschreiber.

Brands is also off to an outstanding start to his year. The 6'5'' German, who registers at No. 153 in the world, won only five ATP-level matches in 2012 and reached just one quarterfinal. Two wins already in 2013 (over Jeremy Chardy and Mohamed Safwat) have him back in the last eight of a 250-point event.

If Brands can serve extremely well and keep points short, an upset is possible. On the other hand, if Monfils is 100 percent as he assured after taking out Kohlschreiber, this should result in a triumph for the former world No. 7 after two competitive sets.

Brands took the first set 6-1. Suddenly players are coming out of the shades to make their presence felt.

Who is Brands, anyway?

It's to be expected that LaMonf will not go very deep for about 3-5 tournies upon his return, but he'll eventually begin to get the feel of his feet and then start going deeper, I hope.
